For just a second, he looked at the redhead walking in the direction of the great hall. Suddenly he realised he didn’t even know her name. This was such a weird day. In a way, he felt connected to her on a deeper level. After all that had happened, they shared a bond. He felt responsible for her and at the same time depended on her to keep him safe. They had cheated death, side by side. He couldn’t help but wonder if he would ever feel the same after he had gone on a raid. It was kind of the same situation, his people fighting for their own glory and to keep themselves but also each other alive. It was intense, but it sure gave him a feeling of euphoria. Freyr then focused on the task ahead. He decided to look at the training fields first, but the Hersir was not inspecting his troops at the moment. Someone pointed out that he might be at his house, planning a group training that would take place later that afternoon.

The warrior had been right, and he found the man at his house indeed. Freyr quickly explained the situation, after which he shared his thoughts on sending out a patrol. He didn’t even think twice about the difference in their ranks. A normal Herra would never even dare to suggest the Hersir on what to do. But then again, he was the son of the Earl. One day he would be the one calling shots like this, so this was good practice. The Hersir agreed and the both of them went back to the training fields. The man assembled a squad of four warriors, three of them vikings and one shield maiden. To his surprise, Yrsa was one of them. He greeted her with a warm smile. ”I’m glad you’re going with us”, He said to her. He knew all of them were fierce warriors, but he felt even more safe knowing that she would be watching his back. After that, he walked over to the shed where they kept spare weapons. They were mostly meant for training, but sharp and well maintained nonetheless. He figured a spear would be a good weapon to defend himself against a lynx. Attacking it from a slight distance seemed a bit safer than rush forward. After he was done, he went outside again, spear in hand. Now they would just have to wait for Gyda to join them, and they would be ready to go.

Despite spending the entire morning and early afternoon training already, Yrsa was always happy to fight someone new. So while she’d planned to go home and take her pair of pups out to the woods for a walk once she’d finished tossing the thegn she was sparring with into the ground, when another thegn stepped up for his turn next, Yrsa couldn’t say no. She helped up the first young man with a grin, wiped her dusty hands on her trousers, and turned to the newcomer. However, the Hersir arrived, looking for a few people to help chase off an animal that had attacked someone. Naturally, Yrsa was happy to volunteer.

She noticed people grabbing weapons and quickly realized they may not have actually meant to drive it off, but to kill it and her stomach sank. Few animals attacked without a reason and while Yrsa didn’t want to just assume whoever the lynx had attacked had deserved to be attacked, she could confidently assume the lynx was either starving, injured or scared. Or some combination of the three.

But when she discovered Freyr was one of the people who’d been attacked, her empathy for the lynx was overshadowed by her affection for the Herra. She knew he liked animals, maybe not quite as much as she did, but she was confident he wouldn’t just go around attacking animals needlessly. She strapped her swords to her back and her axe to her hip and joined the rest of the group.

Nodding at Freyr when he spotted her, she returned his smile with one of her own, and was only a little surprised when he told her he was glad she was joining them. “Whatever you need,” she told him, and genuinely meant it. She was more than happy to have his back whenever it was needed.

As she hadn’t been given an overwhelming amount of information, Yrsa decided to ask some questions. “Do we have a plan or are we just heading towards where it was last spotted?” Turning to Freyr, she added, “Did you notice if it was bleeding, or limping, or injured in any way?” Not because she was still planning to rescue it, but if it had just been frightened, it had probably run off and may not be a problem for them anymore. And if it was injured, the least they could do was quickly put the poor thing out of it’s misery, so it was no longer in pain, and no longer posed a threat to anyone else.

The task she had been given by the boy wasn’t the easiest one. Nonetheless, Gyda was determined to show her devotion to her village. She was doing this to keep the people in Skagerrak safe and what better way to show how much she was focused on her mission than to talk directly with the countess?

Her first destination was the great hall. Of course she would’ve started her researches there, since the countess spent lot of time there. Luckily for her, she didn’t have to look around too much and simply found Gunnvor on her throne, talking to someone she couldn’t recognise. Probably a thrall or maybe a villager. The redhead arrived few seconds before the woman ended the conversation she was having and the girl she was talking to turned around and exited the room. Gyda’s heart was galloping in her chest when she politely asked her if she could have a word with her. Somehow she managed to explain everything to her, briefly telling her the experience she and her partner had in the woods. That the boy that was with her suggested they sent out a patrol to make sure that animal wasn’t a threat to anyone in the village. The conversation pretty much ended like that, and after being dismissed, Gyda went straight to the training fields.

While walking towards her destination, her thoughts went to the boy who she just talked about to the countess. She didn’t know his name nor she had seen his face before, but she felt like they shared one of the most important experiences of their whole life. At least that was one of those experiences to Gyda, who never went hunting before that day and found herself in a deadly danger. She found difficult to trust people, but her instinct and the whole situation back in the woods, simply brought her to the point where she either trusted him or died.

She arrived at the training fields just when a small group was gathering weapons. She couldn’t recognise many people, apart from the boy and the shield maiden whose cute puppies that once showered her with mud belonged to. She got close to the two of them that were already having a conversation. She heard the shield maiden ask about the conditions of the animal they ran from and she cleared her throat just when she was close enough to the boy’s back. ”The countess is warned.” She simply announced to him, before moving her gaze towards the woman and smile at her, greeting her with a brief and fakely shy movement of her head.

Even now, when he was out of the danger zone and he could think more clearly, he had no logical explanation for the lynx being so close to the village. Normally the wild animals avoided crowded places like the farms or the village. He tried to recap the encounter, but he had been too busy running away to know exactly what had happened. It was hard to admit, but he had been scared and it had clouded his brain too much. Luckily the Hersir still believed him, and agreed to taking some more experienced warriors out to the woods to see if the lynx was still around. Yrsa was one of those warriors, and he made a comment to her about how happy he was she would be joining them. “Whatever you need,” She replied, and he could feel like she really meant it. “Do we have a plan or are we just heading towards where it was last spotted?” She asked the Hersir, after which she turned to him. “Did you notice if it was bleeding, or limping, or injured in any way?” She asked. ”I don’t think it was injured, but my guess would be it was an older animal. We were out hunting, and after we caught our prey, it jumped out of the bushes. I think it didn’t chase us because it stopped to eat our prey”, He replied. That could be valuable information. Now the beast was fed, maybe it had just walked off into the forest again.

Freyr turned around when he heard someone clear their throat. It was the Frú again. ”The countess is warned.” She said, and he nodded. ”Thank you. Did she say anything about the matter?” He asked her. Probably nothing too special, as the redhead didn’t tell them they should stay inside. So the Hersir demanded her to weapon up as well. The boy checked his own sword, which was still strapped to his side. With his sword and the spear, he would be safe enough. At least, that was what he hoped. After the Frú returned, the group left the training fields. ”Make sure your pups don’t follow you now”, He said to Yrsa, with a half smile. The little balls of fluff would stand no chance to the larger predator, and he didn’t want them to get hurt.

Despite hearing the whole story from Freyr, Yrsa still wasn’t incredibly enthused at the idea of killing the animal, but she understood the worry in people’s eyes. They couldn’t have a wild animal roaming so near the village where it could do any amount of damage to people or livestock. She nodded at Freyr after he explained what had happened. She thought his logic was sound. It sounded like the lynx was either just starving or too old to hunt its own prey successfully, if it had given up a chase in favor of their prey.

Yrsa raised an eyebrow when Gyda joined them. She wasn’t overly fond of the frú but only because she didn’t seem very friendly. Yrsa simply couldn’t understand the redhead, and typically chose to give her a wide berth. “Gyda,” she greeted with a nod after she’d told the group Gunnvor had been warned. “Was it the pair of you who came across the lynx?” She hadn’t realized they were friends. But to be fair, she didn’t really pay attention to that sort of thing.

She grinned at Freyr when he told her to make sure the pups weren’t following her. “Well they wanted to come see you, but they’re a bit better behaved than the last time you saw them.” And the last time Gyda had seen them, when they’d splashed mud all over her dress. Yrsa still felt badly about that. It certainly hadn’t made the frú like her any better.

After you, Freyr,” Yrsa added, knowing that while he wasn’t exactly in charge at the moment, he at least knew which direction they ought to head in. She was eager to get this over and done with. She secretly hoped they wouldn’t be able to find the animal, but knew she’d be able to handle killing it if they did come across it again. The safety of the village had to be more important than a single animal. Even if it did break her heart.

When the girl first woke up that morning, the only certainty she had, was that she had to go hunting for the first time. She didn’t know with whom, and she most certainly didn’t know that it was going to end with two young and not well trained warriors running away from a wild animal hiding in the woods so close to the village.

Even if the two of them were both beginners, her hunting’s partner quickly thought about warning the countess and gathered a small unit of warriors to help them solve the problem. It looked like he already knew how to behave in these kind of situations, while Gyda only knew she was scared and tired after running that much. She was impressed by the boy’s skills but she would never admit that, not to him nor to herself. Luckily, the meeting with the countess was distracting enough to rip away those thoughts from the girl’s head and making her focus even harder on her task.

The girl got to the spot where she and the guy who she spent that busy morning with were supposed to meet, just to find them all already equipped and ready to explore the forest and find a solution to their problem. She simply went straight to the boy, telling him she successfully warned the countess and chose that, this time, she definitely had to bring with her more arrows. Maybe something with which she could replace her now lost axe would’ve been good to. ”Gyda” Yrsa was next to the boy and nodded at her. “Was it the pair of you who came across the lynx?” She asked and the redhead nodded again in agreement. ”We were hunting together.” She simply said with a neutral voice. ”Did she say anything about the matter?” The boy asked after thanking her. Gyda shook her head in response and grabbed one of the last swords that were left as the Hersir was telling her to weapon up, she also took few arrows and put them in her own quiver. Now she felt safe. Not only because of the weapons, but also because she was surrounded with very skilled warriors. This was her real chance to stay back, watch and learn from them.

While she was getting ready, she heard them talking about Yrsa’s puppies. Gyda remembered them pretty well, since after meeting them for the first time, she literally had to throw away one of her dresses. But she couldn’t get mad, couldn’t she? They were puppies after all. ”Are they doing well?” She was fake and venomous sometimes, most of the time, but not heartless. She joined them once again after putting her sword on her belt and her quiver on her shoulders, still holding her bow in one hand. ”After you, Freyr” The woman then said, talking to the boy. Finally Gyda had the chance to know his name, after a whole morning of calling him “that boy” in her head. ”Wait, Freyr? Where did I already heard that name?” She asked to herself while following him one step behind. He couldn’t be that Freyr, couldn’t he?

“Gyda,” Yrsa said, greeting the redhead with her name. Apparently she knew who the young frú was. It was a name he would try to remember for sure. “Was it the pair of you who came across the lynx?” She then asked. It was his hunting companion who told they were out in the woods on a hunt together. He nodded, then asked the redhead if his mother had said anything else. Which she had not, she probably trusted his opinion on this and her hersir to handle the issue. They were all weaponed up, but he hoped they wouldn’t need them. If the lynx had just devoured their prey and left, it would be better for everyone involved, including the predator itself. He would be reluctant to kill it, so it had better run off into the forest again. Away from the village. Because if it showed its face again, they would only send out another patrol. He loved animals, and respected their life. But if they threatened the safety of his village, he knew he would have no choice. The lives of his people were more important.

But he could protect the little pups he had met the other day. “Well they wanted to come see you, but they’re a bit better behaved than the last time you saw them.” Yrsa said. He smiled warmly. ”Good, I’m glad the training is coming along”, He commented. Gyda asked about the pups as well, after which Yrsa told him to lead the way. ”Alright, this way”, He said, pointing at the exit of the village. The group started following him, weapons in hand, even though they would have to walk for a while before arriving at the spot. But they had to be prepared.

Eventually he started recognising the forest, and he could hear the river again as well. Freyr waved at the hersir, who made the group stop. ”We could check if the lynx ate from our prey. Maybe it left a trail as well”, He said on a soft tone. The hersir nodded and he pointed in the direction of the river. ”Over there”, He continued. The boy now followed the other man, but kept his eyes open for any movement in between the trees. He also checked upon the other group members, but especially on Yrsa and Gyda, making sure they were still safe as well.

Yrsa glanced back and forth between Freyr & Gyda as they gave her bits and pieces of information. They’d been hunting together, apparently, when they’d come across the lynx. It was probably a very good thing they’d managed to catch something on their hunt, or one of them could have been hurt. Though, they were both fighters; They might’ve been able to handle it on their own. What did she know? She nodded in reply when Gyda had answered her question, not actually having anything further to say on the matter.

She grinned at Freyr though, when he talked about her pups. And turned the grin towards Gyda with another nod when she asked if they were doing well. “They are, thank you. I’m still sorry about your dress, by the way,” she added, sending the younger woman an apologetic look.

When the herra took the lead, Yrsa followed immediately. She assumed it would be a bit of a trek until they came across anything particularly important, but she had her axe in her hand anyway. It never hurt to be prepared, and wandering into the forest to hunt down a potentially dangerous animal was not the sort of situation in which she wanted to risk being caught off guard.

She spent a good deal of time in these woods, often preferring to keep her own company when she wasn’t busy training, and was sure to keep her eyes and ears open, on the lookout for anything out of place, or any threatening noises. Freyr’s idea, to locate the animal they’d taken down, and see if the lynx had gotten to it, and possibly left a trail, sounded like the best plan they had, and she nodded in agreement. Of course, her opinions on the matter weren’t really necessary, but that had never stopped her from sharing them before.

After walking for a while longer, Yrsa could smell blood in the air, and assumed they were getting close. If the lynx hadn’t gotten to whatever the pair had managed to kill, another animal certainly had. “Can you smell that?” she asked, wanting to make sure they continued in the correct direction. She tightened her grip on her axe. There was always a chance the lynx hadn’t wandered off, and they didn’t want to stumble upon it unprepared, assuming it had already fled.

Weapons in their hands and they were talking about pups. Gyda found that pretty ironic and couldn’t help a little grin to show up on her face. The shield maiden then apologised for what her puppies did to her dress and the redhead simply shook her head and shrugged her shoulders. ”Don’t worry, it’s fine. I didn’t like that dress anyway.” She said with a neutral tone, before looking at Freyr when he started moving towards the forest.

They spent the whole morning walking back and forth from the forest so she knew they were about to walk for quite a while before reaching the point where they encounter with the lynx happened. Gyda felt like she could recognise every plant they were passing by, as if she exactly knew how the woods were made by now, but she knew it wasn’t like that. She know for sure the shock she went through and the attention she paid to every single thing that was surrounding them when they ran from that animal. It was like she somehow unconsciously scanned through every tree and plant to make sure not to pass by the same place ever again. Yet here she was, going in the exact direction where she came from just few hours before, with her heart pounding in her chest. It felt like it was the first time she was feeling her heartbeat after her father’s death and that feeling was just unpleasant.

The boy kept on guiding the whole group towards the place where they spotted and killed what was supposed to be their prey and Gyda’s mind could only flash the memories of what seemed to be happened years before. The river sounded like it was singing out loud, right in the girl’s ears and she felt over sensitive to every sound or movement she was hearing or seeing. A woman’s voice broke into Gyda’s thoughts and she needed a moment before actually grasping the meaning of the sounds she heard. ”Smell what?” She said, inhaling deeply and reflexively holding onto her weapon a lot tighter than before. The redhead recognised the smell only because she smelled it just that morning. She didn’t know that blood could have such a recognisable smell, but after all that happened, she was sure of it. ”Is it blood?” She said in a whisper, more to herself than to the group that was following them. Her surroundings suddenly became a battlefield, one that she kept on scanning with her sharp eyes.

In moments like this, he looked a lit like his father. He himself had no idea about that though. But if he was watching him right now, he would sure be proud. Freyr was developing himself like an earl, as it was his destiny to one day lead his people like his father before him. His birthright, the throne, would one day be his. Right now he was practising, getting more experience. But it felt all really natural. Of course he had the privilege of being the earl’s son. Ever since his father had killed the previous earl, people had to listen to him too. Even if he was just a Herra. But he had grown accustomed to it. He didn’t take it for granted, but in moments like this no one would question his authority. There was too much at stake. They were risking their lives out here, but it was all for the sake of the safety of the villagers.

When they were closing in on the spot where they had killed their prey, he warned the group. Everyone seemed to tense up a bit more, paying closer attention to the surroundings. “Can you smell that?” Yrsa suddenly asked, and some of the men grunted in agreement. Freyr breathed in deeply through his nose, and the scents of the forest flooded his senses. It was only when Gyda mentioned blood, that he made the connection in his brain. He looked at her and saw how nervous she looked. He tried to smile reassuring, but he felt his muscles tense up as well. ”We’re really close now”, He said softly.

The boy pushed himself through the brush, and there it was; the deer they had killed earlier that day. But it was almost unrecognisable. It was torn apart and blood had soaked the soil. There was no sing of the predator though. He pointed with the tip of his spear in the direction of where it had come. ”I think the lynx came from that way, and we ran in the opposite direction. It followed us for a while, that way”, He described, now pointing at the other side of the open spot. ”Should we split up or stick together?” He asked, not sure if the latter was a smart idea. He knew how to read tracks, but there were too many crossing each other here, so they would have to find other tracks some place else to make sure that it now was moving away from the village.
