PostSubject: The brightness in the dark [Sithric] The brightness in the dark [Sithric] EmptyThu Mar 29, 2018 9:01 pm

There's a little bit of devil in the way she looks

She had quite some things on her plate lately, if it wasn’t her husband who still wasn’t nowhere to be found then it was her son that slowly got challenged for his rightful place as an earl. And it if wasn’t that it was the wolf problem, the killed sheep, the people looking at her for she was a widow … in a way. Gunnvor changed a lot over the weeks without Rigas, not necessary for the better. It were only a few faces, like Freyr and Steinar, who saw the worst of her. Others got the same distinct stern look, the look of a leader, the look of an earl … because that was she needed to be, an earl. She didn’t know how long, she didn’t know anything on this moment. The only thing she knew was that the things she already lost in her life was slowly tearing her apart.

Steinar knew her position more than anything else, for that he took a big part of the tasks upon himself, supporting Gunnvor in leading Skagerrak. Just as every morning this one wasn’t any different, people coming into the great hall to lay down their problems. She was desperately in need of some good news, something to set her mind of things. Her distinct green eyes went to one of her shield maidens, walking in before bowing. Gunnvor gave her a short nod back and the woman started to speak. ‘A trading group just arrived out of Kattegat, sadly now word from your husband my countess.’ She announced respectfully. Gunnvor pushed herself up, her green dress following the slightest movements of her slim body. ‘I expected nothing else.’ She just said, waving her fingers outside and they all did except for Steinar. She ignored the look on his face and turned to the table of food standing against the wall. She walked over, pouring herself a cup while taking some fruit, gazing into the reflexion of a plate to her rather tired face. The burden of being a single ruler, a compassionate ruler started to weight down on her. As she heard footsteps she turned around with her cupping, already forming the words that she didn’t wanted to be disturbed until she saw who was walking in.

For a second everything went in slow motion, the cup slipped out of her hand as she looked to the face she would recognize everywhere. Every year he came, until three years ago, then it stopped and she thought the worst. ‘Sithric?’ Her voice on the edge of a crack, a whisper as she looked to that fine looking man, a man that supported her claim to Skagen as nobody else, who risked his life every year by coming to visit her. Talked about something positive ...

A clever head no longer plots.
With a ruse he created Sithric was now on his way to Skaggerak. The man talked to Haskell a few nights before stating that a relative of him became sick and he needed to tend to their needs. An idea that he had tought off while talking to his brother, he just needed to get away from Skagen. He had been in the city for far to long now. The moment that Ylva here family was slaughtered and she herself was no where to be found made him even more certain to go. It was the young Maurr who told him that she was taken by boat to some place. So off course he had to go looking for Ylva, but he also needed to talk to someone in particular. Someone he had not seen for years. A thing he chose for himself. It wasn’t safe for him to go to different villages, not since Halfdan was acquiring more and more of his services. Big things where coming up, that was certain. So yesterday he had set sail under the watchful eye of Haskell. A few of the other villagers where a little suspicious but they didn’t make a fuss about it, they just attended there own business.

Waves slammed into the ship, Sithric had taken one of the smaller boats. Mainly because he didn’t want many people to come with him, for his own safety most of all. The ship still demanded at least five other persons with him excluded. It was a pretty harsh trip, they had been sailing straight for a little les then a day. The weather conditions weren’t soothing either. It was raining with strong wind slamming against the ship and the sails causing the ship to rock pretty hard. Not that this kind of weather freighted him, it was better than being stuck in an open ocean with no wind at all. But still these conditions took his toll on the crew, also on him. The man wasn’t feeling a hundred percent, but they had to stick through. They couldn’t just sit around an do nothing, that would probably mean their dead if they did so. Each and every person standing on the deck took his turn to either secure the sail or steering them in the right direction. The last time he had sailed towards Skaggerak it was under better circumstances, but this time it was more important. Some shouting made Sithric turn his head towards his men. “Land ahead!” One shouted clearly while punching another one against the shoulder. A grin appeared on his face. ‘Finally, I was almost worried.’ He scoffed. A few of the men laughed. As if he would ever lose direction? Maybe, if he was on the verge of dying but now? Not ever. As long as the journey had taken, they stood on solid earth again fast enough. The other guys immediately took off, while he stayed behind to secure his ship. Out of the corner of his eye he spotted a shield maiden running up to the manor again. Probably to announce his arrival, no surprising today.

For a moment he had to adjust to the dark ground he was standing on. The toll of not travelling for such a long while. He scanned the village, something seemed off. He couldn’t quite put his finger on it, but Skaggerak seemed different. A frown appeared on his forehead, he needed to find Gunnvor right away. He knew he wasn’t looking to shabby since his hair was a total disaster from al the wind, and he certainly didn’t smell to great either. But he could not afford to lose more time. Sithric didn’t formerly introduce himself to the shield-maiden standing next to the doors, he just walked in like he was walking into his own home. For a few seconds he needed to adjust to the lightning inside, but the first thing he noticed was that Gunnvor was standing alone in the main hall. He walked up to her, and after he heard his name rolling over her lips he put his arms around her for a moment. ‘I missed you loads.’ The sound of his voice was nothing more than a whisper, you could definitely hear he was worn out from the trip. ‘You probably thought you had seen the last of me?’ He grinned while he let go of her and took a step back.
thank you Sarah!

There's a little bit of devil in the way she looks

The day somebody would come through those doors with some good news got smaller every day that passed. Gunnvor normally wasn’t so negative in looking over her life but things could change. Looking to Freyr made her realize how fast the things could go, how fast things could change. If she wasn’t careful he would sit sooner on that throne then she realized. And for what? Because he father was nowhere to be found? Somewhere in her heart she didn’t want to believe it, Rigas death … he was stronger than that. But what else reason would there be for his absence on the throne. And with time that hope slimmed down, until it was a little spark of light in the corner of her heart, suppressing all the darkness lurking down to it. It wasn’t fair, not even the gods answered her prayers.

Or maybe they did as they leaded a person into her great hall from which she thought he died to. Sithric was and would always be one of her closest friends, family almost. There weren’t much people out of Skagen supporting her claim to the throne in this way. Beside Steinar who advised her day in and out Sithric risked his life day in and out, being a spy on Skagen soil. It was three years ago see saw him for the last time, a man remembering her where she truly belonged. In the absence of Rigas she thought about it often, going back. But Freyr kept her here. Maybe the arrival of Sithric would bring some good news.

Her distinct green eyes looked at him, partly in shock and for a part in relief for him standing there, breathing and well alive. By the look of his hair and his slightly tired face he had to be sailing for quite a bit. But it hardly mattered as her shock made place for a certain happiness. A weak smile broke open on her face, confused by her own emotions she let him hug her and it felt good. For once something like this felt good. She let her head rest against his shoulder, a smile even widening more as he whispered before pulling back. ‘Yes.’ She answered his question honestly, looking over his body as if she was searching for something that could explain his absence for over three years. ‘It’s so good to welcome you again.’ She nodded, looking shortly over to Steinar who smiled, bowing before walking outside to give them both some time. Gunnvor gestured over to the table with ale and good food, still looking at him like he was a ghost. ‘I was asking the gods for some good news, you being here certainly does something. Why did it took you so long Sithric?’ She asked, in a way a little worried. She didn’t heard rumors out of Skagen, she didn’t knew a thing. Who knows what happened in the last couple of years.
