| Having no plans for the afternoon, Hvitserk had decided to go for a walk on his own. You never know what you could get up to or who you might run into when you wandered. He’d decided to bring along his bow and arrows at the last minute, in case he had a chance to do any hunting. If he could manage to catch a rabbit or two, it couldn’t hurt.
He’d come to a stream and decided to follow it for a while, having no real destination in mind, and knowing both people and animals congregated near fresh water. He was a bit disappointed that he hadn’t spotted any game yet but wasn’t too worried. For once he hadn’t bragged to his brother’s about his intentions before leaving, so coming home empty handed wouldn’t embarrass him.
Hvitserk came to a stop as he heard something in the distance. It was a strange sound, and he wasn’t really sure what could be until more sounds accompanied it. Now he was fairly certain there was a girl wherever the noise was coming from, and immediately turned in that direction. Either someone needed rescuing, or someone was getting up to something that sounded fun, and either way, Hvitserk wanted to be involved.
He came up behind a young woman hacking away at a tree with her weapon and when he moved to her left a bit, finally recognized her. It was Hilde, another thegn from Kattegat. “Did the tree say something rude to you? I think it’s probably sorry,” he spoke up loudly while still a good distance from her, not wanting to startle her and risk her turning her axe on him. He was grinning at her now, and nodded towards the tree. “Want to train against something that actually fights back?” He was always looking for more practice, after all. |

| The woods were Hilde's favorite place to train in. The training camp was quite fine, but the sun was too harsh on the girl's skin and she didn't like it when it was crowded. She was a good fighter, afterall, she was trained in Uddevalla by a fierce valkyrie, but just didn't like to show off and brag about it.
After her morning training session, she went straight to the forest, to keep training there. Of course, having a real person to fight with was easier and also more challenging than fighting a big standing tree, but that had to do for the time being, since no one trained as much as she did. Well, not that she'd ask someone to train with her anyway.
Few hours later, Hilde was sweaty, her blonde hair glued to the back of her neck and her temple. She stopped for a brief second and pulled her hair up in a messy ponytail, then started hitting the tree again. Not long time later, a voice completely crushed her concentration and startled the girl, making her jump slightly. She turned around and locked her eyes with the ones of the person that was talking to her, only to find out that the person was Hvitserk. The prince. He was known to be outgoing and friendly, but Hilde never spoke to him because... Well, because she didn't know how to.
“Want to train against something that actually fights back?” Was he challenging her? This was the first time she got to interact with him and she was glad it wasn't just a plain conversation. She knew how to fight and that was the only thing she was confident in. She could speak to him with actions instead of using words and she was up for the challenge. The girl raised the hand that was holding the axe and grabbed her sword with the other hand, showing both weapons to the boy. "Which one do you like?" The girl said with a smirk, fire and excitement burning in her bright eyes. |

| Hvitserk’s smug grin didn’t fade for a second when she asked him which weapon he preferred. So they were definitely doing this, it seemed. He didn’t mind too much, he just hadn’t really expected to be fighting anyone on this walk. But, what could you do? And he was definitely having a hard time tearing his gaze away from the excitement he read in her eyes. This was someone who enjoyed fighting.
Finally answering her question, he bowed dramatically and replied, “Ladies choice.” But after just a moment looked back up at her and he added, “Just kidding, swords. Definitely swords.” His cheeky grin never once faded as he drew his own weapon, standing across from her and letting his arm hang at his side.
When he thought she was ready, he lifted his sword, pointing it in her direction, took a small, quick step forward but immediately withdrew it and let his arm fall to his side again. “Actually, do you maybe want to just talk or something? I’m tired already,” he joked, because she definitely looked like she was ready to kick some ass, and his ass was the only one around. “We can fight if you want to, but talking is also fun?”
It probably helped that she was most definitely one of the most attractive women he’d ever seen. How had they not spoken before? She seemed like exactly the sort of person he’d have befriended long ago.”Ladies choice,” he repeated, with another elaborate bow, “For real this time. Do we fight,” he nodded towards her sword, and then gestured to a nice comfy looking patch of grass on the ground, “or do we sit?” |

| His steady grin, kept Hilde’s own smirk right on her lips. The girl knew he was a bit of a player, but they were going to fight afterall. Everytime she had to fight with someone they’d always get extremely serious and concentrated, but Hilde didn’t need that anymore. After a lifetime of fighting, her body knew exactly what to do and she loved it.
”Ladies choice” The boy said. Hilde huffed a little laugh and let go of the sword in the exact moment when he said ”Just kidding, swords. Definitely swords.” ”That isn’t fair, prince.” She said with a smile and grabbed her sword from the ground once again, letting go of her axe this time. She prepared to the fight again and once she was ready, he took a quick step forward and so did she. His immediate decision to withdrew his arm left her confused and speechless. Was he serious about this or not?
Hilde followed Hvitserk with her gaze and with a confused look on her face, trying to get through his intentions. Was he giving up? Was he trying to trick her? She stayed cautious until he spoke again. ”Actually, do you maybe want to just talk or something? I’m already tired.” He wasn’t serious about fighting. Hilde shook her head and finally lowered the arm that was holding the sword, laughing slightly. ”Ladies choice” The boy said once again. Was she supposed to believe him this time? As if he was reading her thoughts, Hvitserk continued ”For real this time. Do we fight,” Hilde looked in the direction he pointed with his head. ”or do we sit?” He concluded with a real question this time.
Now, what was Hilde supposed to do? She wasn’t really keen on talking with people, just because she wasn’t used to, but he seemed like a funny person to talk to. She had lived in Kattegat for quite a long period now so she should’ve at least talked with everyone there, but this was her first time she got to talk with Hvitserk. Hilde unlocked her gaze from his and went sitting on the patch of grass he had just pointed at. ”We sit.” She agreed, smiling a bit. That seemed like a nice idea, she was tired to train anyway, wasn’t she? |

| Hvitserk laughed when he realized he’d chosen swords as soon as she’d dropped hers. Whoops. And he sent her a grin as he shrugged his shoulders at her a little bit. It hadn’t been deliberate, it was just easier to practice with swords than axes, in his experience.
He felt a little bad that he was messing with her when he clearly didn’t know her well, but not bad enough to take any of it back. This was him, this was what he did. He messed with people. Sure, they probably didn’t enjoy it as much as he did, but that wasn’t his problem. Besides, he was trying to make new friends! That was supposed to be a good thing, right?
His grin widened when Hilde chose to sit. She sat down and he immediately followed suit, sitting down directly across from her. He wasn’t really sure what kind of questions she was prepared to answer, and just rattled off anything that entered his mind.
“Do you come out here to beat up trees often? Do you not like trees? How come we’ve never spoken before? How long have you lived in Kattegat? You aren’t originally from here, are you?” He was certain that if she’d grown up here, he’d know her better by now. He was a fairly outgoing person, and was perfectly capable of being friends with men and women alike. Hopefully his incessant questions wouldn’t make her want to leave too quickly.
He actually felt bad, worried he might be overwhelming her. “Okay, sorry, that was a lot. But now you ask me?” What if she didn’t have any questions for him? What if she didn’t actually care who he was and simply wanted to get him to leave her alone? He nearly laughed at the thought. That didn’t seem likely to him. Everyone liked him. |

| The little grin that appeared on his face when she dropped her sword gave her the feeling he wasn't even remotely sorry for messing with her. She really couldn't understand how people liked training with swords rather than axes. For her whole childhood she was taught to fight with axes and also weapon was really nicely done, coming from Uddevalla. She knew she was going to win, but he suddenly changed idea and she wasn't so sure anymore.
Hilde didn't know what convinced her on changing her plans and sitting on the ground to talk. That wasn't something she usually did,she basically never stopped training during the day. Maybe the fact that even if he was a thegn as she was, he still was the prince of Kattegat. Hilde didn't want to hurt his pride once she would've beaten him, and she was most likely to do it. Also the girl had been training for hours, so she was tired. Sure, that was why. She was just being reasonable.
The boy sat right in front of her right before starting showering her with sudden and random questions. “Do you come out here to beat up trees often? Do you not like trees? How come we’ve never spoken before? How long have you lived in Kattegat? You aren’t originally from here, are you?” That were a lot of words. Hilde didn't even know if she could remember them all and answer clearly, but hopefully she didn't really have to. ”Yes actually I do come here often,” The girl stated before huffing and shaking her head. ”And of course I like trees.” She continued. What kind of question was that in the first place? Hilde couldn't hold back a grin and rolled her eyes at him. ”Yes, you're right. I was not born in here.” She said lowering her voice tone. She'd never told anyone anything about what she was before arriving in Kattegat, she really didn't know why she was telling him right now.
He told her that now was her turn to ask questions. Her brain started working in order to find something nice to ask him. ”Why do you like swords? Axes are better.” She spitted out without thinking twice. That was a stupid question, wasn't it. She couldn't really lead a conversation on, but hopefully that would've distract him from his questions and her answers. She didn't know if she was ready to tell anyone who she really was.

| Despite what he’d always assumed was a natural talent for talking to women, and making friends in general, Hvitserk was having a hard time getting a read on Hilde. Did she think he was just being an ass? It wouldn’t be the first time that had happened, because he occasionally rubbed people the wrong way, but she was pretty and he wanted her to like him. Because what’s not to like? Honestly.
He nodded politely when she answered his first couple questions, but grinned and shook his head a bit when she said she liked trees. He’d only been teasing, but maybe that wasn’t something she was really used to? After all, this wasn’t Sassa or any of his other friends, who knew not to take anything he said very seriously.
When she admitted that he was right, and she wasn’t originally from Kattegat, he perked up a bit. He’d always wanted to travel, and was really interested in listening to the stories people had to tell about where they came from. “Where are you from?” he asked next, not stopping to consider that it might not be something she wanted to discuss.
He grinned again when she asked a question of her own. Hvitserk had been a bit worried this would turn into a one sided conversation, and was glad that didn’t appear to be the case. “Axes are better, but swords are easier to defend against, and I don’t know your fighting style. I didn’t want you to disarm me in a minute flat. How embarrassing would that be?” He laughed, because he didn’t embarrass very easily, and that wouldn’t have been the first time he was disarmed quickly in training. But it was hard to impress a pretty girl when she was a better fighter than you were.
“Why do you ‘come here often’? We should’ve been friends ages ago,” he winked at her, and hoped he wasn’t going to say anything that scared her off. It was rare that he found someone his own age, especially another thegn, that he didn’t know very well, and wanted to remedy that if he could. |

| Hilde didn’t honestly know if she felt annoyed by him messing with her or not. She felt like he was overconfident and that should’ve been annoying, but somehow that attitude suited him. She didn’t know him that much, except something she heard from people that were talking about him in the training field. Despite that though, he was managing not to disappoint her expectations.
She hoped that he wasn’t going to focus on what she was saying, but he looked really interested in what she had to say. “Where are you from?” That was the only question she didn’t really want to answer. Never speaking to anyone had its pros because she was never asked such a question and she didn’t have to face the problem of revealing too much of herself. Now there she was, sitting in front of a boy she never talked to before and had to decide if she was willing to tell him anything about her past life or not. The girl looked at her hands, intertwined on her lap. She didn’t want him to feel her uneasiness, but she couldn’t help it. She flinched her skin with two fingers and then sighed. ”Uddevalla.” She simply said in a whisper. Now it was done, he was the first person in Kattegat she ever told that and for some strange reason, it didn’t feel so wrong. Maybe, since she had lived in Kattegat for a while now, she was throwing her past behind her back? She really hoped that was the case.
Somehow she managed to move the conversation from herself to what she knew better. Weapons. “Axes are better, but swords are easier to defend against, and I don’t know your fighting style. I didn’t want you to disarm me in a minute flat. How embarrassing would that be?” A small laugh escaped the girl’s throat, her face brightened up with her rare smile. ”A lot.” She said nodding in agreement. ”But I could disarm you in a minute flat no matter what weapon I am using.” She said, bragging a little about her skills. She knew she was a great warrior, but never really admitted it out loud, it was the first time she had done it. He was managing to make her say lots of things for the first time actually.
“Why do you ‘come here often’? We should’ve been friends ages ago,” Hilde simply shrugged her shoulders. ”I like it here, it’s quiet.” She said looking at the trees around them, then moved her gaze towards him and locked her ice-coloured eyes in his. ”Well, at least it was.” She added with a raised eyebrow. She tried to keep a serious expression, but couldn’t really manage to do that and a little smile appeared on her lips. |

| Despite her apparent lack of enthusiasm when it came to talking about herself, or maybe just talking in general, what did he know? Hvitserk thought things were going fairly well. He was being his normal, charming self, and he’d definitely noticed her smile at least a little. Which looked like a win to him. He watched her look down at her hands and felt a little bit bad for asking questions in the first place. Technically she could tell him to get lost and simply choose not to tell him a thing, but he knew few people would actually chose that route.
He smiled when he told him she was from Uddevalla. “That’s cool,” he replied with a nod, and chose not to ask any further questions about it. Whether she didn’t want to talk about that specific thing or simply didn’t want to talk at all, he didn’t want to pry where he wasn’t wanted. He most definitely preferred being wanted.
An enormous grin broke across his face at her boast and he shook his head at her. “Well then, we’ll have to test that some time,” he answered, still grinning, and puffing his chest out for a minute like he was trying to appear bigger, stronger, more fierce. And then he quickly resumed his previous relaxed position and simply nodded at her. “You’re probably right. I saw the way you were attacking that tree, I don’t think I want to fight you at all.”
Hilde told him it was quiet here, which was why she visited it, and he laughed at her when she amended the statement. “Oh, I’m very sorry I’ve disrupted your quiet," he started, trying to look offended, but failing miserably. "I’m just trying to make new friends, it figures I’d come across someone like you.” He paused then, wondering if she’d take the bait. He was certainly having more fun than he’d expected to find in the woods, and just hoped he wasn’t alone in that regard. |

| Having a social status like his, was the key to everything. Hilde knew nobody would’ve said anything to him about his normally annoying attitude, in fact, everyone praised him for being like he was. Outgoing, strong, fierce, confident, maybe not the most cunning of the Ragnarssons, but he surely knew his ways.
Knowing that though, didn’t change the fact that Hilde hesitated a lot before answering his question about her birthplace. She pondered whether she was doing the right thing and eventually chose to tell him because she was determined to leave her past behind her back once and for all. Maybe that was finally her way to start doing it. “That’s cool,” He only replied. Hilde raised her gaze towards him only to see his grin gone and his head moving up and down in a nod. Was he really done with asking her about her past? Did he really understand how much she didn’t like talking about it? Was he offended because she didn’t want to talk to him about that? Her head was spinning and those questions were blurring her thoughts.
Luckily the topic of the conversation changed soon, giving her the chance to recover from her confused state to a more confident one. She didn’t know how strong this boy was, she didn’t know how he used to fight, but nevertheless she told him she could’ve beaten him easily. She wasn’t really sure about that, since he was a man and he was supposed to be naturally stronger than her, but she knew she had skills. “Well then, we’ll have to test that some time,” Hilde finally managed to put a smile on her lips when she saw how he was acting to look bigger. ”I would love that.” She simply said before a little laugh escaped her throat. “You’re probably right. I saw the way you were attacking that tree, I don’t think I want to fight you at all.” Her smile faded a bit at those words and she slightly pouted. ”Are you afraid now?” She teased him a little.
It was true that the place was mostly quiet, nobody actually knew about this specific part of the forest, but Hilde often went there to train. That was her special spot. The fact that he discovered it, didn’t bother her though. “Oh, I’m very sorry I’ve disrupted your quiet," He was trying to look hurt, but after he laughed at her words, she couldn’t just believe him. ”You should be.” She said, somehow managing to put a serious expression on her face. "I’m just trying to make new friends, it figures I’d come across someone like you.” He then said, leaving her a little confused. How was he sure that he was going to find her there? He couldn’t be, right? He didn’t follow her, didn’t he? ”Now you’re being ridiculous, Hilde.” She said to herself before looking at him. He was probably joking like he did since they started talking. Now that she understood that, she had to answer in the right way. But what exactly was the right way she didn’t know. ”Do you usually make friends with trees?” She then said with her eyebrows furrowed in concern, a little grin instinctively growing on her lips. |

| It was probably a very good thing that Hvitserk couldn’t read minds because if he could, he’d have learned the very rude things Hilde was thinking about him, and been absolutely crushed. Crushed. But since he couldn’t, he was thoroughly enjoying himself while teasing and trying to get to know the thegn sitting across from him. He wasn’t really sure if she was flirting back with him. It didn’t feel like it, but maybe she was just shy? Maybe she wasn’t good at flirting? Or maybe she wasn’t interested. Which, obviously didn’t make any sense but she was from Uddevalla and he’d heard the people there were a bit odd. Though clearly, quite attractive. From the very little he knew about her, he’d uncovered through his incredible intuition and calculated observations that she liked to fight. And he liked to fight. #soulmates. So if that was the only way he’d be able to get to know her, he was willing to make that sacrifice, and fight her. And he was honestly looking forward to it. Even moreso because he was quite confident she was going to kick his ass. So when she said she’d ‘love to’ he couldn’t wipe the grin from his face. Oh yeah, so would he. She teased him and he decided she was totally into him because that’s how you flirt. And he just nodded at her. “ I am! You’re very intimidating. I’ll still fight you though, since you’re clearly looking forward to it,” Hvitserk answered with a wink. Because he too was flirting. He couldn’t help the bark of laughter when she asked if he usually made friends with trees. Ubbe had made a comment about him and trees too not too long ago. Did he look like someone who… talked to trees? He assumed those people were insane, and therefore, he did not fit the description. But he wasn’t about to turn the conversation in a serious direction, obviously. Hvitserk was barely even acquainted with the word. “ I might. Why? You just beat them up? You’re very violent.” Ripping up a handful of grass and then letting the blades fall down slowly again, he looked up at her and nodded in the direction of the village. “ We should train together. And we should also go get a drink together.” He was so smooth. |

| The wish to be able to read minds was strong. It would’ve been so easy to the girl if she knew what he was thinking about her and maybe what was right to say in a situation like that and what just wasn’t. Fighting looked like the only thing they had in common and they weren’t even fighting anymore. Talking about fighting wasn’t exciting like actually doing it though and it was even less efficient than a real fight. He looked like he was sure he was going to lose against her, but the more they were talking, the more Hilde started thinking he could actually have been good at fighting more than he wanted to show.
A little grin grow on his lips and Hilde couldn’t understand why was his reaction like that. The girl wasn’t even really aware of the fact that she was teasing him, she asked him if he was afraid because she didn’t believe he could’ve been scared of fighting with her. “I am! You’re very intimidating. I’ll still fight you though, since you’re clearly looking forward to it,” He winked at her and Hilde furrowed her eyebrows. ”I bet you are a better fighter than what you say you are.” She voiced her thoughts and raised an eyebrow at him.
His laughter when she asked about his tree friends, was contagious and Hilde started laughing lightly at him, not able to hold her laugh back anymore. “I might. Why? You just beat them up? You’re very violent.” The girl’s laugh slowly faded away while he was talking. She brought her knees to her chest and hugged them with both arms. ”I’ll make sure to ask for forgiveness, then.” She said looking at the tree she was beating before he arrived and then moved her head towards him, to look at him with a spontaneous smirk on her lips.
She looked at him while he was ripping up the grass around him and saw him pointing to the direction of the village with his head. “We should train together. And we should also go get a drink together.” He said. Hilde had already said she was going to train with him, since that was basically the only thing she did for her whole day, but when he talked about drinking together, the girl panicked a bit. Even if she managed not to show her panic, she had no idea of what to say to him. She never had friends in her whole life and the only time she drank outside her home, surrounded by people was at the harvest feast. And she became a drunk mess. She didn’t want him to see her like that, but she also didn’t want to refuse and push away her first chance to change her life, even if a little. ”Sure.” She simply said in the end. ”I like drinking.” She added, only to ease her own panic and laugh it off. |

| While Hvitserk had originally hoped to have a real conversation, he was quickly becoming adjusted to the fact that Hilde didn’t seem interested in talking overly much. Which, honestly, didn’t really bother him. He could talk enough for the both of them. Though there was a good chance Hilde wouldn’t really appreciate it but he would. That’s what mattered, right? Hmm, probably not. Whoops.
Though he was quite certain that she was into him, because why wouldn’t she be, she seemed to be confused when he winked at her, and well, basically by his entire personality in general, and when she told him she believed he was probably a better fighter than he let on, he could only grin in response. “I certainly like to think so. But bragging can be unattractive to some people, so I try to take my time getting there.” After a moment, he wondered, “So where do you land on it? Bragging, is it attractive or unattractive? Cause I can do both.”
His bit about the trees seemed to have gotten a reaction though, and he honestly can’t believe he’s about to be that guy who’s friends with trees now. But evidently, that was his destiny. And she’d laughed, so he could roll with it. “Please do, they’re very sensitive.” Hvitserk attempted to keep a straight face but it didn’t last too long, and he was once again grinning at her.
Hilde didn’t immediately respond to his offer to train and also get a drink, and he realized after he’d said it that she’d already agreed to train with him and that he was a bit of an idiot sometimes but maybe she wouldn’t notice. BUT THEN SHE SAID YES. Or rather ‘sure’ which was slightly less enthusiastic than ‘yes’ but he’d take what he could get. “Okay, great. We should do that. Go drinking. Soon.” He meant like now, but didn’t want to seem pushy, and simply grinned at her like an idiot, nodding his head occasionally. He was going to get to fight her, he was going to get to drink with her, all things that involved spending time with her. His day was definitely looking up. |

| Talking seemed to be Hvitserk favourite sport. It could’ve been nice, given the fact that Hilde wasn’t as talkative as he was. He could talk for the both of them. At the same time though, the girl knew she somehow had to react and reply to his words, otherwise she could’ve appeared rude. ”Aargh, why is this so difficult.” She cursed herself in her own mind.
His grin couldn’t leave his face. Hilde didn’t know if she was extremely annoyed by the fact he didn’t look uneasy like she was feeling, or she just loved how that grin looked on his mouth. ”By the gods, what are you even thinking about?” Suddenly and almost unconsciously, the girl built a wall on her mind, as to block the direction her thoughts were heading to. “I certainly like to think so. But bragging can be unattractive to some people, so I try to take my time getting there.” Well, if he thought that, then why was he still there? Talking with her? Bragging was basically the first thing the girl did when she opened her mouth to talk to him. ”It is good to be aware of your skills, isn’t it?” She asked. It looked like she was just telling him her opinion on the matter, but she asked more to seek an approval for her own behaviour. “So where do you land on it? Bragging, is it attractive or unattractive? Cause I can do both.” That question made her relax and a smile spontaneously grow on her lips. He was joking. Again. ”He’s joking. Right?” She had to stop talking to herself and try to talk to him for once. ”It can be both. It depends on the person I guess.” She shrugged her shoulders while looking up.
Her eyes landed back on him once she said she felt like she had to apologise for being rude to the trees. “Please do, they’re very sensitive.” She raised an eyebrow, knowing that he couldn’t keep a straight face for more than two seconds. He didn’t disappoint her when a grin grew once again on his face. She simply giggled and shook her head few times, leaning back on the tree that was behind her. It was weird. She never laughed that much with anyone, the only exception being that night when she got dead drunk and couldn’t even feel her body. But now she knew exactly what she was doing, she knew why she was laughing and it just felt extremely weird... but nice.
No one ever asked her to join them. No one ever looked like they enjoyed the girl’s company, so him suggesting they should go drink together was as weird as her being all smiley. She didn’t know how to reply, as always, but this time, she took her time to really consider his words. Was it worth it? Yes. Was she ready? Absolutely not. “Okay, great. We should do that. Go drinking. Soon.” She heard how he slightly changed his tone when saying “soon”, but she purposely chose not to investigate further on the reason why he did it. That was what she always did. Think. About the reasons why people did certain things, about why things were as they were. It was tiring, she was tired. Hilde nodded firmly at him, a little and shy smile slowly growing up on her lips, her cheeks growing redder with every second.
The girl brought the back of her hand on her forehead to wipe away non-existent drops of sweat. ”Maybe I uhh… Maybe I should go.” She started, slowly getting up, hiding her face with her hair, looking everywhere but towards him. ”It’s… It’s getting late, I’ve been training for too long.” Hilde tried to put up an excuse, but it just didn’t sound as she thought it would’ve sounded. |
