damned if i do
damned if i don’t.

It was as if everything that could possibly go wrong, had gone wrong that day. He had basically done everything he was supposed to do, in a way it wasn’t good enough for the people he was working for to be satisfied with the results. That meant they got annoyed or irritated. And people who were annoyed, usually started yelling. No one ever gave a thrall some slack. He had just had a bad day, wasn’t as focused as usual. He wasn’t allowed to just take a day off. He always had to jump for people he didn’t even like. Forced to do every task they came up with. It bugged him until far past bedtime. Or whatever they called a bed. It was merely some straw with a blanket. It wasn’t even warm enough to keep him comfortable. Maurr rolled to his other side and sighed heavily. After two hours of just staring at the ceiling, he had enough of it.

So the young man carefully tried sneak out of the shed he shared with some other thralls. He brought his blanket, to shield him from the cold breeze. He didn’t really know what he was doing, didn’t really have a plan either. He just wanted to get out of here. So he started walking. Quietly, past some guards, out of the village. He just kept going, without a clear goal. He didn’t even know how long he had been walking. Maybe he was going in circles. At least at some point he saw some small buildings. It was cold, so he decided to hide there for a while. Maybe take a nap before he would go further. Maurr forced open the door, and discovered that the stable was empty. Maybe the livestock was kept somewhere else during the night? A bit weary he entered the shed, after which he hid himself in a pile of hay. A quick nap wouldn’t hurt.. Right?

His soft bed was so warm, with a warm fire burning close to it so he could feel the heat even through his sleep. It was so satisfying to lay down in the pile of fur after a ‘hard’ day of work. HARD!!! Day of work. Well actually the fact was that Vern did not think of Farming as hard work anymore. Not now that he had gotten used to it. It had become more fun to him and with winter coming there was little to be done on the fields. It was more taking care of the life stock and he loved that. ‘Playing’ with the animals calmed him and he saw it more as a fun time really then just a job. He had to admit that at first he thought farming was hell and that he would not be able to do it. But now it was easy as cutting cheese. He even found it easier than being a Prince. More and harder work, but little to worry about and being on himself it was relaxing. Having a best friend that had become more of a brother then a friend and his parents becoming slightly as his family as well. He was happy.

Though a heavy feeling would come over him more and more every day. Debating if he should return home or really try to forget his past life and be the farmer he was now. What felt most heavy was that he had to LIE to those who he cared dearly for. Something he hated and he was afraid for what might happen if his try identity ever came out. Would they hate him? He then might have lost not only his real family but also lose the family he had chosen for himself. Something that might finally break him completely.

Now however in his sleep he had nothing to worry about. Only dreaming about beautiful princesses and fierce battles, with him being the hero of the story of course. But! His sleep got roughly interrupted by the sound of a door being forced open. It was light, oh so light almost careful even. But as the trained warrior he was, he had also been trained on waking up at the smallest sound that should not be. Vern automatically shot up his eyes wide as he tried to listen. But there was nothing. He stayed still for a while, just listening and looking around. Before he narrowed his eyes and got up. Stumbling trying to put on his clothes and hopping up and down as he tried to put his shoes on. Before he froze and looked around. He had to see what that sound had been… Maybe it was a Thief! Or worse, a wolf trying to eat the sheep! If so he needed a weapon. But… His own Sword was hidden away in one of the stables and he did not have time to go get it.

So he would go with the only thing that a farmer could take, Some knifes and of course a pitchfork. ‘Armed’ he sneaked out of the house. Peaking outside and looking in the dark. Everything was silent. As silent as he could he looked around. Going from the different stables, soon his eyes fell on one. The door being forced open clearly. And… It was not done by any wolf. His face got serious as he narrowed his eyes walking up to the stable and grabbing the pitchfork with a strong hold as he moved the door slowly open with his foot. Before slowly peaking in.

Not a soul… He narrowed his eyes and then sneaked in. Looking into the different quarters. Maybe whoever had been here left noticing there was nothing in here worth taking. It was a strong possibility. He had not seen anyone else walking around his grounds. He slowly relaxed and looked around one last time before smiling. Well seemed he could get back to sleep. With that thought he flipped the pitchfork over and stabbed it into the haystack.

While he was trying to get comfortable in the haystack, he thought about his actions. Maybe he had been too impulsive. Would he get in trouble now? What if he didn’t show up at the docks tomorrow? He shouldn’t have gone out. It was the first time he had ever done that and he had no idea what the consequences would be. No one really attempted to run away. But was he actually on the run now? He didn’t know where he was, but he was still in Skagen, right? So technically he wasn’t doing anything wrong. He would just go back in the morning, and no one would have noticed he was gone. But first, he had to take a little nap. It was dark outside, and he would probably get even more lost if he tried to find his way back to the village now. It was smarter to wait for the sun to start rising, so he could actually try to figure out what the shortest way back was. He wrapped himself in his blanket some more, dug himself into the hay, to get warm. He didn’t know if it was freezing, but it was for sure really cold tonight.

Just when he had found a good position, he could hear footsteps outside. His eyes were wide open now, and he could feel his heart rate going up. The other person was moving very slowly, and he could only hear him making soft noises from time to time. He or she sure knew how to sneak around. Maurr tried to hold his breath and only inhaled as softly as possible. After a while, he was not even sure if the other was still inside. He was about to take a look when he suddenly felt a sharp sting in his leg. Surprised and in pain he shouted some curse words, while he tried to get up. The pitchfork fell down when he rolled away and he quickly put his hand over the small stab wound. It wasn’t really that deep, but it did hurt for sure.

And now.. He was standing eye to eye with the man who was most certainly the owner of this stable. He stepped away from him, until he was standing in the corner. He was fully exposed. The tension was making him very uncomfortable and he didn’t feel safe at all. He was an intruder, and he wasn’t sure if the farmer would try to hurt him again or not. His breathing was totally out of control now, and he struggled to find his tongue to speak. He would have to say something, try to explain why he was in his stables at night. But the encounter had made him speechless, so he just stood there and stared at the farmer in silence.

The thought of a thief or anything alike being somewhere here on his farm did give him a ‘fright’. More because one he didn’t want anything stolen! It was his stuff and he had to work very hard to get this far! So it would have been a bummer if he lost it. He did not want to get everything back again… Even though he probably couldn’t lose much, after all how much could a person really take with him? Unless they came with a few…

But seemed he was blessed by the gods this night. After all no soul to be found and… Well one door forced open, but nothing was taken and it seemed that whoever had been here was already gone. Or at least so Vern had thought as he had placed the pitchfork in the hey next to him. Only to be surprised by the sudden sound of shouted out curse words and Vern jumped back in reflex to not only the sound but the sudden movement too. Soon the pitchfork fell to the ground as a shadow in his eyes seemed to roll away from under the hay. Vern tensed up, not for what happened but what might unfold. After all it seemed there now was someone in his stable and he had no idea what he should do. The most proper way would be fighting, hunting the intruder of his land as… Most farmers probably would do with someone who they did not know. But… Then he did not want to fight. But he did not like the feeling of fleeing away either. That was not an option. So he was trapped between two choices.

But as his eyes moved to the form… It seemed there was still a third choice. Vern kept still as he stared surprised to the boy standing in front of him. Looking a bit dumb fold at it all. He tensed up at the movement of the boy… or young man stepping away till he was standing in a corner. It seemed as if he was around the same age as Vern. But what was a young man doing here on his farm!? Hidden away in the hay? His mind slipped from all those questions as his eyes moved to stare down the guy. The tension in the air was tight and well it made it hard to do anything at all. Fearing for what might happen if he even took a breath. But… As soon as he saw how uncomfortable the young man was and how he was covering the wound on his leg… Vern calmed down. Standing up straight and moving his hands up in a defenceless state. Maybe a risky move but… he knew well enough how to defend himself quickly if it did came to a fight. Now… To break the tension, he would just play the go lucky guy he always was. He smiled and pointed to the young man’s leg. ”Now that’s what you get for hiding in someone else’s hay.” He said as he lowered his hands again, even taking a step back.

Hoping the tension would lift as he himself felt more relaxed already… Now came the fact that he actually stabbed the guy. He felt bad as he had not meant to hurt anyone. But how could he have known, it really was the young man’s fault. But… it might be better not to tell that. He looked over the boy again. ”If you were looking for a place to sleep then you should have knocked on my door, I would have given you a fine warm bed.” for people who knew him well those words would have made sense. After all he would do something like that, even for a total stranger. Though he was sure most people would find it unusual. After all who would let a stranger sleep in their bed if it was not a fine woman?

Never had he thought the owner of the farm would come check his stables in the middle of the night. He even had had no idea he was so close to the farmer’s house. It had been dark outside, so he had thought the stables had been further away. The man must have excellent hearing, because Maurr had really tried to be silent. It had also been a while before the farmer had entered the stable. By now he had expected he would be safe. He just wanted to take a quick nap before deciding what exactly he had to do. Go back to his shed, or run further away. Away from Skagen and away from the harbour master. It would be a tough decision, so he wanted to rest for a bit. But now he had to deal with a much more urgent issue. The farmer had stabbed him, probably by accident, but Maurr had given away his position. He didn’t really know what to say or do, so he just waited for the man to take action.

Hopefully he wouldn’t get too mad. The boy could surely take a beating, but if he decided to stab him again, then things could go really wrong. For a while, they just stared at each other in silence. Then the man broke the tension by stepping down. ”Now that’s what you get for hiding in someone else’s hay.” He just said, pointing at his leg. Maurr simply nodded, too shocked to really reply to him. ”If you were looking for a place to sleep then you should have knocked on my door, I would have given you a fine warm bed.” The farmer continued. A surprising concept for the young thrall. ”You would what?” He echoed him, thunderstruck by his words. ”I mean.. I uh.. Nobody would do that”, He explained himself, only to embarras himself further.
