| The training was insanely hard on Gyda who never actually exercised that much, but she was only at the beginning of her journey and she couldn’t give up just yet.
When she was little, her dad was strong enough for her to feel safe even without being able to protect herself, so she didn’t care about learning how to fight properly. But now everything was different. She had a goal and she needed to become stronger to achieve it.
The girl could handle physical training just fine, even if it was exhausting. She was alone and she just needed to learn how to control her own body. Horse riding, on the other hand, was a complete different thing. She needed to interact with another living being and she just couldn’t get used to it.
Gyda knew that she needed to handle difficulties by facing them and her solution to her problem was practicing when no one else was. It was late afternoon and the girl was heading towards the horse stables determined to overcome that obstacle.
Once she entered the stable, she started looking for the horse she usually trained with, but she wasn’t in her usual box. The girl mantained a composed attitude, even though she was screaming on the inside and looked for someone who could help find her horse.
There he was, the stable boy. Gyda cleared her throat to get his attention. “Uhm… There was supposed to be a horse in that box,” she started, pointing towards the direction she came from. “Where is it?” she then concluded, smiling at the guy in front of her.

| Kettil was dragging buckets of water back and forth from the farm towards the horse pasture. There were tasks that were more fun, but he knew that this was part of his job as well, so he didn’t complained. Actually he wasn’t a complainer at all. Or at least not about his job. With Gerolf on the other hand.. A sigh left his mouth as he straightened his legs and pulled up another pair of buckets. His muscles were on fire, and the back of his neck was dark red from the wooden plank that he used to carry the buckets. He had just started to walk when he heard someone scraping his throat. Her throat. It was the redhead. ”Uhm.. There was supposed to be a horse in that box.” She said, pointing towards one of the many stables in the farmhouse. ”Where is it.” Kettil had seen her before at the stables, but never spoken a word with her. He knew she stood higher in rank than he did, so he wouldn’t quickly start a conversation on his own. But now, when she asked him a question, he couldn’t ignore her. So he bowed through his knees again and placed the buckets on the floor. ”Well, she, is grazing in the pasture.” He said with a polite nod. ”Correct me if I am wrong, but I assume you are here for training?” He inhaled and looked at the other horses in the stable. ”Because if so, feel free to pick any horse you like. They all could use some exercise.” He pointed at the other horses in the stable. Of course she knew she couldn’t pick from all of them horses. Everybody knew that the horses from the earl were off-limits. But she would understand what he meant. Or at least that was what he hoped. He waited for her answer, curious if she would be okay to pick another horse than she was used to. He smiled at her just the same as she was smiling at him. |

| The boy’s answer wasn’t what she had expected. She noticed how he emphasized the pronoun referring to the horse and couldn’t help but being annoyed by that little change in his voice. “…I assume you are here for training?” he continued. Oh, so there is something in that little head of yours, I was almost losing hope for you. The girl commented in her mind, without letting any of her thoughts slip out through her expressions. She just nodded at his question, still smiling at him, then tried to let her smile reach her eyes, but only managed to squeeze them a little bit.
He then gave her the news she was expecting. She needed to pick another horse to train with. Amazing. Gyda looked at his expression when he finished his sentence and could definitely sense his challenge. She was a Frú and wasn’t experienced enough to be comfortable with every difficult situation she was given, but probably that was exactly what she needed to grow stronger.
The girl inhaled deeply and nodded reclutantly, shutting her eyes for a brief moment. She then turned around and went back on her steps without a word, hoping that somehow he could sense her uneasiness without her voicing her problems and would help her somehow. After all, she was still counting on her outer appearence, knowing that in a way or another, she would’ve been able to appeal anyone.

| The young frú just stood there, observing him silently as he spoke. Kettil couldn’t help himself from turning another, friendly smile on his face. He was charming, polite and a true gentlemen. But he also loved to play this little I am friendly, but also silently testing you-game. When he was among his horses he was able to be his true self, and a totally different man that he would be if his brother was also with them. But luckily that wasn’t the case. Kettil loves Gerolf, in a strange way, and almost as equal much as he hated him. He blinked with his dark brown eyes a few times, waiting for a respond from the girl. But there came none, except from a slightly disappointed nod, hidden beneath a fake smile. Kettil was good at reading people, just as he was good at reading animals. It was some kind of privilege he had since the day he was born. That, and the power to calm down most of the people around them with that warm vibe of his. He heard her inhale deeply before she turned her body around and started to walk away. Kettil rolled his eyes in their sockets in a fun way and pushed his body forward. With a few jog-steps he had gained in on her. ”You want me to fetch your mare?” He asked and started to walk in front of her, backwards. His steps were firm and confident. This was his kingdom. ”The only thing you need to do is ask. Or command if that suits you better.” With a broad smile on his face he looked at her and came to a halt, almost forcing her to do the same because he stopped right in front of her. Kettil spreaded his arms and took a deep breath, the exact same as she had taken before. ”After all I am just the stable boy and you are the one wielding the weapon.” He started to laugh, softly. And then he became silent. It was so unfair, even though he loved his horses from the deepest of his heart. |

| Gyda heard the boy's steps behind her and grinned. Jackpot. Then he was walking backwards in front of her and talked to her with a charming confidence she never saw in him. Gyda would see him often when she would come to the stables to get her horse for her trainings, but she always saw him like a quiet guy, always doing his work and minding his own business. That guy in front of her though, looked like a different person. His movements, his words, everything about him screamed confidence and Gyda felt a bit intimidated by him.
"The only thing you need to do is ask." The redhead furrowed her forhead and raised her left eyebrow when the boy finished his sentence: "...Or command if that suits you better." For the second time, he emphasized his tone over some specific words, only irritating Gyda again. The girl grinded her teeth and exhaled sharply from her nose, but managed to stay calm on the outside, not screaming at his face.
He stopped his walk so unexpectedly, that Gyda couldn't help but bump slightly on his chest. She immediately took a step back and locked her eyes with the boy's ones. He was... cute maybe. Her eyes then wandered along his body. "Yup, he is also short." The girl shaked her head at her own thoughts, trying not to laugh in his face because of them and raised her gaze once again, to focus on his last words. Another sharp breath came out of her mouth as a reaction to his laugh and her thoughts wandered again. "He has a nice smile." she realised before gaining her dignity back and nodding at his "suggestion". "Yes please, do so." She finally stated, spreading her arms before letting them rest at her sides and smacking her thighs lightly. She then moved to the side, to let him move freely.

| This was his natural habitat. The place he felt really home. So it wasn’t strange, that he felt more confident than he’d feel in any other situation. He even dared to speak at her freely, offer him his help in the only thing he was good at. But when he suddenly stopped, he hadn’t expect her to bump into him. Only briefly, but he felt it. Even though Kettil could have expected it in advance, it felt kind of strange when it did happen. So when the girl took a step back and looked at him slightly irritated, he did not know how to respond. His confidence had disappeared like snow for the sun and the only thing he could do was stare at her. Staring with this slightly awkward feeling in the back of his head. This was not what he had meant, and when he felt the judgmental glance of the girl over his body, he became the one who felt intimidated by her. He saw her eyes glide all over his body, and he could see the shimmering in her eyes. If only he knew what she was thinking. So while he stood there, thinking about what was going on in the girl’s head, he couldn’t help himself from frowning his forehead. But then the girl nodded at him, accepting his offer. ”Yes please, do so.” Kettil knew that he could not reject it anymore. So he turned away his eyes from her and took a deep breath trying to focus. ”Allright.” He said with a little nod as he looked back at her. On his lips he tried to conjure a smile, but it was very clearly that it wasn’t sincere. The only thing he could think about, was what the girl would be thinking of him. Her opinion -and the opinion of everyone- meant so much to him, that he even forgot that he was so much older than her, and that she should respect him just the same as he should respect her. Or that she at least had to be nice to him. The girl moved to the side, making space for him to pass by. As he did, he stared her straight into the eyes, only releasing them when the distance between the both of them became too wide. He shook his head and clenched his fists as he walked to the pasture. How was a little girl like her able to mess with his head so much? Without even saying a decent sentence? With more force than needed he pressed open the fence, making it cracking in its hinges. ”Inkeri.” He shouted, and he saw the horses on the other side of the field raising their heads. Kettil brought two fingers to his mouth and whistled, a high, sharp tone that would make dogs cry out loud. Within the minute the horses in the pasture came storming towards him, bucking and bolting as they did so. With a soft whoa he calmed them down, gently petting the ones that came to say ‘hello’. ”Here girl.” He whispered, and grabbed the seal brown mare by the manes. Willingly she stepped aside him as he left the pasture, leaving the other horses behind. Kettil grabbed a rope that hung over the pasture fence and knotted a halter from it which he shoved around Inkeri’s head. ”Anything else?” He asked with a lowered voice when he eventually handed over the mare to the redhead. |

| She could feel the uneasiness in the stable boy's movements. She could feel her glances almost burning him alive and could hear his brain working, probably trying to understand what the girl was thinking. Finally she felt like she gained power over him once again and relaxed. It was like she somehow gained confidence in herself from the other's weakness, and this stable boy was giving her everything she needed in that moment to be mentally stronger than him.
The boy finally confirmed his willingness to help her and went past the girl when she moved aside. Her eyes were firm in his when he smiled falsely at her. Gyda perfectly copied his expression before following him outside, staying just a few steps behind and observing every movement he made. His fists clenched and Gyda's mouth curved in a satisfied and mean grin.
He then shouted and brought her back on earth again. The girl shook her head and cleared her throat slightly, focusing on the boy once again. Gyda's eyes widened when she noticed how the boy's attitude changed and was now more comfortable and confident. While she was a complete mess with horses, he was in his own element and he definitely knew how to move in it.
Gyda blinked a few times before being able to return to her senses and grab the rope the boy was lending to her. "I'm screwed." She thought, biting her tongue, trying to avoid to make her uneasiness clear once again. Just a moment before, she was so confident in herself, but now that she had to rely on something other than herself, she felt powerless again. She was there to improve her horse riding skills, but she didn't expect anyone to be there, she didn't expect anyone watching her. "Anything else?" The boy's voice cut her wire of confused thoughts. "N-no!" The word escaped loudly from her mouth before she could stop it, ruining the image she tried to show until now. Gyda cleared her throat with her hand covering her mouth and once she gained her composure back, she gazed into his eyes, piercing trough them. "No." She said again, with a lower and controlled voice. "That's all. Thank you." Gyda concluded, before trying to go past him and head outside without dying from embarrassment in front of this guy, whatever his name was. |

| Kettil watched her body language closely as he handed over Inkeri to the girl. He thought he could see her hand shaking as she took over the rope, but who was he to judge? He had been uncomfortable around horses too.. had he? He started to doubt it, and tried to think about his first memories he had with horses. He remembered sneaking of into the stables, climbing the wooden pillars and getting on the back of one of the draft horses. Gentle beasts, they were, but were able to crunch him without them even knowing. He’d spent there hours, just laying on the back of the gentle giants, practicing the knots his father had learnt him. Just until his mother came in, a face full of panic because she couldn’t find him for hours. He remembered her forbidding him to do things like that again. Just as he remembered himself disobeying her, and doing it all the same over again. Just until she gave up and allowed him to hand with the horses. There was nobody in the world who was able to separate him from his animals. Not even Gerolf. Kettil thought it polite to ask her if she needed something else. But the undertone in his voice gave away that it was just to nag her a bit. And it seemed to work. ”N-no!” Kettil pressed his lips onto eachother, trying to hide a smile that tried to come through. ”No.” she said again, this time more certain of herself. Or at least she tried to be. Again Kettil nodded and crossed his arms before his chest. ”That’s all. Thank you.” The girl started to move, trying to get the mare to follow her. ”Anytime.” Kettil said enthusiast and looked at the mare skittish following Gyda. ”But please do not try to get yourself hurt.” Kettil shouted softly. ”Or the horse..” And then he just couldn’t hold back the laughter that had been hiding in his throat all that time. |

| His eyes felt like they were literally burning her skin as the girl took the rope in her shaky hands. There weren’t any chances that he didn’t notice her hands trembling, it was too clear. Once again, embarrassment flashed through her cheeks that took a reddish color.
Gyda took a deep breath with her eyes closed. The only thing she could think of was how hard was to rely on others than her. She only trusted her father and relied a lot on him and he died because of her. From that moment onwards she had always been by herself and she learned how to only trust herself. Maybe she didn’t want to rely on others too much because she was afraid they could end up leaving her alone or worse, end up like her father. That’s why she rather only trust herself.
Shaking off her thoughts from her head, she started walking outside the stable trying to carry the horse that apparently didn’t want to cooperate with her. ”Anytime.” The man said with an enthusiast voice tone. Gyda literally tried her best not to turn around, leave the horse there and just run away. ”But please do not try to get yourself hurt.” He added, followed by ”Or the horse…” and a laugh. Right, he was now laughing at her.
Gyda suddenly stopped walking and turned around with a straight and serious face. She inhaled deeply and then just spitted out the question. ”Can you please teach me?” She said, pointing at the horse with her head. The girl honestly couldn’t even believe she was asking him to help her after all that she did to run as far away from him she could. Maybe she still relied on others afterall. |

| Kettil observed her as she tried to walk away from him, with the horse on the other end of the rope she was holding. Inkeri was a gentle and patient mare, but incredible sensitive. If you wanted her to be calm around you, you had to be calm yourself. And that was not exactly what was happening. The mare started to toddle, and Kettil could clearly hear her snorting from where he was standing. And thet was the exact same moment he stopped smiling. Over time he had learnt when a situation was turning into something potential dangerous. The last thing he wanted was for her to really get hurt. It had only been a joke, to get back at her haughty behavior from before. So at the same time the girl turned around, he had also started walking towards her. ”Can you please teach me?” She asked him. Kettil almost felt sorry for her, as he saw her hands shaking and heard her voice on the point of breaking. ”Ofcourse.” He said with a gentle, sincere smile and a soft undertone in his voice. He had reached the both of them, and immediately took over the rope from the girl. ”Try to get calm first.” He said softly towards Gyda, and let his hand glide over the neck of Inkeri. ”Just walk upon the fence, take a deep breath and when you are ready, you return to me. Okay?” Kettil watched the redhead as she did so, and at the same time felt the mare loosen up again next to him. When Gyda returned, he nodded in approval. ”Let’s take a fresh start. But before we can do so, you need to get that mask of your face.” He raised the corner of his mouth and tilted his head a little. ”This is Inkeri, one of our eldest mares. She has seen many battles, carried men on her back that are now long lost and forgotten.” His hand went over her nose, and the mare took a step forward towards him. ”One of the most honest horses I have ever worked with. She has been through so much, but has always stayed true to herself and her rider.” Kettil gestured that Gyda had to take a step closer. ”So you have to be honest to her too, you understand? Do not try to be someone you are not, or she will not be able to rely on you when the time is right.” He inhaled deeply and pulled the rope gently in Gyda’s direction, so the mare turned around a little bit. Her head was facing towards Gyda, but it was visible that she was cautious. ”Go ahead. Get to know her.” |

| She couldn’t believe she was really asking someone else to help her. At first she thought she could use him as she did with most of the people she met, but her uneasiness was too evident to keep showing her strong mask, her strong self. In the end she chose to show that her mask wasn’t exactly perfect, it had cracks in it. By the time she turned around, the boy was already walking towards her direction and that made her even more uncomfortable. She knew she had to do it, otherwise she was probably going to get hurt.
His smile and voice tone when he replied to her question looked soft and sincere, Gyda felt a little relieved because his attitude was completely the opposite of what it had been until now. The girl really felt that his intentions were good and he was honestly willing to help her. He started taking the rope she was holding in her shaky hands, which immediately fell on her sides. The boy then instructed her to keep calm. That was a difficult task he gave her, but she knew it had to be done. Gyda walked towards the fence, as he suggested. She walked slowly and started counting her long and deep breaths. She already trusted someone in her life but never did it again after what happened the first time. Now she had to do it again, but this time, she had to trust a horse. ”It should be easier.” She said to herself.
Once she headed back, the boy immediately spoke. ”Let’s take a fresh start. But before we can do so, you need to get that mask of your face.” Gyda froze at those words. Taking off her mask meant to show him his deepest flaws, his deepest fears. She wasn’t ready. Before she could seriously panic the boy started to explain why she had to be real. It wasn’t towards him, but towards the horse. He explained that the mare could sense her uneasiness and that she didn’t like it. Gyda was listening to the boy’s words closely, but her gaze was focused on the animal in front of her. ”...Do not try to be someone you are not, or she will not be able to rely on you when the time is right.” He was right. The redhead was only thinking about her need to rely on the horse, but with her attitude, she was making it impossible for the horse to trust her.
Finally her eyes moved again towards the boy when he handed the rope to her once again. ”Go ahead. Get to know her.” Was it already fine for her to take her back? This time the horse didn’t really look calm when he handed the rope, but Gyda was. Her hands weren’t really shaking anymore and she grabbed the rope firmly but gently at the same time. The girl tried to ignore the presence of the stable boy next to them. It was also because of him if she was nervous before. She was afraid to be judged, but finally realised that if she wanted to learn new things, she had to go through times where those things weren’t easy to do, she had to make mistakes and had to accept the fact that others would judge her for not being good enough. Gyda took a few seconds before raising her free hand to stroke Inkeri’s neck. It wasn’t like she hadn’t touched a horse before, but this was a whole new level of dealing with them. The horse was a bit reluctant at first, but eventually leaned in to the touch of the girl. Her face brightened up and a smile formed on her lips without her even knowing. |
