How a Queen should be
With the enormous task of hosting the feast Aslaug was already exhausted. Exhausted to the point that she did not wish to even attend anymore but what kind of Queen would she be? No, a Queen must attend, no matter the circumstances and particularly now when the King was missing. The people of Kattegat needed to see a stable Monarchy. Decorating the great hall had taken all day but it looked incredible. It felt warm and comforting instead of the empty shell of home it had felt of late.
Aslaug had dressed in her finest tunic, golden in colour and long with beautiful embroidary around the shoulders. It was a garment which had once belonged to her mother, the famous shield maiden Brynhildr. Wearing it made her feel close to her mother again and she looked down at the fabric, stroking it gently. She wore her best golden earrings and had also requested the golden goblet she so liked. Gold was a royal colour and wearing it made her feel most important. With Bjorn stepping up recently and of course introducing the feast today, it served as a subtle reminder of who was Queen.
Aslaug sat back in her throne, sipping what was already her third cup of ale despite the fact that the feast had not yet started. She stared at the back of Bjorn's head as he offered up the horse to please the Gods. The sacrifice was most welcome but Aslaug was still not pleased. She should have been the one standing there, making the sacrifice. Instead, she sat at the back of the great hall, without her King and drinking ale, awaiting the feast to start.
Holding her goblet to the side where one of the slaves sat she said," More." all the while staring ahead.

It hadn’t been an easy task, hosting a feast like this one. The preparations had cost them much time as well as gold and silver. It wasn’t just a feast for Kattegat, it was a feast for every Viking clan within the reach of Scandinavia. And Björn was enthusiast about it. Other villages meant other people, and other people meant new information and influences. People knew, that it was his dream to sail the world, to discover new lands and cultures. But his dream had broken into pieces when his father had left his family. Since then it had always been a battle between keeping Kattegat the way his father build it, and stopping Aslaug from poisoning it. Aslaug. Björn was happy that she and Ivar had kept calm during the preparations, so he could take care of everything. The great hall, the welcoming, the sacrifice. But then on the other side, she hadn’t even taken the effort to step outside and join them during the ceremony. He knew she was jealous about not doing the sacrifice herself, he knew she felt like she wasn’t being treated like a real Queen. But what kind of Queen was she, when she didn’t wanted to join the people that had travelled so far to meet her?
So when the sacrifice was over, and the people started to enter the great Hall, Björn walked upon her. His eyes fell on the empty throne beside her, the throne of his father. A throne he would never, ever sit on. Not even if they chose him as King. ”I see you have found your place yet again.” He said, with a slightly annoyed undertone in his voice. ”More.” Aslaug stared right in front of her, thought Björn not worthy of any glance. A servant came closer and poured her another cup of ale. He felt his stomach tingling from negative emotions when he looked at the always dejected look on Aslaug’s face. ”A place you don’t deserve if you don’t act like it.” Björn frowned his forehead and looked at all the people that were already inside the great hall. On their side everything was warm and happy, a feast. But on the platform where Aslaug was sitting, it was cold and dark. Like it were two different worlds. ”I suggest you go and greet our guests. Before you are no longer able to stand on your feet.” Björn looked at her in disgust. How did his father ever chose her above his mother?

How a Queen Should Be.
Aslaug’s eyes rolled back and she closed her eyes for a few moments, counting in her head..
ein, tveir, þrír, fjórir, fimm
She inhaled deeply through her nose, before opening her eyes to look at the blonde viking before her. He was tall like his father, handsome too but he was equally as cocky and self assured. With Ragnar missing, Björn had taken it upon himself to act like he owned the place. He was greeting the guests, doing the sacrifice - all the things Aslaug should be doing and it angered her. She would have done it herself… in her own time.
“You are right, Björn, this is my place. This throne you see me sitting on at this very moment is reserved for the Queen and you would do well to remember this.”
Aslaug returned her gaze into her cup for a moment but she could not control the burning anger inside her. She used to be able to just leave these things alone, to control her emotions but these days every feeling she had wanted to come to surface. She knew she was being rude, she knew it was unnecessary but she could not help it and the ale she was drinking was certainly helping her confidence.
“That chair that you see next to me,” she said, signalling her hand towards Ragnar’s throne, stroking the wooden base of the seat. “That belongs to a King. Are you a King, Björn?” She added, mockingly before taking a long sip of her ale, keeping her blue eyes firmly upon the viking before her.

Aslaug didn’t needed any words to express her hatred towards Björn. Only by looking at her facial expressions and body language he knew enough. But he knew it longer than today.. He knew Aslaug had hated him for quite a while. And on the opposite case it was exactly the same. Two people, hating each other to the bone, but they had to rule alongside each other. It wasn’t a simple task Ragnar had left over to them.. And Björn hated his father for leaving him behind with the woman that had changed his entire life since the day she had walked into Ragnar’s.
”You are right, Björn, this is my place. This throne you see me sitting on at this very moment is reserved for the Queen and you would do well to remember this.” Björn looked away from her, to the side of the great hall and clenched his jaws firmly onto each other. There were muscles moving in his neck from the power that was behind it. When he looked back at her, there had appeared an even deeper anger in his blue eyes. There were so many words on his tongue that could made her burst from anger. But he decided not to use them. Not today. Not until she really crossed his line. For now she just wasn’t worth his energy. But then she spoke again... ”That chair that you see next to me. That belongs to a King. Are you a King, Björn?” He could feel her false eyes crawl all over his skin. ”You know I am no King.” He answered her in a mocking way. What kind of stupid questions was she asking? And with what purpose? ” I have no intention in becoming King, I’m just protecting it from your poisoning hands until my father returns.” It was known that Björn had other, much bigger dreams than just sitting on a wooden throne, fixing the issues from poor farmers and dressmakers.

Poison
Poisoning hands. Now those words got her heart pumping, her fingers dancing noisely, irritably on the wooden arm of the throne. His eyes were piercing like his father’s were, sharp and blue as icy waters and when they looked at you, they felt as though they were looking at the back of your skull and every corner of your mind in-between. Right now he was showing all kinds of anger in his eyes but she did not let him intimidate her, she just stared right back through him.
“And how exactly am I poisoning anything?” Aslaug spat the words at Björn, loud enough for a few people at a nearby table to take notice. They turned to look at the two of them with concern on their faces. She smiled sweetly at them and tipped her cup to show that all was well, mouthing Sköl. She turned straight back to Björn and continued, “In case you had not noticed, boy,” she said, condescendingly “Kattegat is thriving! People come here from far and wide to trade here, to drink here. Just look around at this feast.” Her voice trailed off with her last words…
Poison? Flashbacks to her last vision went through her head, like an attack and she dropped her cup of ale onto the floor. She had seen a man with piercing blue eyes in her vision but she could not make him out. He was being choked by a snake, a beautiful green creature with lifeless black eyes. Was that Björn? What did the snake mean? She had been told that they were often poisonous. Was she the snake? What did her vision mean? What was she doing wrong here?
She often had visions which did not make sense and so she shook it off for now. She was stronger than this and she could not let Björn get under her skin.
