| Days before, Freyja told her sisters that they were supposed to pay a visit to one of the blacksmiths of the village because he had something he wanted to give to each one of them. While her sister was talking, she wasn’t really paying attention, being too focused on the flower she was sewing on the dress she was making for herself. After Sofie’s visit at her mother’s shop and after helping her, though, she had a reason to finally head over to this boy named Hakon’s place and see if whatever he was willing to give her could’ve helped her with her training with Sofie.
It was pretty early in the afternoon, a time where Kara was at the shop by herself and Visna knew that not many customers were supposed to pay a visit to them anytime soon. She was working on a nice cloak for a man, usually those were three times bigger than women’s so it was harder because they were also heavier. Visna told her mother she was taking a little break from her work and of course Kara didn’t complain about her leaving the shop. Luckily for her, her mother never really forced her to stay at the shop when she didn’t want to and she was really free to come and go whenever she wanted.
The blacksmith’s place wasn’t too far from her shop, but Visna took a bit of time to enjoy her little walk and her free time. Eventually, she arrived where Sofie told her Hakon’s shop was and she felt a little awkward just looking at the place. It didn’t look nice from the outside, and once she entered, the things were even worse. It was too hot in there, dirty tools were laying pretty much everywhere around her and she couldn’t help but think about the differences with her mother’s shop. She held back a disgusted expression and just put a polite mask on her face. ”Uhm… Hello, I’m looking for Hakon.” She said with a polite tone in her voice. ”My name is Visna. I’m one of Freyja’s sisters." She then introduced herself with a smile to the man in front of her, which also was the only person in the shop. |

| Hakon was working with a bronze brooch today, and bronze was interesting because you couldn't quench it like you could quench steel. Quenching would make it brittle. Bronze had to be strengthened by stress. The bronze had cooled, because you couldn't stress-harden it while it was still hot, or it would deform. He was sitting at his worktable, holding the small brooch in place, and gently tapping it with one of his smaller hammers. It was rhythmic, mindless work, easy to do but necessary. Besides, he had a plan for this little brooch. At the celebration for her mother's birthday, Freyja had suggested he could partner up with her mother and Visna. He could make small decorative pieces--which he didn't get to make often, and he liked to do all kinds of forging, so he liked the idea. And they could pair his work with some dresses or cloaks they were making. He could sell his work to them at a low price, so they could raise it enough to make a profit from it. After all, they would be doing the work of selling. He forged for the love of it, and sometimes he enjoyed a break from making weapons.
He looks up as the door to his shop opens, a small smile tilting up the corners of his mouth, and he's its down his hammer and the brooch and walks over to the counter. He can see her looking around, and something about her looks vaguely familiar but he can't quite place her. His smile widens as she speaks, and he nods. "I'm Hakon." He tilts his head, considering her for a moment. It must be the resemblance to her sisters that makes her look familiar to him, because he knows he hasn't met her yet. He walks over to a shelf near the door where a row of knives are on display. He grabs one, testing the grip of it in his hand, and purses his lips in thought. He grabs another, this one with a slimmer handle, and holds both out to her. "Whichever of these feels better in your hand is for you." After she takes the knives, he walks back to his worktable and picks up the small bronze brooch he'd been working on. He walks back over to Visna, holding his hand out. The brooch rests in his palm.
"At the celebration for your mother's birthday, Freyja mentioned I should talk to you about something. I don't often get the chance to make pieces like this, usually just weapons or ship fittings. I could use the practice. If you and your mother wanted to sell pieces like this with your dresses, I would sell the to you cheaply so you could raise the price enough to make a profit on them." He sets the brooch down on the counter and shrugs. It's small and delicate, a twisting piece of knot work to fasten a cloak closed. He shrugs, looking back up at Visna. "You do not need to, of course. I will not be offended." He offers her a small, easy smile. He's a bit gruff, it's true, but it's something he's working on. A frowning blacksmith is bad for business. |

| The ambience in the shop wasn’t exactly welcoming. Visna couldn’t help but make comparisons between this shop and her mother’s, which was far more colourful, less… grey. She was looking around, trying extremely hard not to make any comment on the shop’s appearance out loud. The only man that was in the room, got up, leaving his working table and getting closer to the counter. Her attention moved from the shop to him automatically and she couldn’t help but look at his muscular and tall figure. ”How come my sister knows so many hot men?” She asked to herself in her mind, a little salty.
The girl introduced herself and asked for the name her sister told her, only to learn that the man in front of her was actually who she was looking for. ”Lucky.” She thought, holding back a stupid giggle and a smirk, trying to stay as serious as possible and also trying to ignore her inappropriate thoughts. Well, he was old anyway. Hakon then moved around the shop to reach a shelf. She couldn’t see clearly what he was taking from that shelf, but luckily for her, since curiosity was basically killing her, he soon came back with two little knives in his hands. "Whichever of these feels better in your hand is for you." The man said handing her the two weapons. Visna smiled politely at him, taking both knives in her hands. She didn’t understand much about those things actually, so she chose to follow his suggestion and just try to understand which one she felt better in her own hands.
Visna was focused on the knives, since she finally had a chance to have a real weapon to train with. Finally she could learn how to defend herself without using a kitchen knife but a real one that a real blacksmith was now gifting her. The girl couldn’t really understand why he was doing that, but she was really thankful. ”At the celebration for your mother's birthday, Freyja mentioned I should talk to you about something.” His voice woke her up from her daydreaming and she shook her head before focusing on him and his words once again. ”I don't often get the chance to make pieces like this, usually just weapons or ship fittings. I could use the practice. If you and your mother wanted to sell pieces like this with your dresses, I would sell the to you cheaply so you could raise the price enough to make a profit on them." She saw him putting a small bronze brooch on the counter between the two of them and a little smile grow on her face. The girl put down both knives on the counter and took the brooch to look closer at it. She didn’t really expect him to talk about business, it was the first time they met and she honestly thought she only had to grab her gift and go away, so that was a pleasant surprise. ”It’s pretty” She whispered, her smile impossible to leave her mouth. Her mind was already working on how she could use that little piece of metal on one of her creations. ”I didn’t know you could also make nice things in here.” She said out loud a little lost in thought. Only after few seconds she realised that she could’ve said something rude. Her smile faded away as she glanced at him, an apologetic expression on her face. ”I’m… I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to…” She was stumbling on her words, unable to complete a sentence. ”Of course you make nice things in here! It’s just… Maybe not..." She stopped again mid-phrase, her cheeks were bright red. ”It’s pretty.” She repeated again, finally shutting her mouth. |

| Hakon could see her looking around, and he knows his shop isn't exactly welcoming and pretty to the eye. Everything about it is purely functional, but it's meticulously organized, and it's his own, and he loves it. He doesn't mind her judgment because he knows his shop is very different from what she's used to. He hands her the knives and watches her for a moment as she tests the two of them in her hands, and he wonders briefly which one she'll choose. He'd initially intended the one with the thicker handle for her, since it was a slightly weightier weapon and would do more damage should she need it, but her hands were small and delicate and he worried the handle might be uncomfortable for her. The other knife had a slimmer handle and was a bit smaller overall, slender and razor-sharp, with a wicked point on it that would cut flesh as easily as butter. It would probably be better suited for her, but he decided to let her choose. She might surprise him and pick the bigger knife.
He sets the brooch between them on the counter and watches the top of her head as she leans forward to inspect it, and a small smile grows on his face as she tells him that its pretty. She looks up and he sees the smile on her face, and knows this is a business partnership that will probably be successful. He makes a note to thank Freyja for her suggestion. Her next words shock him for just an instant before he begins chuckling, waving away her awkward, stammering attempts at an apology. He only raises his eyebrows. "Can you teach Sofie your good manners?" His tone is light and joking, an attempt at easing her embarrassment, a small joke to show she hasn't offended him at all. He nods in thanks as she again tells him it's pretty, and her cheeks are red as she stops speaking. He smiles easily at her. "Thank you. I don't get the change to make things like it very often, but I like improving my craft. I would appreciate the chance to make more things like this, if you want to pair them with your dresses. This one is finished, you can take it with you if you want? As a trial piece, perhaps? If you're happy with it, we can make an agreement sometime later." |

| Visna was able to change the direction of her thoughts only once she had those knives in her hands. They were pretty different from each other and the girl simply couldn’t tell why they were like that. Once again, she compared those items with what she was used to craft herself. Maybe as she loved to make different looking dresses, those knives were different because he himself liked to be creative with his work? Then again, why the difference in the size? Was it because they were supposed to be used for different purposes? As a cloak was different from a gown or a pair of pants, maybe those knives were the same. It was just little less obvious to the girl’s eye. Maybe she could’ve given this man and his shop a chance. They were both artisans, both crafting great items, probably both of them, moved from the same passion they had for their own job.
The man surprised her once again when he showed her a little brooch made of bronze and then suggested she could’ve used that small precious item to decorate her dresses. She was so in awe that couldn’t stop her words from coming out of her mouth. Even when she told him that was one nice thing he made, as if everything else he made wasn’t nice or well made. With her cheeks flushed red from embarrassment, she tried to apologise the best she could, stumbling on her own words. ”Can you teach Sofie your good manners?" The man said once she shut her mouth. His tone was light and his expression didn’t look angry at all. Was Sofie much worse than her when she came by before Visna did? The girl smiled kindly at him, as to thank him silently for not getting offended. ”I will see if I can work on it.” She said in response to what he said, then a giggle left her throat. Of course she couldn’t even think about teaching Sofie something other than how to sew a dress and only because her sister asked her to do so in the first place.
His smile grew once again on his lips when she repeated that the brooch was pretty. She really meant it and wanted him to know that. "Thank you. I don't get the change to make things like it very often, but I like improving my craft. I would appreciate the chance to make more things like this, if you want to pair them with your dresses. That was actually a great idea. Only looking at the brooch, gave the girl fresh inspiration for her dresses, and that was exactly what she needed since she wanted to sew a new dress for each one of her sisters, for them to wear those at their mother’s wedding. ”This one is finished, you can take it with you if you want? As a trial piece, perhaps? If you're happy with it, we can make an agreement sometime later." Her eyes went to the man once again when he told her she was allowed to take the little item with her. She smiled brightly at him and nodded, knowing exactly what to do with that piece now. ”Thank you so much! I’m sure they will give our dresses a nice touch.” She said, looking back to the brooch once again. That was surely going to decorate Freyja’s dress. It was the dress she was working on at the moment and she knew that would’ve been a great addition to it.
The girl looked back at the knives she had left on the counter before, than back at the man. She was really uncertain about what to do with them, so she chose to ask him instead of doing everything by herself, without thinking it thoroughly. ”Uhm… Which one do you think I should take?” She asked him, pointing at the knives. She could’ve just trust her instinct, but having the opinion of someone who knew a lot more than her on the matter was safer to her. Hopefully she didn’t have to use a knife to hurt someone in the future, but it was important to know as much as she could learn. |
