| Tons of water, pouring into the depths from the little lake that was beneath the waterfall. The sound of the rushing water made a smile appear on Kettils face. Yesterday the moon was on its highest point, what meant that he and all the other farmers and slaves were given a day of. Once each month they were free to do as they pleased, to fill in their day with activities they wanted and not being commanded around. His foots broke little twigs in two as he searched his path through the forest. It wasn’t for everybody to come here, most of them would got lost. But Kettil had grown up in these forests and knew them as the palm of his hand. A soft, statisfied sigh came out of his mouth as he stepped through the bushes and saw the waterfall dooming up in the distance. With soft laughter he started to run towards the lake beneath the waterfall, undressing himself as he did so. His clothes formed a path towards the water, starting from the bushed he just had come out. The chance that he would meet someone here was nearly non-existing, the waterfall was a place he visited once a month already for a couple of years and never he had met somebody there. So why worrying?
In his total bareness he jumped in the water, felt the cold water on his skin as a kiss from Skaði herself. Kettil dove under and eventually came back to surface while stroking his black hair backwards. He swam towards the waterfall, only to feel the pressure of the water on his shoulders as he stood beneath it. Because of the sound of the water, he didn’t hear the cracking from the bushes around him…

| Gerolf had known that today was a special day for his younger brother. It was the one day a month that Kettil had absolutely nothing to do on the farm, sure his brother had other days that weren't as busy. For he tired to best to help when he was home, but today was different. Today dear Kettil was completely free. Gerolf had gotten up early today to train and keep him self in top shape for the next raid, when he saw his brother sneak off somewhere. To say he was curious as to where is brother was going would be an understatement. Kettle hadn't told him he was leaving anywhere special. So Gerolf decided to fallow his brother to see just where he wanted to go and spend his time off. He fallowed him all the way to the waterfall. Making sure to do his best to be quite. He didn't want Kettil to know he was following just yet. Just in case his little brother was meeting someone here. He wouldn't want to be seen spying on him. Gerolf watched as Kettil slowly started pealing his clothes off and run toward the waterfall. Gerolf had no idea that Kettil liked to come here, but from the looks of it he came here often enough that he wasn't scared of being caught naked and unarmed. Part of this made Gerolf angry, that his brother thought it was safe to do something like this and not be able to protect himself, not that Gerolf would let Kettil learn to fight. No he would rather protect his brother, and keep him safe then to have Kettil becoming a good fighter. If he joined the Vikings he would see how his older bother really was, and Gerolf just wasn't going to let that happen. He needed one person in his life that didn't know how evil he was. He didn't know about his bloodlust. Kettil had no idea the monster that his brother truly was, and he never would if he had his way. Even though he was very aware that Kettil wanted to learn to fight, he would just keep manipulating him into thinking it wasn't a good idea, that staying here on the farm was what was best for him. Once Kettil was standing under the waterfall Gerolf decided he should might as well join his brother. He had wasted his time in coming all the way out here anyways. Stripping down he made sure to keep the knifes had strapped to himself on. That way if someone else were to try and sneak up on the two of them, he would be able to protect Kettil and himself. Only a fool would try to attack him however, most of the village knew he would kill anyone who would try anything without a second thought. Getting into the water Gerolf did his best to be as quite as he could be before he snuck up on Kettil, pulling a knife and putting it to his throat very loosely. To simply scare his brother, but to never hurt him. " Do you find it wise to be naked and unarmed little brother?" he asked with a small laugh. " For someone other than myself could have just as easily snuck up on you" He said next before removing the knife and putting it away.He knew that Kettil was going to be very mad at him, but he was just having a little fun. |

| After helping train some of the younger warriors in the morning, Yrsa had wandered off on her own. It was a regular occurrence, as the shield maiden was never content to sit around and do nothing. Unable to find anyone doing something interesting, she’d sent a wave to her parents and headed to the woods.
She was excited, imagining what she could discover today. Last weekend, she’d come across a litter of kittens. Obviously she’d taken the whole litter with her, fed them, and most had already been taken home by the village children. The time before that, she’d seen what she believed to be a wild horse. One day she’d catch it and tame it, Yrsa told herself. Maybe today was that day?
After a few hours, the sound of rushing water reached her, and she changed directions, wondering how she hadn’t stumbled upon such a thing before. When she finally found the source, she was captivated by the sight. It wasn’t just a river, it was a waterfall! It was beautiful.
The brunette started to walk closer to get a better look, but stopped short when she heard a voice. Her hand immediately went to the knife at her hip, unsheathing it and holding it tightly in her fist as she crouched, and inched forward slowly.
Peeking through the bushes hiding her from view, she spotted two figures, and after a moment, finally recognized the men in front of her. She decided not to put the knife away, but loosened her grip, slightly less worried about the situation at hand. It wouldn’t be smart to startle the pair of brothers, given Gerolf’s well-earned reputation. But she wasn’t so worried about him that she was going to leave without making her presence known. It wasn’t like she was spying on them, or anything. And the water looked pleasant enough to swim in.
Yrsa hadn’t heard what Gerolf said to his brother, or if Kettil said anything in reply; She wasn’t near enough, and the sound of the water had made it hard to make out the actual words. After a few minutes of trying and failing to eavesdrop, and make sure it wasn’t a very serious conversation they were having, Yrsa shrugged to herself, and waded into the lake, making sure to splash around quite a bit.
“Oh, I didn’t see you two there. Mind some company?” She asked with a grin, not waiting for their reply before shrugging out of her outer clothes. She didn’t dress down completely, not wanting to give either of them the wrong sort of idea. Yrsa wasn’t about that life. Sorry, boys.
She dove underwater and came back up quickly, swimming closer to the waterfall, but giving the pair of brothers a wide berth. She wanted to give them space to continue their conversation, and still hadn’t quite been able to gauge the elder brother’s mood. She was here to have a bit of fun, not get into a fight. |

| The water left a heavy feeling on his shoulders, just as it left a cold trail on his bare skin. Kettil closed his eyes, looked up to the waterfall and felt the water cleaning his face. With his hands he went through his black, curly hair that was almost twice as long when wet. Even though it was only a month ago since he had been here for the last time, it felt like an eternity. The feeling of freedom, to do whatever he wanted without anyone commanding him around.. In many ways he was jealous on his older brother. He was free to do as he pleased, he was skilled, well trained and people feared and respected him. And who was he, except from some kind of stable boy? Kettil stepped from beneath the waterfall, felt the cold air stroking over his wet upper body. He stroke with his fingers through his eyes, and then.. he felt a cold blade softly being pressed against his throat. Without thinking he brought a hand towards the blade and tried to push it away from his neck. The metal cut the inside of his hand, but he didn’t care. He had to get it away from him. The panic in his body slowly disappeared when he heard the voice from his brother, the breathing in his neck. ”Do you find it wise to be naked and unarmed little brother?” The small laughter that came behind it told him that he was joking as well as he was serious. ”For someone other than myself could have just as easily snuck up on you.” Kettil took a deep breath and turned around from the moment he was being released from his brother’s grip. He looked down at his hand, to the red drops of blood that oozed from the inside of his hand. And then he frowned his eyebrows. He wanted to say something as clever as his brother, but the words kept out. He clenched his jaws firmly onto each other and dipped his hand in the water to get rid of the blood. There was just nothing to say against his brother, because as usual, he was right. ”Always the clever one.” He snorted and took another deep breath to calm himself down. ”Lucky for you this is not my sword hand. Not that I have a sword hand. Or anything at all to protect me.” And there it was.. some of his frustrations poured in a simple sentence. With his other hand he stroke his black hair out of his face. Kettil sighed deeply and looked at his brother again. He wanted to say something more, but his attention was being drawn to another person that had joined them. ”Oh, I didn’t see you two there. Mind some company?” In fact Kettil did mind, and in any other situation he would have said so. But now, with his brother around, he always felt like his opinion was being suppressed by his. So he just watched the girl in dead quiet and waited for his brother to answer. Kettil crouched a little, so his upper body was more covered by the water. And as respectful as he was, he looked away when the girl started to undo herself from most of her own clothes. |

| Gerolf silently cured himself when he saw that Kettil had cut his hand on his blade. Gerolf hadn't meant for his brother to get hurt, just to tease him. However it did make him happy that Kettil had at least a tempted to get the blade away from himself. At least that meant that his bother was smart enough to try and get away from danger. That he hadn't just sat there and done nothing, but at the same time it upset him all the same.Kettil couldn't defend himself, and Gerolf wanted it that way, but if he got hurt when he was gone he would hate himself for ever. He just hoped people were smart enough not to mess with his brother. For they would be asking for a slow and painful death. One in witch he would take his time torturing and hurting the person who dared hurt Kettil. The thought of it alone got his blood pumping and his heart racing. Gerolf watched as his brother washed the blood way from his hand. His jaw was clenched, and Gerolf had been right that Kettil was going to be angry with him for his teasing. ”Always the clever one.” Kettil said first as he calmed himself down.Gerolf smiled and let out a small laugh. ”Lucky for you this is not my sword hand. Not that I have a sword hand. Or anything at all to protect me.” he said next, and this changed the mood almost instantly. Gerolf took a deep breath to calm himself at the angry that had shot through his body. He was so very aware that Kettil wanted to be able defend himself, but he could defend him. He could protect him and any women that he ended up with. Kettil didn't need to become like him. What if he became just as big of a monster as he was. Then there would be no-one in the world to keep him in control. Gerolf would be taken over by his bloodlust, nothing in the world would be safe from him then. No, Kettil had to stay needing him, he had to be the reason to hide his demons. " I can defend you, you need no sword hand or means to protect yourself!" he said between his teeth. He hated when Kettil brought this up. It seemed to be happening more and more lately. "I don't know why you keep bring that up. You know I would never let anyone hurt you! So there is no need to be able to protect yourself!" he said before he heard something and looked away. He had been so annoyed that he hadn't heard the person sooner. A woman was there. “Oh, I didn’t see you two there. Mind some company?” Yrsa was her name, they had been on raids together in the past. He knew she was a strong women and she had seen him in action once or twice. Gerolf just hoped she knew to keep her mouth shut around his brother for he would hate to have to punish her here in front of kettil. He hadn't ever verbally expressed for people to not say anything, but he knew people were aware he was keeping Kettil in the dark. Yrsa hadn't waited for their answer as she started to undress and get in. Gerolf had never taken his eyes off her. Watching as she got in, leaving some of her clothing on, a pity. It also hadn't missed his notice that Kettil had looked away. " You are welcome in our company, but It appears you didn't care if we minded or not anyways." he said to her as she came back up from under the water and swam closer to them. Yrsa would make a good bride for someone, but maybe not the brothers. He wanted two women that would be easily controlled for him and Kettil. This women was very far from that controllable. He planed to look for some women for them soon. It would be best if he got Kettil married and settled down sooner then later. Then he would have something to distract his thoughts of needing to protect himself. Turning back to his brother Gerolf took a deep breath. "We will talk about this more later!" he said before he pushed his hair out of his eyes. "I am sorry you were hurt however" he said before he grabbed at Kettil's hand to see the damage. He would need to bandage it up when they got home if it didn't stop bleeding soon. Letting it go he gave his brother one more stern look before turning back toward Yrsa. " So Yrsa, how is training?" he asked her with a smirk on his face. Trying to make light conversation seeing as she had now joined the two naked brothers in the water. If she had been any other women, and Kettil had not been next to him he might have tried to have some fun with her. Dip his cock into something beautiful and tight. However he couldn't have though thoughts at the moment. No he needed to keep though thoughts all at bay in the company of Kettil. |

| Watching the pair of brothers carefully out of the corner of her eye, Yrsa noticed that Kettil turned away when she was undressing and couldn’t stop the small smile that appeared on her face at the polite gesture. She also noticed Gerolf did not look away, but wouldn’t have expected it from the viking anyway.
“The water just looked so inviting,” she answered the older brother, leaning backwards to float around in the water while still keeping her eyes on the pair of them. “Sorry for interrupting your conversation.”
If she were being honest, she should have just left. There were a number of people in Skagerrak whose bad sides you didn’t want to find yourself on, and Gerolf was certainly one of them. However, the shield maiden had a bad habit of doing things she really shouldn’t. This was just one more she could add to the list.
Watching the interactions between the two men, Yrsa could sense a bit of tension. She knew her family wasn’t exactly like normal families but it seemed very unusual to her. She just wished she could hear what they were saying. Because she was nosy and liked to know everything that was going on around her.
“Training is going well. I quite enjoy it. Some of the younger ones seem very talented, it’ll be interesting to watch them as they grow.” Doing what she did best, Yrsa continued, “We should train together sometime. We haven’t before, have we?” She was pretty confident she’d recall fighting someone like Gerolf. He’d probably beat her, but unlike a lot of her fellow warriors, she didn’t mind losing when it was just in training. She dipped beneath the water again for a moment and came back up just a little bit closer to the two men.
Pushing a few wet strands of hair out of her face, Yrsa then turned her attention towards Kettil. “How are your horses?” she inquired. She knew they weren’t really his horses, but they might as well be. He likely knew them better than anyone else in Skagerrak. She loved animals, and on occasion wandered through the stables to say hello.
“Do you two come here a lot? I’ve never noticed it before.” Probably because she was busy wandering in the direction of the wolf’s wood, hoping to catch a few glimpses of those animals. |

| As Kettil washed the blood of his hand, he felt his brother was staring at him, in an almost obsessive way. But after all those years he didn’t bother anymore. He had grown used to it and even accepted it, even though he had never liked it. Gerolf was a complicated man, only true to his own words and thoughts. Nobody ever dared tell him what to do, and if there was someone so stupid to try, it would be his or hers first and last time. Kettil had also learned it the hard way, many times over and over again. He was lucky that he was his brother, because if not, Gerold would have never been so patient with him. But that did not meant that Kettil always obeyed, or always kept his mouth shut. There were times where Gerold and his stupid ‘ways of living’. And this was one of them. Kettil looked at the slit in his hand, and the blood that kept running, thinned by the water. And as he spoke, he could see Gerolf’s anger grow. ”I can defend you, you need no sword hand or means to protect yourself.” Kettil pressed his jaws onto eachother as well. At that moment the brothers looked more like eachother than they would probably dare to admit. ”But it just doesn’t make any sense, Gerolf.” Kettil closed his eyes, turned his head away and took a deep sigh. He felt a storm of words coming. He knew his brother hated it when he brought up this topic. ”I don’t know why you keep bringing that up. You know I would never let anyone hurt you! So there is no need to be able to protect yourself.” Kettil looked back at his brother. ”One day you will change your mind. If it is not too late, then.” And when he had finished his sentence, there sounded the splashing of water on the side of the little lake. A woman. Kettil wasn’t sure Gerolf had heard his last words, but it didn’t matter anyway. He would always lose a discussion with his brother. Just as he would always lose in battle. ”You are welcome in our company, but it appears you didn’t care if we minded or not anyways.” Slowly Kettil looked back to the woman, first checking from the corner of his eye is her body was covered or not. When he saw no nudity, he dared to turn his head fully. ”The water just looked so inviting.” Yrsa -he knew her name just like he knew all warriors names- floated towards them, looking at both the brothers. ”Sorry for interrupting your conversation.” She said, but Kettil had the idea that her apologies were no sincere. He pinched his eyes by a hairbreadth and observed her intensely. ”We will talk about this more later.” Gerolf said, and Kettil inhaled subtle. Offcourse they would talk about it more later.. Just like they always did. ”I am sorry you were hurt however.” Kettil raised his shoulders, but then felt how his brother clenched his hand around his wrist. Immediately Kettil pulled back, expecting another one of his so said jokes. But then he saw that Gerolf really wanted to check the damage he had done. The look he saw in his eyes were a combination of guilt and anger. ”It will be just fine.” Kettil answered and pulled back his hand, only to wash the blood away once again. Gerolf turned into another man when he spoke to Yrsa, asking how her training was going. He was softer and more gentle. The exact opposite from when he was home alone with Kettil. Normally Kettil was the warm and soft one in the prescience from others, but now.. when his brother was with him, he always kept himself to the background. He stared at the water, at his broken reflection and sighed so soft not even Gerolf would be able to hear it. |

| Gerolf did his best to keep calm about the situation when he heard Kettil speak ”But it just doesn’t make any sense, Gerolf.” He didn't need to make sense to his younger brother. He had rules, and his rules should be followed without so much back talk. If Kettil had been anyone else he would have killed them the second time they disobeyed him, or spoke back to him. Gerolf didn't I've third chances to anyone but his bother. Most of the time he didn't even give second chances. Taking a deep breath he waited until Kettil opened his eyes again, When Kettil opened his eyes and looked at his brother again he beat him to speaking. ”One day you will change your mind. If it is not too late, then.” Kettil said, and it took everything in him not to strike his brother then and there for speaking out of turn that way to him. He hadn't changed his mind in years, and wasn't going to any time soon. Besides he had been going on raids less, making sure to take care of Kettil more. Kettil's farm had been making good money anyways. He raised good horses and was making a name for himself. Gerolf often wondered why that wasn't enough for his brother. Why did he have this strong need to become a fighter. When he had a brother who could easily kill anyone who tired to harm himself and their future wives. He wanted to keep the conversation going, but with the new guest in the water with him he kept quite and kept his attention on the shield maiden. “The water just looked so inviting,” had been the first things she had said to him after he had welcomed her in a friendly, but not so friendly way. followed by “Sorry for interrupting your conversation.” Gerolf wanted to say something snarky back to her, for he felt that she really wasn't sorry. If she had been she wouldn't have gotten into the water in the first place. He turned his head back to his brother he had checked his hand and Kettil's reply had been "It will be just fine" He could see his brother was still had about his little joke, but he really hadn't meant for him to get hurt. Kettil should know that, if he was really trying to hurt him, he would have been hurt a whole lot worse. Granted Gerolf hardly ever punished his brother in a physical way, most of the time he would yell, get in his face and intimidate him. He had only hit him a handful of times, and had felt badly afterwords. Kettil was the only person Gerolf had ever felt remorse for when it came to hurting him physically. Yrsa interrupted his train of thought as she spoke again, answering his questions from before. “Training is going well. I quite enjoy it. Some of the younger ones seem very talented, it’ll be interesting to watch them as they grow.”she said to him at first. " Yes I agree, I look forward to seeing what they become. We need more vikings to go on raids. To replace the ones that we lost." he said before she spoke again. “We should train together sometime. We haven’t before, have we?” she said next and Gerolf felt himself smiling at her, and not in a friendly manner. " If you think you could handle yourself against me, then yes we should. However I'm not sure if you could. I know you have seen me fight. I don't hold by in training. However I haven't seen you train in some time, you could prove me wrong." he said cockily to her. He had seen her fight, and she was strong, but he was much stronger. He knew he could take her down if he really needed to. However her would rather have her on her back underneath him before he killed her. If it ever came to that anyways. Gerolf looked to his brother when Yrsa asked about his horses and he didn't answer her right away. " Its rude not to speak when someone speaks to you Kettil. She asked how your horses are." he said to him as he sent him an hard glare. Making sure his back was to the shield maiden and she wouldn't see his face. How dare his brother be rude, sure he was just as annoyed as Kettil had to be about the women being there, but he should answer when he is spoken to. " And this is my first time here. I had no idea it was here until today. However I think my dear brother has been here before. Isn't that right?"He said asking Kettil before turning back to the women and looking at her and how her clothes hung closer to her body now that they were wet. She was a very beautiful women, maybe he should be nicer, get her on her back a whole lot faster that way. He smiled at the thought of it before looking away and swimming around his brother in a small circle. |

| It was a bit easier to eavesdrop on their conversation now that she was closer than she’d been when hiding in the bushes, but Yrsa didn’t want them to know that she was eavesdropping. Not everyone appreciated such behavior, and while she was certain Kettil wouldn’t do anything stupid even if he was upset with her, she couldn’t say the same of Gerolf. How the two of them could have been raised by the same parents, she’d never understand.
He replied to her comments about the thegns being trained and Yrsa nodded happily. She genuinely liked to help people, and fighting was something she was good at, so it had all worked out for her rather well. She was facing the pair of brothers, but had come a bit too close, and changed direction, drifting away from them again. Gerolf was a little too unpredictable for her to feel comfortable getting any closer.
His response to her offer of training together wasn’t entirely unexpected, but Yrsa slanted a look in his direction anyway. “It’s not always about sheer strength,” she answered simply. Sure, he was definitely physically stronger than she was. By a lot. But fighting and surviving were never only about strength. Instinct, reflexes, agility, talent; these were all equally as important. He wouldn’t be the first arrogant bastard she’d taken down, if she proved able. And she was just arrogant and reckless enough to risk it. “I do love to prove people wrong,” she added with a grin.
Her eyes widened when she heard the way Gerolf was speaking to Kettil. Sure, being polite was nice, but listening to the way he spoke to his brother, Yrsa was rendered speechless. If Garth ever spoke to her that way, honestly if anyone ever spoke to her in such a way, she’d have broken their nose. Of course, Garth would never speak to her like that. No wonder Kettil seemed upset with his brother. The elder Hagensson didn’t seem the easiest of people to get along with.
"I was thinking about coming by the stables some time, if that would be okay with you?" No, she didn't actually need his permission, but she was a polite person and also didn't want Kettil thinking his brother's reaction was in any way normal. Plus, from what she had been able to overhear of their conversation, there was something she wanted to discuss with the younger man.
Apparently she’d brought up a sore subject when she asked if they’d been here before, and immediately regretted having said anything. “Have either of you seen the wolves in the wolf’s wood? I usually wander in that direction,” she announced, trying to change the subject. She didn’t want to be an excuse for Gerolf to antagonize his brother some more. |

| The conversation was still in his head. Kettil was distracted by it, and started to miss things his brother was telling Yrsa and vica versa. Was this what his life had become? Living up to his brothers expectations. Only taking steps forward on the path that he had chosen for him? While his own path was calling for him. Gerolf’s slightly irritated voice woke him from his slumber. ”It is rude not to speak when someone speaks to you Kettil. She asked how your horses are.” Kettil pressed his jaws firmly onto eachother and stared right back at his brother for a second. When he turned his head and spoke to Yrsa, he sounded more rough than he had meant. ”They are not my horses. Nothing here is truly mine.” He inhaled deeply when he realized he was losing his temper. This was not the time to do so, not if he didn’t wanted to get in another fight with Gerolf. ”But they are doing better than they did months ago. The traumatized ones from the battle against Halfdan are finally finding peace again. They will never be what they once were, but neither will we.” He tried to put a forced smile on his lips. ”I was thinking about coming by the stables some time, if that would be okay with you.” Kettil nodded, and his smile became more sincere. ”Everything that is fine for the earl, is fine for me.” From the corner of his eye he looked at his brother, wondering if he was happy with his answers to Yrsa. It was Gerolf’s first time by the waterfall, but Kettil had been here many times before. So when Gerold told Yrsa so, Kettil nodded that indeed he had. He would love to tell her how much he loves the nature around here, how much he loves to feel the power from the water from the waterfall falling down his shoulders.. But everytime Gerolf was in his presence, he just couldn’t be himself completely. Afraid to say something wrong, afraid to trigger him in any way. Slowly Kettil crouched so his body was again fully covered in the water. And as he did so, Gerolf started to swim around him. It made Kettil nervous in a strange way, threathening. But not a muscle on his face revealed that feeling he had. Over time he had learned how to hide his feelings from his brother. Most of them.. Gerolf was a sly man. ”Have either of you seen the wolves in the wolf’s wood? I usually wander in that direction.” Again, Kettil nodded, and for once he did not try to focus on his brother. ”I have seen them a couple of times from a distance.” He answered. It was a vague answer, but he did not wanted to be complete honest with his brother listening to all the words he said. In fact Kettil saw them multiple times in a week. He observed them. He studied their behavior and made notes from the way they lives in a pack. So when Yrsa said that she wandered there often, he frowned his eyebrows. ”You should be careful this time of the year. Winter is coming and they are much more aggressive when it comes to their territory.” Kettil cleared his throat and took his eyes away from Yrsa. He’d tell her more when she’d visit him in the stables. He did not wanted to arouse suspicion from his brother. |

| Gerolf raised an eyebrow at Yrsa when she said “It’s not always about sheer strength,” Did she think that he didn't know that? Gerolf didn't win his fights on sheer strength alone. He used his mind too, making sure he was always one step ahead of his enemy. It was easy to do with his lust for blood and death, you just did the last thing they would expect of you every time, and you would win. So far it hadn't failed him yet. He would have to show her that she was clearly thinking about how he fought wrong. “I do love to prove people wrong,” She said next and Gerolf laughed out loud at her. "Then we shall train together this week someday. For I too love to prove people wrong." he said as he looked at her for a moment and then looked away. Gerolf found that he liked her energy, but part of him, the dark part was wanting to crawl out and snuff it out before she started to think she was at all an match for himself. He had to stay in control for now. He may be hard with his brother, but Kettil had no idea how much worse he could really be, not yet anyways. After he corrected his brother he saw the love Kettil tried to give him as he spoke, and Gerolf almost would have yelled at him once more when he heard the rude tone he took with Yrsa when he spoke at first. ”They are not my horses. Nothing here is truly mine.” Kettil said and Gerolf held his jaw together to keep from yelling.Gerolf gave him so much, and he dare say something like that. He gave most of his riches to his brother, he gave most of his free time to him too. Gerolf would keep his mouth shut for now, but he wasn't pleased. He would need to start working on his plan for his brother sooner. Find him a wife, and give him something to busy himself with more. If he could find Kettil a wife, then it could fix a lot of Gerolf's problems. He would just need to start actively looking. Then once Kettil was married and settled, he would find himself someone beautiful and easy to control. That way they would do as he said when he said it. Gerolf wondered if the women looking for a husband for her daughter in Kattegat ever found one. She had said her daughter would be a good little house wife. Sassa he believed the name was? He would have to look into that once Kettil was all settled. In his thinking and swimming he missed a good amount of what Kettil had said to Yrsa, and was coming back into the conversation at the mention of wolfs from Yrsa. “Have either of you seen the wolves in the wolf’s wood? I usually wander in that direction,” she said and he paused in his swimming to look at her. His brother nodded his head and answered her. A great change to when he ignored the women the first time. ”I have seen them a couple of times from a distance.” Kettil said and Gerolf looked at him then. . ”You should be careful this time of the year. Winter is coming and they are much more aggressive when it comes to their territory.” Kettil said next and Gerolf raised an eyebrow at him Clearly his brother knew more then he was letting onto, but Gerolf also knew his brother had a love for animals, so it didn't surprise him all to much. "I can't say I've seen them before, but I bet they are wild beasts. Kettil is right,be safe around them. It would be a shame if something happened to your beautiful face." Gerolf said in a sweet voice followed by a smirk. "Ive always wondered what it would be like to own a wolf..." he said trailing off as he swam around some more.He had, from a young age. Now he wanted it for different reasons. Maybe he could train it to help him rip into his enemies on the battle field. What a sight that could be. Watching as a wolf ripped someone apart with nothing but its teeth. "Maybe someday we shall, you and I Kettil. I could find and get us both pups maybe." he said as he smiled at his brother and then swam over to the shore. "It was great seeing you Yrsa, I look forward to our training this week." he said to her before turning toward Kettil. "Come home very soon, you and I must have a chat as you know. I'll have dinner ready and waiting." he said before he stood up and walked over to his clothing. Standing there butt ass naked without a care in the world for a few moments, hoping Yrsa sees just how nice his body is before finally getting dressed again and leaving without a second look at the two of them. When Kettil got home the two of them would have words, and then tomorrow he would start working on his search for a wife for his brother. That would give him something to focus on other than he cursed need to want to learn to fight. The women would have to be young and beautiful. So Kettil wouldn't be able to take his attention off her. If he planed this all out right he would be a lot happier and have less of a reason to get angry at his brother. Plus it would give him someone else to control. He would make sure his brothers wife was a good little wife for his brother. He thought all about it as he walked home and away from the two he left in the water. |

| While the awkwardness between Yrsa and the pair of brothers in front of her had been quite clear, she wasn’t really prepared for Kettil’s answer about the horses not being his. Of course she knew that, but she had a sense that his comments were more directed at his brother than her. Sometimes she really wished she thought things through a bit better before getting herself into these kinds of situations. She’d obviously walked into some kind of family dispute. But she was too damn nosy for her own good and hadn’t been able to stop herself.
As Kettil described the state of the horses after the battle with Halfdan, she nodded. It was a shame to her that the animals were a necessary part of any battle. She had far more empathy and compassion for almost all animals than she did most people. Few animals ever attacked or killed anyone for any reason other than survival. People, though… some people enjoyed violence. She was looking directly at one of those people while thinking how awful they were.
She assumed that when Gerolf laughed at her comments, it an arrogant sort of thing; That he assumed he’d win if matched against her, and was laughing at her overconfidence in her own ability. It was certainly possible that she was being overconfident, and he’d crush her if they were ever to fight one on one, but Yrsa would never back down from a challenge. She was far too competitive to ever back down from anything. “I look forward to it,” she told him simply, not wanting to get him too riled up right now. She didn’t think he’d try anything in front of Kettil, and if she needed to run for it, at least she was still partially clothed, while he was completely naked. But she’d have a hard enough time fighting him one on one when he was only mildly irritated with her. She didn’t need him coming at her because he was genuinely angry.
Kettil answered her question about the wolves and Yrsa turned to him, eyes shining with excitement. He had seen them? She wanted to know where and when and what had he done about it? She was absolutely fascinated by them. She couldn’t help rolling her eyes when both brothers told her to be careful around them. Maybe they knew her a bit better than she’d been led to believe? ‘Careful’ wasn’t really in her vocabulary. “I’ll try to be careful,” she told them anyway, because that was the sort of thing that was expected from her.
Her gaze slid back to Gerolf when he called her beautiful. Was he trying to be funny? That wasn’t the sort of compliment she was used to receiving. To be honest, any compliments aimed in her direction were fairly rare, and that was fine to the shield maiden. She wasn’t after compliments, she was after recognition.
When Gerolf added that he might get wolf pups for the two of them, every instinct she possessed screamed out at the idea. Gerolf couldn’t be trusted around animals. She’d seen him in a real battle before, she heard what he did, knew what he was. A wolf pup that required patience and training to become a house pet would not be a suitable companion for someone like him. Honestly, she didn’t really think anyone would be a suitable companion for someone like him, but at least adult men and women would have a chance against him.
Gerolf excused himself, and Yrsa simply nodded as he bid her farewell. She was still worried about the non-existent wolf pup he’d mentioned. However, after waiting in silence for more than a few minutes, to make sure Gerolf was far enough away that she wouldn’t be overheard, Yrsa turned back towards Kettil. “So um, is he always like that?” she wondered, wanting to start slow. Who knew how loyal Kettil was to his brother, and starting off with something she wanted to ask, like ‘how the fuck can you stand being around him without stabbing him in the fucking face repeatedly’ didn’t seem the smartest idea. And then she asked the other questions she’d really wanted to ask, “You’ve really seen some of the wolves? How many? Where? When?” |

| When he spoke about the wolves, he saw a little spark lighten up in her eyes. Kettil observed her, while Gerolf also told her to be careful. There was a big difference between the both the warnings from the brothers. Where Kettil’s warning was gentle en sincere, Gerolf’s was harsh and with a double intention. Did he ever truly care about anybody else than himself and Kettil? ”I’ll try to be careful,”, Yrsa answered and Kettil glared back at her. Slightly he raised the corner of his mouth, he liked the wild side of her. That she was brutal enough to talk back at Gerolf, but was cautious enough to not trigger him. ”I’ve always wondered what it would be like to own a wolf..” It was like Kettil and Yrsa’s minds were connected. At the same time, they looked up, stared at Gerolf who luckily wasn’t staring back, but just swimming around in circles. Kettil frowned his forehead and looked back down, trying to imagine his brother handling a wolf. One of them would end up dead, if not the wolf, then Gerolf. There was no doubt about that. ”Maybe somedat we shall, you and I kettil. I could find and get us both pups maybe.” Kettil looked at his brother, who swam to the shore and started to get dressed again. ”Come home very soon, you and I must have a chat as you know. I’ll have dinner ready and waiting.” Slowly Kettil nodded his head, and stared at his brother’s back as he walked away from them. He tried to push away the thoughts about their conversation to be, and turned around to walk a little deeper into the water. Only when Yrsa spoke again, he turned back around. ”So um, is he always like that?” Kettil observed the look on his face, and he could see she was trying to hide the disgust she had for Gerolf. It only made him laugh, softly. ”I think you already know the answer to that.” Yes, Gerolf was always this way, if not even worse. It was hard to believe how their parents were able to give life to such different creatures. But it didn’t look like Yrsa wanted to talk about his brother any longer. The wolves had peeked her attention, and Kettil didn’t mind at all. ”You’ve really seen some of the wolves? How many? Where? When?” Her enthusiasm made Kettil chuckle. He raised an eyebrow as he stared at the look on her face. ”I have, many times.” He took a deep breath as he continued. ”There lives a small pack a few miles ahead. Last time I saw them was a couple of days ago.” There was a serious look on his face. Kettil spent a lot of time observing the wolves from a safe distance, making drawings about them, studying their behavior. ”I do not know why you are so interested in them, but I hope not for the same cause as Gerolf.” Kettil stroke over his shoulder, not really sure what he could tell the girl and what not. What if one way or another she would tell Gerolf that he was so familiar with the animals? ”They are born to be wild and free, not to be kept on a chain. Or as a weapon” He spoke the last word almost in disgust. That was what Gerolf was planning on turning them into, and he just could not let that happen. |

| Wading around in the water slowly, Yrsa laughed outloud when Kettil answered her. He was correct, she did already know the answer to her own question. “I was trying to be polite,” she told him, shrugging at him a bit. She didn’t want the younger brother to be mad at her as well, but couldn’t stop herself from asking, “Why do you let him talk to you like that?” For all she knew, most sibling relationships were more like theirs, but Yrsa couldn’t even stomach the thought of her brother ever treating her the way Gerolf treated Kettil. So there had to be a reason, right?
Luckily, their conversation turned back to the wolves and Yrsa grinned, listening carefully as Kettil told her about the wolf pack he’d seen not too far from where they were. She could barely contain her excitement. She almost wanted to leave right then and there, to go off in search of the wolf pack.
When Kettil told her he hoped she wasn’t interested in the wolves the same way that Gerolf was, she turned and frowned at him most severely. "Of course not! I just want to see them. I’m going to see them.” Because she was extremely determined, okay? “I just like animals,” she added after a moment. She'd yet to meet an animal she didn't like, or that didn't like her, now that she thought about it. And honestly, the thought that she could have anything in common with Gerolf was nauseating. She nodded, agreeing with Kettil’s final statement. She didn’t even like that horses were sent into battle, she wasn’t going to turn any animals into a weapon. “You’ll find no argument from me,” she told him, raising her hands defensively. "I was even sad when you mentioned the horses were hurt."
Swimming in Kettil’s direction, but continuing not to get too close, Yrsa dipped under water quickly once more, rather enjoying herself. Especially now that Gerolf had left. “I’m not like your brother,” she told him finally, just to get that out of the way once and for all. “We’re not all like that.” She meant that not everyone who killed people enjoyed it the way Gerolf did, but she was trying to keep it as civil and polite as possible. She didn’t want to cross a line with Kettil, but she also didn’t want him thinking all vikings were like his twisted brother. |

| ”I was trying to be polite.” She told him. Kettil watched her as she said those words and gently raised the corner of his mouth. If he were in a normal mood he’d be just as polite as she was. But now he just couldn’t get any words over his lips. The only thing he could focus on was the conversation he was about to have later that day, when he got back home. And she seemed to notice that he wasn’t in his normal mood. That there was something on his mind. That his brother was on his mind. ”Why do you let him talk to you like that?” For a moment he was confused because of her question. ”Because he is my brother and I respect him.” He answered quickly. It was an answer that was drilled into him from when he was only a child, and at the moment he spoke the words out loud, he started to question them. For the first time in many years. There appeared a lump in his throat, heavy and painful. Why? Did he really respect his brother? It was like respecting the gods: You respected them because they were bigger than you, stronger than you and could make you pay for everything you did wrong. Or at least that was what you believed. Gerolf was all the same. He had become the God in Kettil’s life. A God he didn’t know if he even wanted to worship him any longer. But he was so afraid of the punishment. Kettil would never be able to stand up against Gerolf. Not with words, even less with violence. The glance in Kettil’s eyes made clear that he didn’t wanted to talk about it anymore. And luckily for him, the girl seemed even more interested in the wolves than in his unhealthy relationship with his brother. Kettil hoped she would be nothing like his brother. Hoped that for once he could talk to somebody who’s visions were somehow the same as his. And faith seemed to be with him. ”Of course not! I just want to see them. I’m going to see them.” He listened to her words very carefully and observed her facial expression at the same time. She just liked animals.. So did he.. ”You’ll find no argumend from me.” She told him and raised her hands. Kettil nodded softly, pointing out that he wanted to believe the words she told him. But in order to trust her completely, he had to see first. Yrsa swam closer towards him, and Kettil wanted that he could control his heartbeat in his chest. Without wanting the stupid thing rose enormously. He was happier than he dared to admit when she stopped on a safe distance. Somehow he couldn’t estimate her, and normally he was good at things like that. Maybe it was just the bad mood he was in.. ”I’m not like your brother. We’re not all like that.” And then he pointed his eyes to the side of the lake, to his clothes that were laying in the tall grass. He clenched his jaws firmly onto each other and he traded his shyness for a slightlform of anger. He knew Gerolf wasn’t a pure good man. But who was she to judge his brother like that? ”The battle line between good and evil runs through the heart of every man and woman.” Somewhere deep down he wanted to agree with her and all the other people that truly knew his brother. But he just couldn’t talk bad about Gerolf, not without paying the price afterwards. Because somehow he always knew... ”You do not know him like I do.” Or at least that was what he told himself… And when he finished those words he swam to shore, dressed himself and left Yrsa behind in the water without giving her another look. The conversation was over. |

| Well, now she felt bad. Sighing, Yrsa wanted to try to make this all right with Kettil, but he didn’t appear to be in the mood to listen. Clearly the things she’d said about Gerolf had upset him, and even if she didn’t understand how someone could be loyal to a prick like Gerolf, Kettil was still his brother, and she could at least admit that if anyone ever spoke about her brother like that, she’d get all defensive too.
However, after he basically lectured her about how she didn’t really know Gerolf, which she thought wasn’t an entirely accurate statement, he’d waded towards the shore, gotten dressed, and left.
She hadn’t exactly been expecting that, and took a little longer than she should have to stop staring at his bum. And then she was all alone. She shrugged, and dipped back under the water. She wasn’t going to let them ruin her afternoon, even if she did feel bad for upsetting Kettil. |
