Thora was feeling so off-balance after her conversation with Bjorn behind the pillar. She hated feeling vulnerable, hated feeling so powerless. She knew that eventually this would make her stronger, but right now all she feels is weak. She feels so raw, so open to every little thing: every stormy glance from Bjorn's deep blue eyes, the memory of his callused hands against her cheek and his lips firm against her forehead. She's confused, and hurting, her past dredged up and leaving her feeling so confused. She's quick to grab another horn of ale, draining it in long gulps, her hand resting against the table to steady herself, because she feels almost like she's going to fall over at any moment. She knows it's a stupid thing to do, that the ale isn't going to help her, but she just needs something, anything, to distract her from the storm rising in her blood. She's scanning the tables for her brother Audun. Really, this is all his fault. He convinced her to come to the feast, and then pushed her into the line of dancers. If she'd just stayed sitting at the table, none of this would have happened.

She's desperate for a friendly face, feels like she's a leaf drifting in a rough wind--sinking, sinking, and soon she'll drown in all that she's feeling. Audun is nowhere to be seen, the back of his head indistinguishable from the backs of countless other heads. She curses him softly, her hands clenching into fists in her skirts, and pours herself another horn of ale with shaking hands. Thora hopes her gut isn't wrong, that whatever happened between her and Bjorn behind that pillar, whatever understanding they've finally seemed to reach, is going to make her stronger in the long run. Because in this moment, all she feels is weak and raw and terribly alone.

She takes a deep breath, forcing herself to breathe more slowly as she scans the crowds again. There has to be someone here she knows, some distraction she can lose herself in.

Don't fear death if it comes, embrace it as if you lying down next to a beautifull woman. Don't look back to what you had but look forward to what you can achieve, in that way the Gods can gift you with beauty that even a woman doesn't have.
There were quite some moments in which he had fun but a feast like this, they didn’t come around all of the time and it was different. Ubbe had his time, with the guest, his brothers, even Ivar behaved for once in his life. And the ale, the good looking woman you didn’t saw around every day. He sat in the back, laughing on something that Hvitserk said before both they eyes went to the same girl again. She smiled all that shy and innocent and those two brothers were eying her like a hawk before dinnertime. ‘No, you take her. Enough left.’ Ubbe reacted when Hvitserk drank his full cup empty in one fast movement and give it aside to his brother. Ubbe looked how he stroke his arm over his mouth before he walked over to her. Ubbe shook his head, seeing how she reacted and that devilish charm Hvitserk always kept around.

He took himself another cup of ale, feeling light headed in the moment when his eyes fell on something far more than an innocent shy girl, Thora. He squeezed his eyes a little, noticing not that fierce woman he played with a couple of days ago, who give him a certain protection and the promise to fight alongside of him. She seemed shaken up by something, the way she breathed in. But for that Ubbe had a little to much to drink so he pushed up, locking his sight on her as she scanned the crowd for something. He approached her from behind, eyes greedy on her body like the ale was greedy on him. When he stood beside her he pushed his head closer to her, pressing his lips to her ear. ‘You seem offlay lonely to be so beautiful and fierce.’ He smiled, looking over her shoulder to whatever there could be staring at. ‘What are you looking for?’ He asked, chuckling over his next words. ‘Because you can just turn around if you are looking for a handsome face.’ He challenged her. By the gods the ale, Ubbe looked down in his cup, knowing that he should stop but instead lifted it to drink more. You live only once, it’s his duty to live it as fully as possible.

Thora is in the process of draining her second horn of ale, even though she knows she's drinking too much too fast, and it will only cause trouble. She's still looking for someone, anyone, when she feels eyes devouring her from behind. She ignores them, thinking it's probably just another drunk Viking come to try his luck with her. She's hoping he'll just leave her alone; she's not in the mood for drunken hands grabbing at her, not again. She keeps looking for her brother, still silently cursing him in her head for the mess she's in now. Blaming him is easier than blaming herself, at least now when she's feeling so vulnerable. She'll reconsider in the morning, through what she's sure is going to be a raging hangover, but she doesn't care. She's almost forgotten about the eyes on her, she's so intent on being angry at her brother.

But then there's a body behind her, so close she can feel the warmth radiating from him. She's about to jam her elbow into his gut when hot breath tickles her ear and a familiar voice is speaking to her. You look offlay lonely to be so beautiful and fierce. The relief is so strong she can almost laugh from it--Ubbe. Maybe the gods heard her prayer after all, sent her a friendly face to soothe the confusing storm roiling through her. The ale certainly wasn't helping, but Ubbe... In this moment, she thinks she's never been happier to see a person than she is to see Ubbe. He's kind and playful, and simply his presence is enough to make her feel calmer. She resists the almost overwhelming urge to lean her back against his chest, to sink into the warmth of him and forget everything else for a little while. "I'm not lonely anymore, am I?" She asks, raising her eyebrows even though she hasn't turned to face him yet.

What are you looking for? She was opening her mouth to answer him when she hears Ubbe's deep chuckle, and she knows they're about to begin another round of their game. Excitement rises in her as he speaks. Yes, this is exactly what she was hoping for. Because you can just turn around if you're looking for a handsome face. She giggles, a little breathless, and finally turns to face him. She's surprised by how close he is, but she doesn't step back. The ale in her blood is urging her on, and she reaches up one hand to draw a finger down the length of his nose. Her tone is light and challenging when she answers. "You have a high opinion of your own good looks." She grins at him, but her bright eyes are soft as she continues. "Although I can't disagree with you." She pulls her hand away and lets it fall back to her side as she looks up at him again. It strikes her again how close he is, and she fights the urge to step closer. She's still feeling unbalanced after her talk with Bjorn, and Ubbe is steady and solid even when they're taunting each other. He makes her feel safe, and she so desperately wants to feel safe right now.

"What did I do to earn the pleasure of your company, Ubbe?" She's smiling slightly, her tone a little bit mocking as she looks up at him, into his deep blue eyes. Yes, she already feels safer, calmer, in Ubbe's comforting presence and in their familiar, easy banter.

Don't fear death if it comes, embrace it as if you lying down next to a beautifull woman. Don't look back to what you had but look forward to what you can achieve, in that way the Gods can gift you with beauty that even a woman doesn't have.
This night could get as worse or as good as he wanted, in this case it became better because ... it was Thora. Their first talk, their fight, it all was fresh lingering in his head and he couldn't resist on bringing a smile on his lips when he looked at her and remember. But it didn't go the other way around, whatever went through her head ... it wasn't anything amusing and in a way he wanted to be concern but on the other hand the ale worked against him. Besides, couldn't he just bright her evening a little? She must notice his gazing, right, but she was way to occupied with something else. Ubbe tried to find what she was looking at or searching for but even that went all that well in his head, so he just walked over, surprised her with his presents so closely behind her.

When he softly started to speak in her ear something of a relief rushed through her body, he could her shoulders almost see dropping for more than a few inches. He frowned his eyebrows, studying the side of her face he had a clear look up. She didn't stepped back from him, she didn't turned around and that were just the kind of encouragements Ubbe hardly needed to enjoy the fact that he was so close by. He kept his eyes on the side of her face when she stated that she wasn't all that lonely anymore. 'No.' He whispered. 'But you seem tensed, something I can do about it?' He tilted his head, his chin contacting in a short moment with her collarbone before he speaks further, challenging her, taunting her, flirting with her. That was the only steady thing between the two of them, bantering their ways into each others lives. And he enjoyed it, he enjoyed looking at her, fighting with her while all on this moment he could think of was catching her.

When she turned around his eyes traveled down to her lips that produced that little giggling and made his smile even bigger. She drawn her finger over his nose and he pulled it up, keeping one hand around his cup while his other was eager on touching her to. When she started to talk he cocked his head to the side, taking her words in before he softly chuckled, yes ... he had a high opinion about himself when he had a little to much to drink. 'Are you complaining? Because I can walk away.' He pointed over his shoulder, nodding in the second set of words. 'I knew you would agree.' He smiled amused, bringing his cup up and drinking the very last of his ale while she asked him why she deserved his company. 'Thora,' he stated, lifting his hand, fingers softly wrapping underneath her chin, fingertips following her jawline while he looked into her eyes. 'Maybe it's me who was looking to earn something an it was you the gods give.' His fingers slided away over her throat before he pulled back. 'When I see a friend alone it is my duty to keep them company and you of all people Thora,' he felt silent, shaking his head while he studied her face. 'shouldn't be alone.' He followed with that sweet little drunk edged smile of his.

Ubbe's voice is like a rope that she grabs to keep herself from drowning. The sound of his voice in her ear, his breath tickling against her cheek, and his warmth behind her bring her back to herself, back to this moment. Maybe in the morning she'll blame the ale, but Thora is finally ready to let the wolf catch her. Their friendship is easy and teasing, a careful hunting game of taunting and chasing. Tonight, she's ready to fall prey to Ubbe. She remembers the feel of his bottom lip between her teeth in the woods, the groan she drew from him when she sucked his lip roughly into her mouth. She remembers the way his large, warm hands gripped her wrist, and the way his body felt against hers. She blames the ale for the quickening of her pulse, but she doesn't want to think too much about it. There's only this moment, only now, with Ubbe behind her ready to spring.

She rubs her cheek lightly against Ubbe's as his chin rests on her collarbone for a moment, his beard tickling her. "You're already helping." Her voice is light and playful, ready to taunt him, to lose herself in their game, in his bright eyes and smiling mouth. She thinks again of his lip between her teeth, and grins. She's ready for him to catch her. She turns around, watches the way his eyes dip to her lips as she giggles. Thora can practically see the thoughts behind his eyes, running so similar to her own. It's something of a dangerous game they're playing, but they're both just drunk enough that the danger doesn't matter. All that matters is the thrill of the chase, and the satisfaction of a successful hunt. She runs her finger lightly over his nose, happy that he doesn't pull back, that he seems to enjoy her touch, even. "The day I start complaining about you, Ubbe, I've lost my mind." She laughs, shaking her head. She knows his leaving is an empty threat, he seems determined to catch her. Besides, Ubbe is her friend, they promised each other so. She knows he won't walk away from her, just like she won't walk away from him.

Thora leans into his touch, her eyes closing for a moment as his gentle fingers trace her jawline. She likes the way her name sounds coming from his lips, and she lifts her bright green eyes to meet his blue ones. "What are you looking to earn tonight?" The question is a challenge, just like almost everything is between them. She can guess what his answer will be, but she wants to hear him say it. Wants him to admit he's looking to continue their game, maybe even take it one step further. She saw the way he watched her in the woods, but he wasn't the only one doing the watching. Maybe he's young, maybe he's untested, but he moves with the lethal grace of a predator. He lives up to his namesake, and Thora knows someday men will fear him. But she doesn't feel fear, waiting for him to pounce, only a breathless sort of uncertainty. She wants reassurance, but isn't willing to admit her weakness.

She's still as his fingers trail down over her throat, a small smile playing over her mouth as she looks up at him. His hand drops away and he speaks. She tilts her head to listen, and the ale urges her to take a step closer to him. She obeys, and when she answers her voice is light and teasing. She loves this, the taunting of him, the way they dance between serious and joking so easily--as if the line between them didn't exist at all. "That's all I am to you, Ubbe? Duty?" She pouts up at him, reaching up to sharply tug his long braid. Her eyes narrow in mock anger, but she can't keep the smile from her face as she continues. "If all I am to you is duty, go fulfill your duties to other people." She pulls once more on his braid before letting go, but she doesn't step back.

Don't fear death if it comes, embrace it as if you lying down next to a beautifull woman. Don't look back to what you had but look forward to what you can achieve, in that way the Gods can gift you with beauty that even a woman doesn't have.
It all started with her. She was there on his hunt, she scared away his pray. And for that he needed to swift his hunt from one delicious good looking innocent dear to one more beautiful but not so innocent young woman. And he never complained about the deer, hunting her was so far more fun for him, hunting her was far more exciting than a deer he could brag over with his brothers. That and that taunting little smile on her lips just did it all for him. And tonight they could continue that game. He wasn’t sure if she would show up, but the fact he saw her long blond hair, he could whisper into her ear, drag up what they left behind on the hunting cabin … he was glad that she did. He was ready for the final round, at least, if she was willing. Probably the ale would help them both a little further, it sure made Ubbe more flirty.

He felt her cheek scouring over his as she spoke. A tickling feeling spread through the area and made him smile slowly. ‘Good.’ He said. He wanted to help, he would always help, it was in his nature and they agreed on that at the hunting cabin. He would be her friend, he would help her as she would do the same. One day they maybe would stand there, alongside each other in the front lines of a Viking raiding group. It would be another kind of trill but he was pretty sure he would love it all the same, fighting alongside of her. Although this was all very playful and enjoyable, Thora and Ubbe connected on at least that level. Looking down to those lips remembered him about their little fight, the way she used his weaknesses to distract him, the way her body felt on and under his. It was all so much worth repeating and it was a memory lingering on the surface of his mind. Her words made him chuckle a little. He closed his head a little to hers; looking her deep in the eyes. ‘I hope you never lose your mind then.’ He winked, all playfully again.

Touching her, his fingers dragged so slowly over her jawline that he could see her leaning into it, closing her eyes even. He absorbed that sight as he enjoyed on feeling her skin underneath his hand. She wanted this, she couldn’t hide that, just as he couldn’t hide it for wanting her. With the question his eyes shifted away from his fingers back to her green once. She knew what he wanted, the ale made it more obvious. A grin crocked up his lips as studied her face. His fingers stroke over her throat, a flat hand around it before it left her again. ‘You.’ He didn’t held it back. Or at least the ale made him spit it out. But being direct was as good a game as another. If she didn’t wanted that the hunt would extend, one way or another, he would get her, if it wasn’t tonight it would be tomorrow or the day after that. ‘Do you want something?’ He asked with a slightly tilted head and a equally challenging voice.

His words were a little misplaced, not quite good pronounced so he wasn’t surprised if she got into it. His eyes drifted to the little distant between them and he badly wanted to make it even smaller than she did. ‘No.’ He reacted, cursing himself to even state it as duty. His head kicked back as she pulled his braid and the gentle look in his eyes shifted to a more dominant on as she went on. His hand sneaked around her waist while his body turned her with his around, pushing her against a pillar of the great hall. He lost his cup somewhere in between to a slave so with the one free hand he had he grabbed her chin, not that gentle under the little eager dominance in his face but softly weakening as he felt his body almost lean into hers. ‘I don’t want to be somewhere else.’ He said, petting a finger against her chin, spreading his warm breath over her face. ‘I want to be here, with you, catching you.’ With that last his playful smile came back up. No, they never stopped hunting each other.

The two cups of ale she drained just before Ubbe found her are starting to catch up with her, a tingling warmth spreading through her body and the noise of the feast fading to background chatter. And Ubbe is here, standing so close to her she can barely think straight. All she can think of is the feel of his muscular body beneath hers when she pinned him, and the weight of him holding her down when he pinned her. Their game is dangerous, so dangerous, but Thora has always loved danger. If she was smart, she would leave. Just walk out of the great hall, and leave her brother to find his own way to her house after the feast. But maybe Thora isn't as smart as she thinks, or at least the ale makes her dumb. She's feeling reckless, and off-balance after her talk with Bjorn, after dredging up the past that she tries so hard to forget. Thora hates feeling so vulnerable. With Ubbe, she feels strong again. Feels more like herself. It's a feeling that's more intoxicating than even the ale. She couldn't walk away from him right now, even if she wanted to.

She rolls her eyes as he speaks, although she can't help but laugh at her wink. "I don't think anybody ever plans to lose their mind." She pauses, smirking up at him, taunting, challenging as always. "Just like you didn't plan on losing to me in the woods." She knows those are dangerous words, but she's trying to taunt him. She loves teasing him, and she wants to see how he's going to react to that statement--if he's going to tease her back, or jokingly try to make her pay. She's eager to see what path he chooses, how their game is going to play out tonight. She knows the stakes are higher now, the reward greater--but so is the danger. She's not afraid, though. She wants to play this game until the end, although she hopes at the same time that it never ends.

She knows it's obvious how much his touch affects her when she leans into his hand tracing her jawline. When she looks up at him, she can see how much he wants to touch her, too. She isn't sure whether she should thank the ale or curse it, so instead she just focuses on the feel of Ubbe's gentle fingers. That's easier than thinking about anything else, than feeling anything else. And Ubbe, he's kind and playful. He's one man that she will allow to touch her, one that she can let her guard down around. She asks him what he's looking to earn tonight, although she already knows the answer. It's obvious in the way his hands explore her face, but still she makes him say it. She wants to be sure of the direction their game is moving in. Usually she doesn't care, just lets the game go in any direction it takes them, but tonight Thora needs certainty. She was feeling so vulnerable when Ubbe found her, and although she feels better with him, there's still part of her that feels powerless.

A small smile tilts up the corners of her lips when he answers, saying he's looking to earn her. Then he's throwing the question back at her, giving her control, allowing her the chance to turn back from their game. Because even drunk Ubbe would never do anything she didn't want him to do. She reaches up one hand to trail it through his beard, her smile growing as she meets his bright blue eyes. "You. But you already knew that, didn't you?" She knows she isn't good at hiding her emotions under the best circumstances, but especially not when she's drunk. Suddenly she's looking up at him, her green eyes wide and serious, and she bites her lip before she speaks again. "But if it's going to make it so we can't be friends, I'm not going to let you catch me tonight."

She grins again when he says that she isn't duty, that he wants to be here with her. Hunting her. She tugs his braid, watching the expression change in his eyes from playful to dominant. She tugs again, liking this shift in him, and grins. His hand is suddenly wrapping around her waist, her back pressing into a pillar, and Ubbe is so close to her she can feel the heat of him. His hand is under her chin, rougher than before, more eager, forcing her to look up at him. He's so close she can feel his breath on her face, smelling like ale, and she can't stop herself from wondering what his mouth would taste like on hers. Thora rests one hand on Ubbe's back, between his shoulder blades, stroking in a small circle. "Good." Her voice is barely above a whisper, and she smiles up at him. "Because I want you to be here, trying to catch me. If I let you." Her grin is wild, like she's daring him to try and catch her. Her hand is still rubbing slow circles between his shoulders, and her other hand rests against the arm that's around her waist.

Don't fear death if it comes, embrace it as if you lying down next to a beautifull woman. Don't look back to what you had but look forward to what you can achieve, in that way the Gods can gift you with beauty that even a woman doesn't have.
After their encountering in the woods Ubbe knew he had unfinished business with Thora. He not only wanted to see her again, he also wanted to settle the scores. He lost, she won and like the man he was he needed to stretch that even. Tonight, he didn’t knew if it was a good night to see her again, the ale would make him do stupid and yet stupid was what he maybe was after. But just as he felt encouraged to be around her she didn’t moved away or stopped his words, so … was it really stupid then?

When she talked about losing minds his thought went to his father for a moment, even under the slight drunk layers Ubbe couldn’t resist on thinking about him. About how Ragnar lost a little of his sanity, his mind. But that thought faded as he looked down in those striking green eyes of Thora. When she talked about him losing in the woods he threw his head a little back, laughing as he watched the ceiling. ‘Already digging that up Thora.’ He started before looking back at you. ‘Can I remember you I had you pinned down underneath me a little before you defeated me,’ he felt silent, squeezing his eyes together before he went further. ‘I know you remember, I surly remembered.’ He said, licking his lip where she so boldly had grabbed it. But she won, yes she did and how he had to freely commit to that defeat. ‘You can’t win always Thora,’ he spoke her name slowly before tilting his head a little, challenging her into more games in the future.

He wanted her and with the ale in his stomach it became a need. Seeing her here so closely before him made his eyes shine a little in approval. He hardly looked away from her, the blue fighting the green in their own battle of dominance. He wasn’t shy to say it out loud, that he wanted her and she wasn’t shy on her way to say that she wanted him. ‘Hmmm,’ he did like he was thinking about it. Did he knew that? ‘I recognize a woman in desperate need of good company when I see it.’ He was teasing her, bragging a little, letting the ale take course of the situation they were in. When her eyes grew more serious his did to. In a way he was sensitive to her emotions, just as he noticed her troubled look in the beginning he saw her serious look now. And despite he wanted her madly, he was still her friend. When she spoke his face relaxed and a lazy smile crawled back on his face. ‘I would never endanger the friendship, not even when we are drunk and fools.’ He promised her, stroking his finger softly under her chin. ‘For that you are way to valuable.’ He followed, leveling his eyes with hers. ‘You believe me?’ He asked, looking her straight in the eyes so she could just get lost in his and forgot whatever they were talking about. He meant it but he was eager on catching her to.

As serious it was seconds ago, how fast in changed now. Ubbe grew more dominant, certain, feeling her body move with his until she leaned against that pillar. His body is hardly inches away from hers, fingers feeling her skin as his hands wrapped around her chin before he calmed down in a less dominant state. Feeling the small circles between his shoulder blades didn’t really help him. When she applied on his words his smile grew a little. Her last set of words made him squeeze softly in the side of her body. ‘Here you stand,’ he whispered, moving his head closer. ‘pinned down between me and a pillar,’ he tilted his head, the tip of his nose softly stroking her cheek. ‘nowhere to go.’ He finished, moving his lips to her ear. ‘If that isn’t caught I need to try other things to seduce you.’ He whispered, smiling as he moved his head a little back to look her back in the eyes. He followed his fingers over her throat again, wrapping them around her neck as he contacted a little of his body weight with hers. ‘What about now, you feel caught already?’ He teased her, looking down to her lips. By the gods, did he wanted to taste her …

Thora considers that maybe she's in the mood to be caught, because she suspected from the instant she heard Ubbe's voice behind her that this was the direction their game is going. He's given her plenty of chances to escape, and she's taken none of them. She thinks that maybe this is inevitable, that they've been hurtling toward an ale-soaked encounter since they first met. They've always been hunting each other, taunting and teasing and bantering. It's an easy friendship, one she doesn't want to endanger, but tonight Thora is in a dangerous mood. Ubbe is steady, he's comforting, and she cares about him. She's grateful he somehow managed to find her just when she most needed someone, and rather than question that, she's just going to be thankful for it.

She grins as he throws his head back laughing, and she loves the carefree, happy sound of it. "Of course I'm bringing it up, somebody needs to put you in your place." She teases, then looks up at him as he lowers his gaze to hers and speaks again, reminding her that he had her pinned. She didn't need to be reminded, she remembers it very clearly. She watches as he licks his lip, the exact spot where she'd bitten it. She's shocked to find that she wants to lick that spot herself, to lose herself in the taste of him.  She licks her lips without realizing it before shaking herself out of those thoughts to answer him. "I remember. And I remember the way your lip felt between my teeth." She winks, then shakes her head at Ubbe's next words, a playful smile on her lips. "You're right. I guess I'll have to let you win sometimes." She winks.

She's grateful for the way her and Ubbe go between playful and serious so easily, without missing a step. They just seem able to understand each other well, it's an important thing for friends and for companions in the shield wall. She relaxes as he promises he would never endanger their friendship, his fingers gently stroking her chin. She meets his bright blue eyes and sees the honesty there, and things are getting a bit too serious for her. She dips her head down to gently bite on the finger tracing her chin, grinning as she looks up at him again. "I believe you, Ubbe." And with that simple statement, everything became playful and easy again.

Thora settles her back against the pillar, Ubbe's hands harder, more demanding, against her skin. His head is close to hers now, so close and coming even closer. He's whispering as his face lowers down to hers. He strokes the tip of his nose against her cheek and she shivers slightly, closing her eyes, focusing on the feel of him, the sound of his whisper. His lips are at her ear then, his breath tickling her. Then he's moving back to look in her eyes again, and she meets his smile with one of her own. "This is working just fine," she assures him in a whisper. She stops rubbing the small circles between his shoulder blades and rubs her hand slowly down his broad back, around his side, and up to his chest. Her hand stops on his shoulder as his fingers close around her neck as he begins to lean some of his weight against her. He teases her again, looking down at her lips as he asks if she's feeling caught already. Her hand slides firmly down his arm, pausing at his wrist, and her thumb slowly strokes the back of his hand. She smirks up at him, tightening her grip on his wrist a little. "I think I could escape if I really wanted to." She's teasing him back, smirking, and moves her head closer to his, until the tips of their noses are touching. "But you were right earlier, I have to let you win sometimes." She tilts her head, their noses sliding past each other, moving until their lips are barely a breath apart. Her tongue darts out and she licks his lip quickly, giggling, before pressing her nose back to his. Her bright green eyes meet his blue ones and she whispers, "Maybe I want to feel caught tonight."

Don't fear death if it comes, embrace it as if you lying down next to a beautifull woman. Don't look back to what you had but look forward to what you can achieve, in that way the Gods can gift you with beauty that even a woman doesn't have.
Bringing up the fight they had … it couldn’t go any different way than this. Reminding each other of the losses and wins they had, the feelings, the glares. Ubbe had met a lot of woman but Thora was one of those he wouldn’t soon forget. Aside that it was just more the a flirt, between all there bantering in they made the connection to friendship, between all there teasing in there was place for more serious things. It was easy to feel her need, her words, her expressions, just as he had seen she was distracted, a little off earlier. Which he tried to get away by pulling her right back in the game they played.

‘I need to be put in place, who is gonna put you in place?’ He asked her with that wide smile. She couldn’t always win, he would fight her to the point he was the one claiming the victory. He looked down to her, the way she was repeating his exact move by licking her own lips. How long by the gods did he get to hold this level on without devouring her entirely. What that was what his head was heading, not in another fight, not in another game, in claiming where he was longing for since his eyes crushed down on her earlier. Her words pulled him back out of the thoughts by looking at her lips. ‘Hmmm,’ he kicked his head a little sideways, grinning. But he couldn’t bring himself on answering those words while he was thinking about the feeling. She made it hard for him to be not distracted, she could win easily if he wanted … he wasn’t in the right mind but she neither. When she stated that she should let him win sometimes he chuckled. ‘I’m gonna win, if you let me or not, that’s a promise.’ He said in almost honorable. He would fight, play, challenge her until he won something.

If it was one thing he wanted her to know that was whatever happened he would still be her friend before something else. Ubbe wasn’t an awkward person, he could find his way with everybody, everywhere so Thora wouldn’t be any different. He would be there for her, protect her if it was needed despite she was pretty capable on protecting herself. But that was what a shield wall did, together strong. So when she said she believed him he looked her a long second in the eyes, nodding before everything got challenging again.

The ale got them both fired up, for that Ubbe didn’t held back on words or the way his body and hands moved. He turned her right against a pillar, locking her in a position where she probably didn’t wanted to escape out. He was talking to her in a tone that was both challenging, seducing, teasing with his nose over her skin. He felt her shiver and he smiled over it, feeling the need on getting her to shiver all over again. When she said it was just fine he looked back, bumping his nose shortly against her. ‘Thought so.’ He stated. Her hand started to move, that slowly pace over his back, side, up to his chest. Ubbe couldn’t ignore it, taking a deep breath as he held his eyes locked with hers. His question made her answer, feeling her fingers around his wrist he looked down to it for a second. ‘But you don’t want to escape.’ He just said, almost hundred percent sure he was right for once. Their noses touch and Ubbe kept gazing into her eyes, with the words until he feels her tongue over his lip, the soft giggle that made his smile a little intense. Really, the sounds of this harvest festival disappeared in his longing for her. His hand traveled around her neck, hearing the last of her words his eyes traveled down to her lips before he tilted his head a little. Not answering any of her words he placed his lips on her, like a predator catching his prey after a long hunt. He wasn’t all that gentle, lips moving against the once he so badly wanted after that one fight. His other hand traveled to her cheek, flattening against the side, stroking it over to her hair where he entangled it. He pulled back in a moment, resting his forehead against her and opening his eyes to hers. ‘You really didn’t gave me another choose Thora.’ He whispered, dragging his thumb over her lip, how could he resist such a person in the first place?

PostSubject: Re: this is a problem we can't run away from [Ubbe/Bjorn] this is a problem we can't run away from [Ubbe/Bjorn] EmptyWed Oct 04, 2017 5:33 pm

Thora can't deny that sometimes she's remembered the feel of Ubbe's lip between her teeth, the warmth of his body against hers when they sparred in the woods when they first met. But more important than that to her is their game: their teasing and banter, the easiness of their friendship. She likes Ubbe, and she doesn't want to jeopardize their friendship, but right now she's feeling so raw and vulnerable, left so open from her talk with Bjorn. She wants a distraction, doesn't want to think or feel anything unpleasant; and Ubbe is certainly pleasant. Had she been sober, she might not have let him catch her so easily. In the morning, maybe she'll blame this on ale and weakness, or maybe she won't. Thora isn't sure, but this feast is supposed to be fun. It isn't supposed to make her remember things she doesn't want to, isn't supposed to open her up to feelings she doesn't want to face. But it does, and in the morning she'll probably groan and curse herself through a pounding head and confused thoughts. Those are problems for tomorrow.

Because right now, Ubbe is here and she feels safe and light-hearted, playing the familiar game with him. Even if there is an edge of something more dangerous to their playing tonight, she chooses to ignore it. Thora will deal with those problems in the morning, when her head is clear from ale and Ubbe isn't filling her entire vision with his bright blue eyes and smiling mouth, so close she can feel the heat coming off him. His presence is entirely too good of a distraction. The pillar is solid and reassuring against her back, Ubbe is soothing--or at least distracting her from--everything that Bjorn left feeling so expose and raw. She can't help but roll her eyes when he replies, a little smug, thought so and pokes a finger lightly into the center of his chest. "Arrogant," she snorts, smiling.

And then his fingers are at her throat and he's someone she'll never flinch from, even when he could so easily harm her if he wished, even when he has her in such a vulnerable position. For all their easy banter and friendship, for all their teasing and games, she trusts him. She remembers how he sensed her unease when they first met in the woods, how he took care to show her he was no threat and to put her at ease. He's a good man. Her hand trails from his back to his shoulder, his side, his chest. Down his arms, slowly, exploring, taking her time. She pauses at his wrist, watches his eyes flick to her hand as she strokes her thumb slowly along the back of his hand. She only shakes her head in response to his statement. No, she doesn't want to escape. Not from him, not right now. She pressed their noses together before darting forward to lick his lip, the same spot he'd licked just a little earlier, the same one she'd bitten in the woods. Her giggle is a little breathless, and she watches his smile grow wider.

She knows his mouth is coming to hers but still the first contact shocks her. His lips aren't gentle against hers, rough and demanding, conquering. And in the nature of their game, Thora cannot meekly let him take whatever he pleases. She rises to the challenge of his lips, her own just as rough against his. She feels his callused palm against her cheek, loses herself in the feel of his fingers tangling in her hair, and tightens her grip on his wrist. He breaks the kiss and rests his forehead against hers, his blue eyes meeting her green ones, and he whispers to her again. She isn't quite sure how to answer him, it seemed like a serious statement. To buy herself a little time, she presses a quick kiss to the thumb tracing her lip. Her eyes meet his again and she whispers back, "Don't blame me, blame the ale. You always had a choice." And yet, strangely, she feels like neither of them really had much of a choice, not with the way this night kept spinning off in unpredictable directions.

He had been standing by that one, same pillar for quite a while. The music was pealing through the room, just as the shouting and laughing from the feasting crows. Multiple servants had passed him by and offered him more cups of ale, since he was quickly emptying the ones he got his hands on. Maybe he should have denied a few  of those offers, maybe he should have looked for Hvitserk or Sigurd and joined them. But that was not what he had wanted. The thing he wanted the most was not within his reach. Or not in a healthy way. Thora had left him with an empty feeling in his stomach, even though it was quite full of the ale. Just as his blood was full with the alcohol from it. It started to take over his body: His tongue became heavy, his balance was not that good anymore, his emotions were strengthened. The grieve, the missing, the wanting, it all increased until it took completely over his thoughts. Björn grabbed the pillar with one hand, trying to find his balance as he stared towards the floor. He needed to get some fresh air and empty his bladder, so slowly and in a wavering way he started to look for his way through the crowd.

He could see all the faces from the people. Some were staring at him, some not so much. Björn stared back, seeing the faces immediately, but only realizing who it was some seconds after. ”Are you allright, Ironside?” A woman asked him, and he could only smile broadly. Words did not found his tongue. He placed his hand on her shoulder, looking for some support when he walked past by her. And then he stumbled across another pillar, he grabbed it in the carving of the wood and kept himself standing. When he started to walk beside it, he almost bumped into two people. He pinched his eyes and tried to focus. At first he saw, then came the realization.

”Don’t blame me, blame the ale. You always had a choice.” He saw how Thora was being pressed in between Ubbe and the pillar that Björn was still holding from the side. Words popped up in his head, but he couldn’t speak them out loud. His anger, on the other hand, was very ready to speak. He just lost his mind in the moment, stepped aside from the pillar and grabbed Ubbe by the back of his neck. Suddenly he had no problem anymore with keeping his balance. Björn’s fingers slid behind the collar from his tunic, and he pulled him back with an incredible force, tearing him loose from Thora. A monstrous growl came out of his throat as he released his brother’s clothes. But he gave Ubbe no time to get steady on his feet again. Björn walked straight towards him, reaching out for the axe that was hanging on his side. ”Ubbe.” He sputtered and pulled the weapon from his sheath. How was his own brother able to do this to him? And then he realised he didn't wanted to know. He just wanted him to pay for what he had done. For the crack in his heart that was only tearing further.

Don't fear death if it comes, embrace it as if you lying down next to a beautifull woman. Don't look back to what you had but look forward to what you can achieve, in that way the Gods can gift you with beauty that even a woman doesn't have.
He was hunting her already for a while, ever since she scared away his deer in the forest he locked his mind on her. Boys will be boys after all, Ubbe was no different. But in between all of that their friendship took a stronghold in the bantering, something he would protect. But this feeling, the feeling of ale burning in his blood and the innocence lurking from in her green vivid eyes didn’t even give him a change. He was eager on touching her and she was eager on letting him so what held them apart, nothing. Ubbe had already kissed some women but every single kiss was different, made him feel different. He breathed in through his nose, feeling the sweet pressure taste from her lips while he lost himself in the moment. Not being careful but fully kissing her on the lips, like he actually just jumped on top of his pray. Feeling her skin underneath his fingertips, her hair slipping through his hand as her fingers clenched closer around his wrist. Moments like this should take longer but breath was of the essence and he had to break that passionate moment of desire, ale and Thora.

Meeting her green eyes his touched softened a little against her neck and in her hair. Looking down how she pressed a kiss against his thumb that was tracing her lips. He hummed on her words, looking back up to her. ‘Would you have choose differently?’ He asked her, tilting up the corner of his lips to grant her a smile. But before he even could say or do anything else he felt a grip tighten around his collar. The force in which the was throw loose from Thora was incredible, Ubbe needed all his power to keep standing while his head cleared away all the ale to focus on the problem …. His big brother. It took him three whole seconds to get the situation in order, to connect Thora and Björn together and put Porunn in the middle of that. Björn marched his way towards him, pulling out his axe while his name came offlay violent over Björn’s lips. ‘Brother.’ Ubbe warned him, walking back, trying to measure the situation.

The great hall became for a part silence in a very fast time, Ubbe didn’t had the weapons and with his brother before him he wished he had. His eyes went to Thora, figuring out that her distracted mind of earlier probably was Björn his fault to begin with. So he took the measure into own hands, knowing he was starting a war into Björn heart by digging up the past. ‘Is this what is it about?’ He began, nodding his head towards Thora, he hated it that Björn stood in between in, although Thora would know her way around defending herself, yet, he kind of promised her to be at her side and here she was, in the middle of all of it. ‘What did I do wrong? Tell me.’ He followed. The ale maybe made his mouth a little bigger to talk, challenging his brother to get over his own feelings. ‘Thora has nothing to do with the past. Does she even know brother?’ He titled his head, looking at his brother with slightly squeezed eyes. He had known Porunn, he had known Siggy, but Ubbe had no part or fault in all of that and he wasn’t planning on letting Thora go just because Björn his heart still was broken from something that happened years ago.

Thora feels safe, feels calm, pressed between Ubbe and the pillar. His lips had been rough and sweet against hers, the ale in her blood howling only for more, but even moments like that can't last forever. Ubbe's smiling, asking if she would rather have him choose differently. But before she can even answer, he's gone. Ripped away from her, and immediately she sees the reason. Bjorn, growling like the beast he's named for, his face like a storm, promising only death. Guilt threatens to drown her--this is her fault. She should have called him back, grabbed his hand and asked him to stay with her. Weak, she's so weak. She always lets Bjorn walk away from her, and maybe this time she should have stopped him. Should have known it would only cause trouble, for them to both be alone and feeling so torn. The force he used to toss Ubbe away from her is incredible, it's impressive he's even still on his feet.

Ubbe's walking backward, talking, even when his brother's face is promising blood he tries to be reasonable, to ask him what all this is about. Thora has eyes only for the gleaming ax, for Bjorn's white-knuckled grip on its handle. Her green eyes sweep over Ubbe quickly and find him unarmed. Unarmed, with Bjorn's looking like all he wants is to spill Ubbe's blood. Ubbe the patient, Ubbe the kind and reasonable. The first day she met him, she promised to fight alongside him simply because he was a good man. She promised it even before she knew who he was, really, and now it's time to make good on that promise. She's terrified of that ax, at the harm it could to do Ubbe. And it's a strange thing, but she sees the rage and grief in Bjorn's eyes, and knows that somehow, she's tied up in some terrible pain. Ubbe's talking about it even now--does she even know, brother? This kindness in him seems infinite even in the face of violence. Her eyes slide from Ubbe's broad back to Bjorn. Something in her cracks. She remembers the feel of his callused palm against her cheek, the glimpse of vulnerability in his eyes before she let him walk away from her, and she knows he won't hurt her. He might kill Ubbe if he can, but he won't hurt her.

Thora uses the pillar to hurtle herself between the brothers, her face a mask of calm although she's screaming inside. The first time she met Bjorn, he told her respect was everything to her. He told her he was iron, and he forged himself. Earlier even that night, he showed her kindness and allowed her a small glimpse at some unspeakable pain. She doesn't understand, not even a little, but she hopes the little pieces she's seen of Bjorn can allow her some small hope at calming the storm in him. She isn't afraid of him, not like she was the first time she met him. She knows Ubbe probably won't let her stay between them for long, but she wants that ax gone before he tries to move her back. "The ax, Bjorn, please." Even as she speaks, she's holding her hand out toward him, asking for him to give her the ax. Her voice is calm and steady, she gives him a small, sad smile. Her bright green eyes are riveted to him and her body is tense, ready to throw herself at him and try to disarm him if she needs to. "Give me the ax, Bjorn, and we'll go outside." She allows a note of pleading to slip into her voice, her green eyes meeting his. They're full of sadness and guilt-two things he's probably feeling right now. She hopes it's enough to get through to him.

It became quiet. Very quiet. The people all around them had turned their heads, stopped their conversations just to see what was happening. Two Ragnarssons confronting each other. The silence that covered the great hall, was not present in Björn’s head. In there it was like a storm, raging, ready to burst even more than he had done already. Björn stared Ubbe right in the eyes, blue against blue. He saw a small glance of fear in his eyes, but his brother was good at covering that up. All of a sudden Ubbe looked at Thora, and then he seemed to understand. ”Is this what it is about?” He said, calmer than Björn had expected. From the side of his eye Björn looked at Thora all the same, but not for long. He needed to keep his focus on Ubbe. ”What did I do wrong? Tell me.” Where the ale helped Ubbe speaking easier, it worked in the exact other way for Björn. Everybody knew that words spoke louder than actions, but that didn’t apply for Björn. He did wanted to shout at him, but he knew that his axe would leave a much bigger memory, so why would he even try? He knew that he wouldn’t find the right words, not in the state he was in. ”Thora had nothing to do with the past. Does she even know brother?” Again Björn looked at Thora, trying to see her reaction on his brother’s words. He had told her something vaguely, but wasn’t able to tell her the complete story. Not yet. But by the looks of it, Ubbe was dying to tell her instead. And it made Björn feel so much more vulnerable, and angry. Björn fastened the grip around the shaft of his axe and rocked over the weight from his massive body from his left to his right foot. But Ubbe was right, Thora had nothing to do with the past. He just didn’t wanted to admit it, he just couldn’t. She made him feel weak and strong at the same time, confused and determined. He saw a chance for himself, to get back to his old self. But Ubbe had taken that chance from him. Ubbe knew the impact of Thora’s presence on Björn, but maybe didn’t realize how important she really was to him. In the end, Björn couldn’t really blame him for that. But he did, because the pain that it caused was just too much for him to handle.

He was just about to take another step forward when he heard Thora’s voice. Immediately he stood still again. ”The axe, Björn, please.” He does not hear her words. The only thing Björn sees, is her stepping away from the pillar, and the first thing he thinks about is that he needs to protect her from the rage that is going on between him and Ubbe. But as Thora steps even closer in between them, he sees the hand that she is holding out for him. And the he realizes, that it is he himself who is creating the danger. Björn looks at his axe, and back at Thora again. She radiates gentleness, as well on her face as in her voice. He was craving for her, for her love and the gentleness she is showing him, but the anger inside of him was just to present to give in to it. ”Give me the axe, Björn, and we’ll go outside.” Björn clenched his jaws firmly onto each other and looked away from her, back towards Ubbe who was still standing and watching him as well. He inhaled deeply, like a wild animal who was doubting whether to attack or to run. But in the end, it was her safety what was the most important. He would always protect her, from anybody. Even if that included himself. And then he reacted. Björn threw his axe on the floor, right in front of Thora’s feet. The claning sound of metal on stone pealed through the great hall. He knew he just could’ve handed it over to her, but his anger and his pride were just too big. ”Here is my axe.” He spoke with a raw voice. Immediately he looked away from as well Thora and his brother. It just wasn’t worth it. He knew he wouldn’t be able to deal with the same grieve he had dealt with years ago, so it was better to just let go. ”But do not follow me outside.” Yet again he turned around, trying to straighten his thoughts. The big wooden doors from the great hall came closer, and the people he passed by all took a step to the side. One part of him hoped that she would obey his words, the other part of him wished that she would ignore them and follow him anyway.. How could he be like this? How could he feel like this?

PostSubject: Re: this is a problem we can't run away from [Ubbe/Bjorn] this is a problem we can't run away from [Ubbe/Bjorn] EmptySun Oct 15, 2017 9:24 pm

Maybe she should have been afraid, facing Bjorn and his ax, but she wasn't, not for herself. She was afraid for Ubbe, knew that his blood would be on her hands if Bjorn hurt him. This is her fault. She knew maybe she shouldn't have let Bjorn walk away, but she's always been so weak when it comes to him. Ubbe makes her feel strong. Only Ubbe's safety could have driven her to face that storm of wrath on Bjorn's face, the grief and the pain and rage in his blue eyes. She holds herself still as Bjorn breathes in deeply, like he's debating throwing the axe past her and right into Ubbe's skull. His hand moves forward and Thora tenses, ready to spring into its path. This is her fault, all her fault, because she's too weak to face Bjorn, to face the past. Thora came to Kattegat to escape her past, to escape the fear of her ex-husband and the memories of the injuries he's done to her. She came to Kattegat to run away, and at every test the gods have placed before her then, she's run away.

The axe skitters to her feet with a loud bang, and Thora releases the breath she didn't even realize she was holding. Here is my axe. Bjorn's voice is terrible, raw, and her heart feels like it's breaking. Thora is tired of running, so sick of feeling weak. But do not follow me outside. It's those words that tell her what she has to do. She has no choice. She's let Bjorn walk away from her twice now, and the last time ended in near-disaster. She can't run away anymore, can't let Bjorn just walk away this time.

She watches as Bjorn walks away, toward the doors leading outside. Thora is shaking when she turns back to Ubbe, because she's just now registering how afraid she should have been when she stood between him and his brother. She closes the space between them in one quick step, burying her face against his chest for a moment and just trying to remember how to breathe. He smells so good, smells like leather and ale, and it's so comforting she wants to cry from relief. Ubbe makes her feel secure, makes her feel strong, and she knows she's going to need all the strength she can summon for what she has to do next. "I thought he was going to kill you." Her voice cracks on you, she draws a deep breath and pulls back to smile at him. "And about earlier.... No, I wouldn't have you choose different." She steps back, sadness and guilt all over her face. "I'll find you, after?" She tilts her head, questioning. She isn't even sure Ubbe will want to see her, after she follows Bjorn outside. But she knows she needs to do this, and she'll make it up to Ubbe after, however she needs to. He's too important to her, to not try to make it up to him. "I'm sorry," the whispered apology is out of her lips before she can stop it. She steps back again, back to the Bjorn's discarded axe, and sends a silent prayer up to the gods for sparing Ubbe.

She crouches down and picks up the axe. It's heavier than the ones she carries, and she tries hard not to think about the damage it could have done tonight. She follows Bjorn outside, spotting his massive frame easily in the darkness. She makes a show of inspecting the axe for damage, giving Bjorn a few moments to realize she's followed him even though he told her not to. Finally, she speaks, her voice just as raw as his had been inside. "I couldn't... Couldn't let you walk away from me again, Bjorn." She extends the hand holding the axe toward him, offering him his weapon back again. A sign of trust--she's trusting he won't use it against her, and hoping she made the right choice in following him.

Don't fear death if it comes, embrace it as if you lying down next to a beautifull woman. Don't look back to what you had but look forward to what you can achieve, in that way the Gods can gift you with beauty that even a woman doesn't have.
He could have been drunk but he wasn’t that drunk anymore on the moment Björn pulled that axe out. Ubbe knew his brother, he knew his brother to be great and fearless and strong, but he knew his brother to be short of temper on some moments to … especially this kind of moments. Normally Ivar always had to deal with that side, now it was Ubbe. He saw his youngest brother crawl aside the crowd, curious to what would happen but Ubbe couldn’t point his attention to somewhere else that the rage going through Björn his eyes, like an animal that was planning on tearing him apart. Ubbe hardly had an argument with Björn, but this. He looked over to Thora, hoping she would stay put until he solved this. But it was hard thinking, what should he say? In front of all those people? He didn’t want to ruin any reputation Björn had, he didn’t want to bring Porunn of, for all they knew it was a fight over a woman, not over the past and how hard it wrecked his elder brother.

If he thought Thora would stay put he was wrong, she moved in between them. ‘Thora.’ Ubbe reached out to grab her elbow but stopped when he saw Björn react on her, standing still within seconds. Ubbe his hand was still stretched out, ready to pull her away. But that wasn’t necessary. He couldn’t see her face but he saw how Björn looked and his arm lowered down again. Those two … he focused on her word, her calm steady words and his eyes leveled up to Björn again. He had knew Porunn, even when he was still young that woman was as fierce as Thora was, even Siggy, their daughter knew what she wanted … and his mother just didn’t care enough, Ubbe wasn’t there to care enough on that moment. He couldn’t know the heart pain but looking at Björn now he realized and he placed a step back, away from Thora, neutral to the both of them. She asked again and he complied, letting the axe ground before her feet. Ubbe couldn’t look away from his brother, scared in the corner of his body that this wasn’t over. His raw voice putted even more silence into the great hall before he warned Thora not to follow and he left.

Ubbe followed his brother outside with his eyes before, feeling how his heart got the situation in his body a little under control. This could have a very different outcome, he knew that more than anything. But it said a lot about how those two stand against each other. Ubbe slowly turned his eyes back to Thora. She walked the little distant and pushed her head against his chest. He breathed out, pushing his hand up to strangle it through her hair on the back of her head, his nose resting against it. Kill … Björn probably wanted somewhere but he knew there wasn’t a match, he had three more brothers and a mother walking around, if Björn wanted to do something like that he wouldn’t succeed. Despite … her words snuck in and he didn’t answer. When she looked up, he looked down, studying her face, pulling the corner of his mouth just a little up. All what went through his head was how his brother had looked, what he had done to get that look. He felt guilty in a way and his drunk state completely seemed to paralyze him from saying anything. When Thora said she had to go after him he just nodded, pressing a kiss against her temple before his hand left her. She apologized before walking away. There wasn't a point in following, he knew damn well they had to solve that among each other. But it tore him apart to let her go, only thinking about her safety.

Ubbe watched her going before he turned his head to the familiar dragging of Ivar his body. ‘Who is ruining a perfectly good feast now brother.’ Ivar smiled up. Ubbe looked to the pillar he stood against hardly minutes ago before turning around and walking out to. There was no point staying anyway, he could better go home, sleep it off and hope everything would seem a little brighter in the morning. He couldn’t forget the look, he couldn’t forget the pain, the hate … everything in Björn his eyes …

The cold air from the outside world welcomed him as an old friend. Björn inhaled deeply and paced through the streets until he was out of reach from all the noise that had returned in the great hall from the moment he had left. As he took another step, he noticed the weight that was normally on his waist had disappeared. He tried to grab his axe, only to realize it was gone. And then he remembered… He remembered what happened only minutes ago, he remembered how impulsive he had been. He couldn’t understand how he could’ve been so stupid to even hand over his axe. He brawled on the inside of his mouth and folded his hand into a fist. And the he struck. The wood from the small shed he smashed cracked, just as his skin. Blood dripped over his knuckles, and he felt a strong pain flowing through his finger bones. But the pain wasn’t the only thing he was feeling, he also suddenly felt how drunk he was. A nauseous feeling crawled up his throat, and before he realized what was happening, he already had surrendered himself to his own body. He leaned forward, retching before he started to vomit. The exact moment he was done, he heard footsteps behind him. Björn straightened his back and wiped his mouth with the back of his hand. And then he saw who was standing right aside him..

For a few seconds it was dead quiet, and Björn could do nothing but staring right in her eyes. They were flickering in the light from the torches on the side of the street and gave them even more expression than they already had. ”I couldn’t… Couldn’t let you walk away from me again, Björn.” Again he wiped his mouth, not knowing what to say or what to do. His eyes followed her hand, which she reached out for him, handing him over his axe. Björn frowned his forehead and shook his head. ”You should have stayed inside.” He said with a voice full of pain and darkness. He was mad at her for disobeying his order, since it would only make it harder for him. But at the same time she brought him relieve, space to breathe again. He took over the axe and immediately spread his arms to the side, showing his body to her. ”I have nothing to offer you but misery, Thora.” He said while raising his voice, almost shouting. And as he stood there, with his arms spread to the side, the sky started to rumble. A deep, dark sound that pealed through the night’s sky. It was a stately sight, -apart from his unsteadiness-, the great Björn Ironside. Finally he lowered his arms and the axe again and stared up to the black of night. ”In this way you have nothing more to give me but pain.” He turned his head to Thora again and took an unsteady step in her direction. ”And memories I’d rather forget if we cannot rebuild them together.” He said, suddenly more calmly than before and his face softened up. Gently he raised his hand and stroke with his fingers over the side of her cheek, leaving a trail of blood from his wounded hand. He stared her straight into the eyes, deeply inhaling through his nose. There was even a little smile on his lips. And then his mood switched, just as sudden as the thunder had appeared in the night’s sky. The gentleness in his eyes disappeared and made room for a new kind of anger. He pulled his hand back hasty and straightened his back, tightening his muscles. ”Now go back inside.” His voice shivered when he commanded her once again. Björn was angry, but it was a safe kind of anger. Or at least for her, since he would never ever hurt her. Björn only meant well, knew that he would protect her the most by pushing her away. It would be so much easier for him and for her. Eventually. Only she would never really understand why. Not until he would tell her the entire story.

Thora pauses as she hears Bjorn retching, gives him a few moments to himself. She pities him although she's knows he's only sick because he's drunk. She tries to replace the pity with anger, that he would dare to draw his axe on Ubbe, but to her shock she finds that all she wants to do is comfort him. She resists the urge to close the distance between them, to rub his back, try to soothe him. When he wipes his mouth with the back of his hand, she starts forward again. In only a few short steps, she's beside him. Bjorn turns to look at her, and his gaze is so heavy she feels like it could force her feet to sink into the soft earth. She doesn't waver, returning his gaze with bright green eyes. There's softness in her eyes, a gentleness she rarely makes use of. Her father was a farmer, she grew up training horses. That farmer's gentleness always lurks beneath the surface, although it's seldom seen. It's hard to remember how to be soft sometimes, when all she wants to be is tough. There's no place for gentleness in a shieldmaiden, but she's drunk and full of a heavy, aching sadness that she doesn't quite understand.

She holds his axe out to him, and feels his words like a blow. You should have stayed inside. His voice was so full of pain it deepened the ache in her chest into something sharper, more insistent, something that felt more like a breaking than an ache. She doesn't answer him, only shrugs with one shoulder as he takes the axe from her. Her hand drops down to hang by her side as he spreads his arms, the axe still clenched in his hand. I have nothing to offer you but misery, Thora. His voice is louder than she expected, and she jumps slightly. Thunder rumbles through the dark night and there he stands before her, arms spread wide, as if he commanded the thunder himself. Maybe it's the ale but in that moment she's so struck by him she can barely breathe. He lowers his arms and the moment of quiet awe passes, but it's an image she's sure will be burned in her memory until her breath stops. In this way you have nothing more to give me but pain.

She's shaking her head in response, her green eyes bright as she meets his blue ones. "Not pain, Bjorn, and not misery. Strength. We give each other strength, I think." She lifts her face toward the sky. She follows his lead, tilting her face to the black sky, wondering why Thor chose that moment when Bjorn took his axe to beat his hammer. She has no talent for discerning the intentions of the gods, but in her drunken state she wonders if it has a special significance. He speaks again, of memories he would prefer to forget, and she lowers her gaze to his face. His expression is softer now. He strokes his fingers gently over her face and she feels the wetness of his blood on her skin, sees the way it glints on his hand in the moonlight. She's surprised he's bleeding, she hadn't seen him hit the shed. Her eyes meet his, unwavering, and the small step she takes toward him is something beyond her control.

And then the softness in his eyes is gone and her cheek is cold where his hands just were. He's ordering her back inside, his tone harsh, a command. Thora's sigh seems to come from her very bones. The same softness is still in her eyes. It got through to him before, maybe it will again. "Let me take care of your hand first, and then I'll go home." She feels like she should offer him a smile, but with that sharp, cracking pain in her chest, she simply can't.

”Not pain, Björn, and not misery. Strength. We give each other strength, I think.” He listened to her words carefully, with all the focus that was left in his drunk body. ”Strength.” He whispered with a raspy voice and stared at the sky just like she did. Then why do I feel weaker than ever before? He thought, but did not let the words slip through his lips. He had made his decision and was not planning on changing it again. It was a hard decision, one that he ought the best for both of them. Even though it did not felt quite right. Yet. There were no wounds time could not heal. Or at least that was what he hoped. So for one last time he raised his hand towards her face, with a gentle, almost loving look in his eyes. This was goodbye. He saw her wavering as she stepped closer, hesitation that was not there when she had given herself to Ubbe. And then his face changed: Anger.

Thora’s face, on the other hand, kept exactly the same as before. She was not afraid of him, nor his axe. He tried to see what his reaction caused to her, by observing her eyes. But there was nothing to be seen apart from that same softness that was able to weaken his heart. ”Let me take care of your hand first, and then I’ll go home.” Björn sighed deeply and turned his head away from her. Why was she always ignoring his orders? The more time she spent with her, the more she reminded him of her. And then he realized it was his turn to reject the help, the same way Porunn had rejected his years ago. ”My hand does not need caring.” He said as he looked back at her. Björn bit his lip, dying to say the next thing that came up in his mind. But he just couldn’t. So there was the same order again.. ”Go home.” His voice dark again. ”And do not test me.” And this time he did not only command her. He also warned her. Björn walked a few steps backwards to make sure that she was not following him, before he turned his body and started to walk nowhere in particular.

Eventually he reached the shores from the bay, saw the moonlight reflecting in the calm water. As he came closer he could smell the salt in the air, hear the thunder still rumbling in the night’s sky. And he was just standing there, the waves rolling over his feet. And then he realized that he was just an ordinary man, meaning nothing to the world as he stood there. Maybe to the people from Kattegat he was known and respected. The great Ironside. But everything came from his father. His name, the wealth.. Which meaningful thing had he himself ever done to the world? Except from taking people’s lives and protecting Kattegat from people that wanted to take over the Kingdom from his father? Björn kicked the water, but the only thing it did was splash up. Frustrated he shouted at the thunder, asking the Gods to guide him his own way, and not the one from his father. And then came the realization.. He just had to look elsewhere, somewhere far away from Kattegat.

This time Thora isn't surprised by Bjorn, the way his moods change like the shifting of tides. He whispers the word strength back to her and she only nods. It is the thing both of them strive for, the thing that decides who survives. She's survived so far and so has Bjorn, there must be something strong about them. But when Bjorn's face changes, from something so gentle it almost looks like love, to that old familiar anger she's so used to seeing on his face, all she feels is weak. She's failed--failed him, but more importantly, failed herself. Again. She isn't even strong enough to look at him anymore, to face that anger. She wishes she had the strength that seems to come so easily to him, but Thora seems to gain her strength by turning weakness into it. It's a slow, painful process, but it's strength that doesn't fail when she needs it.

And right now, Bjorn is her weakness. She doesn't want him to see it, drops her gaze to the ground and hides her face behind a curtain of hair as he tells her his hand doesn't need caring. The sadness in her right now is crushing, everything made so much worse by the ale, and she doesn't even feel strong enough for her legs to carry her home, never mind following him again. He's going to finally get what he wants, space and time, simply because she isn't strong enough to stand against him anymore. The thought of bending to his will so easily rouses some of the old defiance in her, enough so that she can finally lift her head to his face. Something in his face makes her angry, some small spark that gives her enough strength to at least watch him walk away. She wants to scream at him, to give him a taste of that rage that he seems to always feel toward her, but even drunk she isn't foolish enough to test him again. She feels another cracking somewhere in her chest. Some small, broken sound escapes from her, she's quick to slap a hand against her mouth to try to stifle it.

The sight of him walking away from her--always walking away, and she's letting him although it never leads to anything but trouble--fills her throat with burning. She barely manages to turn in the direction of her house before she vomits. Thora closes her eyes for a moment, wiping her hand across her mouth, and starts off in the direction of her house. All she wants to do is sleep for a lifetime, and maybe she'll finally wake up feeling stronger.
