Dusk was just falling in Skagen, and Freyja was on her way home, to the house she shared with her mother and younger sisters. It had been a long day, but all of her days were long. Luckily, after five years, she was more than used to it by now.
She’d left the docks, planning to head towards home so she could see how everyone was before passing out for the evening. However, she noticed two young women, likely thegns, training against each other and had stopped to watch.
Freyja still longed for the days she’d spent in the training yard like these girls; learning to fight, and then training every day to get better; wishing and praying that she’d impress the Earl enough to be called a Shield Maiden. But that life was behind her now. It had been five years, but she still hadn’t completely come to terms with her new life as a shipbuilder. Her father had prepared her well for this life, though the blonde had always held out hope that she wouldn’t be forced to follow in his footsteps.
She was older now, she knew there could be no turning back, no changing her mind. She’d done the right thing for her family, and luckily, she was good at it. Good enough that the money she earned took care of them. Her mother still worked as a dressmaker, but Freyja didn’t want her to have to do that forever. And the girls would be free to do as they pleased, without having to grow up too fast, or worry about how much money they’d be able to bring in. For Freyja, that made it all worth it.
Turning to leave when the pair of women finished their fight, a familiar face caught her eye. Her face split into a grin as she started towards the small group. She’d been so caught up watching the two fighters, and getting lost reminiscing in her own head, she hadn’t paid any mind to the other people observing and instructing the girls.
It had been a while since she’d last spoken to Haskell; She'd heard his name here and there, but she didn't exactly have loads of free time, and it was unlikely that he did either. But they’d both grown up in Skagen, and he was one of the vikings who’d trained her. Freyja had always thought he was exactly the sort of person a Viking should be.
“Haskell!” she called, trying to get his attention. With the sun beginning to set, they wouldn’t be training for much longer, she imagined, so she had no qualms about interrupting and approaching him. She knew she didn’t really have time to do this. She should be back home already, sleeping, because she’d be putting in another long day tomorrow. But Freyja pushed those thoughts to the back of her mind. She didn’t often make time to have fun, or reconnect with old friends and acquaintances. But this one time, what could it hurt?
“How are you?” she asked when she drew nearer, wondering if he had any exciting stories or grand adventures to share with her.

Haskell
Showing Halfdan and King Harald the promising future of Skagen gave him always some credits. He stood aside the earl of Skagen and looked over the young men and women of Skagen as they fought each other in single combat. Haskell, like usual rolled a straw of hay between his lips, judging every single one of them with his critical look. ‘Seems as promising good fighters.’ Halfdan nodded with that smile. Haskell looked aside, grinning rather amused before looking back to his warriors. ‘I only make good fighters.’ Haskell reacted, giving him earl a wink before walking over to one of his best Vikings. As others, Haskell always kept his sword on his back, a sword that meant more to him then his own life probably did. He reached over his shoulder and pulled it out, teasing his man in the shoulder before standing before him. He looked aside to Halfdan who only nodded. Haskell turned to one of his Vikings, bending a little through his knees before he gestured the young man to attack him, which he did. The fight was smooth and to the point, the way he learned all his future Vikings and shield maidens to fight. There was no point in bragging, that wouldn’t safe your life. This man was ready to become a Viking, he fought good but Haskell was better, tripping him onto the ground before pointing his sword to his throat. ‘Not good enough if they can’t beat you.’ Halfdan joked, nodding in approval before walking away. Haskell chuckled, offering the man his hand before helping him up. He turned around and looked to the fine young women, not as much shield maidens as they were Vikings in the making but all the less, they were valuable.
Haskell was devoted to his work an loyalty to both Skagen and there leaders. His job was preparing fighters and here he stood, from the early beginnings of days until the ends on times. The male part stopped fighting, looking how Haskell putted new combinations together, weaker women to fight the better and for that learn from them. The only way to get better was to be beaten down and step up again. His brown eyes scoured their bodies as they fought tiredly against each other. It was a nice sight, fighting woman, he wouldn’t complain.
The calling of his name pulled him out of concentration, he turned around and looked over his shoulder until he found the source of his name calling. He pinch the tip of his sword in the sand, pulling up a smirk before looking back to his young female warriors. Yes, Freyja was one of them some time ago. A fine young warrior, ready to fight, until her family needed her, for that he respected her choice, despite he rather had her hanging around. She was promising and it was hard to see her go. When he saw her closing by in the corner of his eyes he looked aside to her. ‘Look who we have here.’ He started before she asked how he was. ‘If it isn’t my promising shield maiden that left me high and dry.’ He smiled friendly, pulling the straw of hay out of between his lips, dropping it on the ground. He didn’t meant a word of it. His eyes followed her body for a moment before he looked in front of them. ‘I’m good.’ He nodded. He whistled between his teeth and he tilted his head with a warning look to one of the girls who was more playing than fighting. ‘How are you?’ He asked, turning his head to look back to her. ‘Your family good?’ He hadn’t spook with Freyja for quite some time, both too busy to take notice. He pushed his sword of and pointed to the female group. ‘Miss you around here.’ He smiled, winking while turning half his body before announcing they could quite for the day. Haskell was quite the charmer, no denying that.

Grinning at his greeting, Freyja shook her head. “I don’t think it went quite like that,” she replied. She had to admit, she didn’t mind hearing ‘promising shield maiden’. She’d always had this fear that no one had been sad to see her go because she wasn’t very good at fighting. She knew this was ridiculous, she’d held her own against plenty of skilled fighters. But she couldn’t always help entertaining such thoughts from time to time.
As he nodded and said he was well, Freyja took a moment to study his face. He looked much the same as he did the last time she saw him. Was that a new scar above his eye? Or had that always been there? She wasn’t certain, but five years certainly hadn’t done anything to diminish his looks.
“I’m exhausted,” she answered immediately when he asked how she was. She wasn’t the type of person to hesitate or give half truths. She was ‘too honest for her own good’ as her mother often told her. “But I don’t mind the work. Keeps me strong, at least,” she added with a shrug. Then he asked about her family and Freyja’s face lit up with a genuine smile. “They’re well! The girls are getting older now and starting to figure out what they want to do with their lives. Visna is learning to be a dressmaker, like our mother.” You could hear the pride in her voice whenever she spoke of any of her sisters. Freyja could talk about her family for hours, but didn’t really think Haskell was actually interested in their day to day lives, or that funny thing Tóra did that one time, so she stopped herself there.
“And yours? How are your parents?” It was a small village, but Freyja kept fairly busy these days and didn’t interact with many people outside of her family. His parents were nice people though, she recalled.
His next words were not taken as the compliment she imagined they were intended to be. It was probably not very seemly to complain about your lot in life, especially when she was doing well for herself. But that part of her that was too honest to keep her mouth shut won, as it always did. “I miss being here. Gods, I miss it every day.” Her voice was neutral, resigned. She was too old for whining. She watched the younger fighters disperse after Haskell dismissed them for the day.
That could be her, right now, helping train new vikings and shieldmaidens, if she’d stuck with it. But being a thegn or a shield maiden couldn’t guarantee her enough money to support her family, so it hadn’t been an option.
“So,” she began, attempting to change the subject, “is this what you do every day? Training new warriors? No exciting adventures to tell me about? Anything I’ve missed over the last few years?” She looked in the direction of the Earl, who’d left before she reached Haskell. Freyja didn’t involve herself in politics. When Halfdan had taken over Skagen, she’d mostly stayed out of it, not wanting to risk anything happening to her family if she chose the wrong side to fight for. Luckily, she was good at her job and her job was important, so everyone left them all alone. “How are things with him?” she wondered, wanting to know what her new Earl was like.

Haskell
Haskell never could leave the teasing, that was what made him a little saint in the job of killing and fighting. Aside that he was still a man and he acted around woman like almost every man, although he had respect. And for Freyja … a lot. He knew how big a step it was she took to go back to her parents and leave her dream of fighting. He probably would do the same if his parents weren’t surrounded by all kind of friendly neighbors. But still, sometimes he felt guilty, a feeling Freyja never would have to feel for she did the right thing. He chuckled on her words, looking to the fine woman and men that would need to defend Skagen in the future. No … it didn’t went like that. He almost let her go with his blessing. Haskell looked aside to her, more serious. ‘Glad to see you.’ He stated, out of his heart. He was happy she was here, alive and well, he was always fond of his promising apprentices, she was one of them.
He felt Freyja watching him as he looked back to the fight, tugging up the corner of his mouth to let her know he knew she was looking. Not that he minded it, he was a pretty confident person. She wouldn’t find something in his face that he didn’t wanted to find … not that he had secret, he was an open book. When she stated that she was exhausted he looked back to her. ‘And even then you look beautiful.’ He said with an almost gracious bow, complimenting her on still being so good looking even when there was five years passed since the day they saw each other daily … now there was hardly time. He should make more time for the people he cared about, before it was maybe too late. When she talked about her sister he chuckled, remembering the girls vividly enough before his eyes. ‘At least Visna can take over your mothers work, like you did for your father.’ He smiled towards her, although his smile was a little sad on the end. Her father was a good ship builder, one of the better, he was missed by many. It was good to have a big family, he hadn’t had that luck. ‘They already fought over a boy, or dragged all kinds in?’ He winked to her knowing it couldn’t be easy some days to have four sisters to help around. Despite it would have to be pretty entertained sometimes, he rather lived along, in the quiet piece, he saw enough violence through the day already.
‘Grey, old, deaf.’ He joked about his own parents. ‘My father is getting all grumpy and judging because I’m not much around,’ he felt silence and gave Freyja a short promising look. ‘mother says it’s his temper playing with his age. But they are fine, leaving the peaceful live on the farm.’ He nodded, knowing there was no safer place for them to be then there. And Vern was there to watch a little over so Haskell felt a little reassured by it.
When she said she missed it he looked aside to her for a moment, squeezing his eyes a little together like he wanted to figure out what she was thinking more. But he let her, because he respected her and her choose, if she wanted to talk she would. She shifted the subject and Haskell turned to face her more properly now all his young warriors where a way. ‘If I don’t train them who would be there to take over my work.’ He pointed out with a small smile before gesturing to the road, slowly walking. ‘We went raiding, nothing serious, a little tensing with Skagerrak,’ his voice fell as she asked about Halfdan. ‘To your taste probably a little to blood eager and ruthless. He isn’t always … nice.’ He thought about it. ‘But a good leader, joining him to Paris if the time is right.’ He followed, a little proud maybe he had that honor. He stood high in ranks with Halfdan and he never wanted to bring that in danger. ‘You better have him not looking at you.’ That was a warning, Halfdan could be ruthless with woman and then we weren’t talking about his brother. ‘Can I walk you home? Or looking for something more peaceful first?’ He asked her friendly, he could be the gentlemen sometimes. He knew his way around quiet and peace, after every day he needed that badly himself.

Smiling as he laughed, Freyja nodded in agreement. “It’s good to see you too. I should really try spending time with people other than my sisters on occasion,” she commented with a laugh of her own. It was true. She rarely interacted with anyone other than her sisters and the few people around the village she needed to get supplies from for her work. She didn’t have the most social of lives at the moment.
Her eyes widened when he called her beautiful, but she brushed the compliment off quickly. “Such a charmer,” she replied, assuming he was trying to be funny. “I bet all the girls are completely taken with you,” she added with a grin, glancing quickly to where the thegns had just been training. He was a genuinely good person, so Freyja didn’t have any trouble assuming there were plenty of young women in the village who fancied him.
Swiping a strand of hair out of her face and tucking it behind her ear quickly, Freyja nodded again. “That’s the plan, at least. She already spends most of her time at the shop. I think I’d go mad confined to such a small space, but she loves it.” Unlike Visna, Freyja loved being outdoors all the time. It was one of the few things she really loved about shipbuilding. Spending most of her days outside, and down by the beach made it all the more bearable.
Shaking her head, Freyja nodded just a bit. “Well, luckily I’m not home for most of that nonsense. But I’ve been dragged into more than a few of their arguments as soon as I walk through the front door. It’s hard to remember they’re not all 8 years old anymore.” She didn’t want to get in the middle of her sisters and their boy troubles. But having heard from Hakon recently that a young girl from the village had been assaulted by someone, Freyja knew the Gods wouldn’t be able to protect anyone from her that truly hurt one of her sisters.
Her dark thoughts evaporated when Haskell started talking about his parents. She couldn’t help the sharp laugh that escaped at the way he described them. “My mother would sew my lips together if I ever talked about her like that! But, they can’t expect you to come around all the time? You’ve got a lot of responsibilities here.” Nodding, Freyja sometimes wondered what a calm, peaceful farm life looked like. If she wasn’t a shipbuilder, she’d be a shield maiden, which was as far from calm and peaceful as it got.
When he answered her questions about Halfdan, Freyja’s brow furrowed in concern. “Tensing with Skagerrak?” she repeated, knowing that had to be because of the previous Earl’s daughter, who was the wife of the Earl in Skagerrak. The whole thing never really sat well with Freyja, but she wasn’t going to rock the boat with so many people counting on her. Nor did she like the idea of an Earl she needed to avoid, or caution her sisters about. Perhaps she needed to sit them down again and make sure they all remembered how to defend themselves.
“Home is probably a good idea. I’d like that,” she answered with a smile. However, Freyja was not the type to walk around in silence. “Are you looking forward to going to Paris? Or do you just want to travel the whole world? And the destination doesn’t matter all that much?”

They went through the same things together, she didn’t had the time she just to have before and he didn’t either. It made him chuckled on her words, looking down for a moment. ‘And I should spend a little more time with somebody other than my becoming Vikings and shield maidens.’ He pointed with his head to the young people taking their things to leave. But, live wasn’t that easy for people as busy as them. He often looked at woman … or came home to his parents asking them if they would see their son getting married. As much as Haskell loved a woman to come home to, there was hardly the time. If he wanted it he would have to take a step back and for now all he cared about was presenting Halfdan of Skagen his finest warriors.
Being around Haskell resulted in a often easy funny conversation, this wasn’t any different despite he truly meant the words, Freyja was a fine looking woman and he wouldn’t ignore it if it was standing right beside him. She smiled it away and on her first words he could only pull up that charming smile of his. When she stated that all the girls are taken by him he just laughed softly, leaning his shoulder against hers for a moment. ‘I don’t say it to all the woman walking around.’ He smiled, pulling back while looking aside to her. Haskell was a charmer, would always be but he had to have something other than being a Viking, a teacher. If he hadn’t the time for a wife he at least had to make time to talk to beautiful woman such like Freyja herself.
While the subject drifted towards sisters and parents Haskell watched the last of his fighting group go. He relaxed a little under the silence, let his guard drop a little to make place for a conversation he longed for entire day, one that didn’t involve fighting tactics or what so ever. ‘If we all would love the same things there wouldn’t be much to do around here. It’s good to hear.’ He smiled. And he meant it, Freyja was one of his best fighters once, they trained a lot, they talked a lot so he knew a little about her life as she did about his. Having no brothers or sisters it was nice to hear that things went according to plan, the fights, the boys, it made him smile. ‘If their bigger sister isn’t marrying a good man it is their duty to do so, included the arguments.’ He winked. But she was right, time went way to fast, flying almost. He noticed that by visiting his parents, how grey they became, how difficult things became. His expressions shifted for a moment but he pointed his attention rather quick back to her, noticing that she too was thinking about something. When she protested against his rather nonchalant words about his parents he smiled a little. He signed softly, shaking his head. ‘But they are still my parents, I offered for them to move more closer to the center but they love that farm way to much.’ He shrugged, looking aside to her. ‘Stubborn like that donkey we have.’ He muttered.
The subject diverted a little, towards the earl, Halfdan. When she asked a question about the tensing he looked aside to her. ‘We all know they will clash together one day. People saying that Skagerrak is preparing for a raid, others saying she has followers hanging around here, spying.’ He looked around. ‘Makes my job that much harder.’ He murmured. He couldn’t trust anybody if that was true. For so far there weren’t any signals but it was possible, logical even. ‘Didn’t notice something out of the ordinary?’ He asked her. He didn’t wanted to talk the business of his jobs but he did for the safely of Freyja.
When she suggested home he pointed her almost polite the way, walking aside her over the path. With her question he smiled. ‘Wouldn’t you looking forward to it?’ He asked her right back. After those first raids to Paris he always wanted to visit Kattegat, the king himself, the sons, the famous tails about Paris, their loses and victories. ‘As long as I can raid and fight I’m a happy man, the location doesn’t really matter for that fact.’ He winked. ‘You know,’ he began, looking aside to her. ‘If we travel for Paris we will have to get one of our ship builders with us, for the boats, in case off. Wouldn’t you be interested?’ He asked curious. She didn’t need to be a shield maiden to see the world, a ship builder was equally important, how else would they get over those big dangerous waters?

Freyja couldn’t help but nod in understanding at Haskell’s reply. “It seems we both need to get out more often,” she told him with a laugh. It was something she was determined to fix in the near future. It was hard, when your life got into a certain pattern, to recognize when the pattern needed to be broken. But at least now she could make an effort to adjust her priorities a bit.
He nudged her shoulder and she laughed, rolling her eyes at his playful demeanor. But his next statement had her pausing for a moment. Leaning back to look up at him, she quirked an eyebrow. “Are you teasing me?” she wondered, not entirely sure how serious he was being. She quickly tried to go back over the length of their conversation to determine exactly how oblivious she might've been.
She was still mildly confused when he mentioned marriage. Freyja shrugged again. “As long as they’re happy. It’s not their fault I refuse to interact with other people,” she added with a grin. She didn’t want to put any pressure on her sisters to grow up too fast, or make life changing decisions about their future. She got the feeling Visna would like nothing more than to meet a man who’d sweep her off her feet and get her out of their crowded house. But she was only 16 and had led a relatively sheltered life.
Freyja couldn’t help but laugh at the things Haskell was saying about his parents. She’d always had an easy relationship with her parents, and knew she wouldn’t like not seeing her mother so often. “I think it’s understandable. And it’s no bad thing they love what they do. Believe me,” she added with more emphasis than she probably should have. She’d already made her feelings plain enough, she really shouldn’t continue complaining about it. It wasn’t very mature.
Her eyes widened at his revelation. “Spies? Here in Skagen?” Maybe she shouldn’t have been as surprised as she was. “No, I haven’t,” she answered honestly, but quickly added, “I don’t really know what I’d even be looking for, though. Sorry, I know that’s not very helpful.” She was still trying to wrap her mind around the whole thing, but couldn't imagine how stressful that information was for him.
As they started on their way towards her house, Freyja grinned at his question, assuming he meant it hypothetically. “Of course I would. That was one of the reasons I wanted to become a shield maiden in the first place.” Traveling had always been a dream. Plus, she’d always loved being out on the ocean. She listened as Haskell talked about the inevitable trip to Paris, but stopped in her tracks when she realized what he was saying. “I could go with you?” Her eyes lit up in excitement at the thought of it.
Almost immediately her mind was racing with a million different things. Rúna was a thegn now, if Freyja went with them when they raided, her sister wouldn’t be alone. Well, obviously she wouldn’t be alone, but without family. But, if she went with Rúna, there was no one at home with the rest of the family who really knew how to fight. What if something happened while they were gone? But did she really want to pass up such an opportunity? She’d already given up becoming a shield maiden in order to take care of her family, she deserved to do something for herself, didn’t she? Realizing Haskell was standing there while she dealt with this inner debate, Freyja sighed. “I’d need to think about it. I’d love to go with you, but… it’s more complicated than that.”

Haskell
It was Haskell his nature when he wasn’t actually working, to be the funny charming man Skagen knew him to be. There wasn’t a woman or girl not comfortable around him because he was always so charming and generous with everything. So when she asked if he was taunting her he throw his head back and chuckled for a moment. ‘Yes Freyja, I’m teasing you.’ He nodded on her words. ‘You know I’m never serious if I’m not actually working.’ He smiled. Haskell loved to be two different person, he could be very serious and stern on moment but he was always calm and considering. He could handle a good joke and he certainly could give you some. But only when the time suited. Freyja knew him to be her teacher, aside he was a joke during trainings to sometimes, they all respected him. He could joke, yet he beat your ass twice that hard if he came back to business. He maybe told many jokes but he wasn’t a joke if it came to fighting or serving the earl of Skagen.
When she talked about her sisters and not pressuring them he just nodded. He knew them, not by face but what Freyja used to tell him about them. It was good for them to have a sister like her, just as it was the other way around. She would make them a little mature while they held Freyja young. Just as it was with his parents, he kept themselves young by running that farm like they were still twenty years old. It was a rather fun thought really. He wanted to say it would be their death, keep working like this on that age but he just felt silent, knowing that it wasn’t that good to say it out loud. Gods could play rather tricky days these days.
When she blurted out about the spies he looked aside. ‘Why not?’ He asked her right back. ‘Halfdan took this, left one member of the earl family alive, she is coming, if we like it or not.’ He shrugged. Not that there was any reason to doubt the fact that Halfdan had a pretty secure place here, his brother backed him up and Rogaland had a pretty good army to be sailed over here. Whatever Skagerrak wanted to do, it would have to be big to overthrow Halfdan. None the less was Haskell alert on people sticking their noses into business that wasn’t theirs. When she excused herself from not being helpful he just shook his head gentle. ‘Don’t apologize. Just keep an eye out, for anything. We don’t know what we are looking for but it has to be around here. We just don’t want any surprises to turn up.’ He smiled, like t was not that big a deal.
When he offered her to join she was smiling, excited and Haskell frowned his eyebrows amused. ‘Yes with me, or unless you want to follow another?’ He smiled, knowing there wasn’t. He was so far up he commanded almost Halfdan his men. Or that was at least the position he wanted. When she said she needed to think about it he looked aside and nodded. ‘Freyja, this is me asking, giving you the thought of it.’ He began before his face became a little more serious. ‘Halfdan won’t ask, he will command you. If it ever comes that far, I just want you to know I’m the one you can say yes or no to, not your earl.’ He said, looking back in front of him. Halfdan wouldn’t be so kind, he wasn’t the earl to be kind anyway. So if she ever was planning on saying no then Haskell would do his best to find Halfdan something else before he made up his mind anyway.

Freyja was relieved when Haskell admitted he was teasing her. That’s what she’d assumed at first, but didn’t want to risk discovering she’d been misunderstanding and make things awkward between them. Hopefully she hadn’t already done that. Laughing at his comment about never being serious, she nodded at him. “I should have known!” she admitted with a small shrug. She didn’t mind being teased, just as long as she knew they were teasing.
They continued on in the direction of the house Freyja shared with her mother and sisters. Freyja could probably walk these paths and streets blindfolded, if she needed to. When Haskell commented on the spies again, Freyja nodded in understanding. “No, you’re right. It makes sense. I just have a hard time picturing anyone I know as a spy.” Sure, she knew there were people who didn’t like Halfdan or his brother, because they weren’t exactly the nicest of people. And there were people who had been loyal to the old earl and his family, who probably were not too keen on the brothers. Freyja herself was not too keen on them, but had simply made it her mission to avoid them both at all costs, and keep her family away from them.
When Haskell mentioned ‘she’ is coming, Freyja thought back to the young woman she’d known years ago. Gunnvor had been the earl’s daughter, and was now a different earl’s wife. Freyja had rather admired her, but she’d only been fourteen at the time. “You really think so? That she’s not content with her life in Skagerrak?” Freyja had no idea, of course. But really, what did Gunnvor even have here? A handful of old vikings who were still loyal to her father? A friend or two she hadn’t seen in fourteen years? What did she really have to gain by coming back, but harming Skagen? “It just seems odd to me, I guess.”
When Haskell asked her to keep an eye out for anything, she nodded immediately. Again, she wasn’t sure what she’d begin to notice now that she hadn’t before, but there was nothing wrong with being alert.
He was teasing her again, she was certain, and this time she followed suit. “Why? Do you know anyone else I could follow?” she asked, flashing a grin his way. She’d have a much harder time avoiding the earl and his brother if she was on a raid with him, but at least they’d be far away from most of her family. Rúna was only a thegn, hopefully they wouldn’t pay her too much attention.
She nodded as the conversation turned a bit more serious. The idea of going to Paris, or anywhere really, with them was going to be on Freyja’s mind for days now. She’d have to discuss this with her mother and her sisters, and still she’d need to think about it for herself. All she knew was she wanted to go. “I will think on it, and try to give you an answer shortly,” she told him with a smile. She wasn’t really sure what to say to his comments about Halfdan simply commanding her to join them even if she didn’t want to go, but she’d deal with that when she came to it.
“Do you know when that will be? Are things progressing quickly, or is it still only being planned?” She wanted to know exactly how quickly she needed to get him an answer. Freyja had learned so much from this conversation with him. Plus, she was glad she was able to reconnect with her friend. She’d have to make more of an effort to keep in touch with him in the future.

Haskell
Just as her it was hard for him to picture anybody who could be a spy. If the gods wanted this to happen it needed to happen. Haskell was a small around twenty years when Skagen was taken over, he heard the people yell from the farm he and his parents lived on. It was a very vivid imagine but he wasn’t there, he just saw the things change. Before all of that it was rather peaceful place to be Skagen, now it was different, more dangerous, quiet. He always asked himself how many people would be there wanting to have the old earl, or at least his daughter back. He could imagine it were a few. ‘Me to.’ He shrugged, looking over the field they past. ‘For all I know you are spying and here I am spilling all the details.’ He joked, winking aside to her. He had a good eye, certainly the people he was a lot around he knew the best and was quite certain they weren’t spying for the ‘enemy’.
They came on the main road back to the village and Haskell grabbed Freyja with her shoulder when a rider came by on a rather high speed. He let her go when the road was clear before he started walking again. He looked aside to her when she spoke and slowly nodded. ‘I’m pretty sure. Do you know the story?’ He asked shaking his head. ‘She is two years older than me, I saw her, training when I went trading with my father. She was fierce, never giving up, never backing down. Halfdan came and killed her father for every villager to see. He kept her mother, raped her and killed her brutally after.’ He told her, slowly looking back to the road. ‘If that would happen with my parents I would come back. So yes,’ he nodded, looking aside to Freyja. ‘she is coming. Only if is to kill that earl.’ He muttered in his own thoughts. It was his task to fight alongside of Halfdan and he would but it would be a strange fight, he imagined.
She noticed his teasing and a bright smile came on his lips while he chuckled. ‘I don’t know, so much good looking men here in Skagen worth following.’ He teased further, giving her a little push with his elbow. But the thoughts of having Freyja there would be good, every raid needed a ship builder. When she stated that she would give him an answer shortly he shook his head. ‘You don’t need to give me one. Just keep it in mind, when I come again and I ask, I will need one.’ He explained. He could build on her, just as he could build on Vern or Hakon, there weren’t much people here in Skagen he could fully trust. When she asked when it was all going the happen he shrugged, looking to the houses that started surrounding them. ‘I’m going to sail to Kattegat with Hakon and a few of the men first, to meet Harald there. We gonna see if we can raid together with them, so this are just plans but,’ he putted his hands shortly up. ‘Halfdan can change his mind quickly, if an opportunity comes along.’ He followed. He stepped a little behind her when a farmer pasted by with a herd of sheep’s. ‘Until then we are all rather safe and sound.’ He promised her with a wink, at least being comforting. He was used to this talk, for her it could maybe be a little overwhelming.

While Freyja had been seriously thinking about all the people she knew in Skagen, which was most of the people in Skagen, Haskell was being his normal self, and teasing her again. She laughed outloud when he said she could be a spy. “Yes, you caught me. I spend all of my time at the docks though, so I guess I’m not a very good spy,” she told him with a grin. While they could tease, because she was fairly confident that he was not the spy he was looking for, and she knew he didn’t actually believe she could be a spy, she was still going to have this in the back of her mind whenever she interacted with anyone she wasn’t very close to in the near future.
Haskell pulled her out of the way when a rider came by quickly. She’d heard the rider, but hadn’t realized how quickly he was coming by until he was practically on top of them. “Thanks,” she told him, before smiling and nudging him with her shoulder. “I almost died!” she added, grinning at her own exaggeration.
Listening as Haskell told the story of what happened to the old earl and his family, she silently wondered how he could be so fiercely loyal to someone like that. One reason Freyja had been glad that two of her four sisters had decided to become shield maidens was so she didn’t have to worry as much about such a fate befalling them. Of course, it could still happen to anyone, but a woman who could defend herself and wasn’t afraid to kill was not as pleasant a target. Honestly, she’d been thinking about talking to Visna & Tóra about them learning to defend themselves, and this was just further proof that she needed to have that talk soon.
She nodded after he finished, saying that Gunnvor would return, even if only to try to kill Halfdan. Freyja really couldn’t blame her, though she didn’t share that opinion with Haskell. If someone had murdered her father and then raped and murdered her mother, Freyja would want her revenge as well. “Well, hopefully she’s preoccupied with Skagerrak for a while.” It would be different if something happened to Sofie or Rúna while they were in England, or Frankia, or anywhere else they went to raid, but she didn’t want her sisters to get hurt defending someone like Halfdan.
She laughed again, thankful the discussion had changed once more. “Yes, that’s true, I’m sure I could find someone else to follow.” Honestly, Freyja rarely paid attention to that sort of thing. Finding a man was very low on her list of priorities at the moment, and other than Haskell, she could only think of two men in Skagen around her age anyway; Hakon and Sithric, both of whom were also friends of hers. She didn’t need to be thinking about any of her friends like that.
Nodding again, she knew this was something she’d need to seriously think about. She didn’t know when the next raid would be; Sofie and Rúna could already be shield maidens by then, which meant there would be no one home to protect their mother, Visna & Tóra if Freyja joined them. But, did she really want to miss such an opportunity? And like Haskell had said, there was always the chance that Halfdan wouldn’t even give her a choice. “I will think on it,” she repeated, wanting him to know she was serious about it.
“You’re going to Kattegat? With Hakon?” She thought about the pair of them getting up to trouble in the other village and smiled. “Have fun,” she told him with a grin. They both deserved to have a little more fun in their lives, even if they were going on official business. She’d never been to Kattegat, but was certain she’d make it there eventually. She was in no rush.
“Don't cause too much trouble. But don’t worry, I’ll keep an eye on things while you’re gone,” she promised, winking at him when she was unable to keep a straight face. They were getting closer to her house, and Freyja was a bit sorry when she realized it. She’d been having fun talking and teasing Haskell, and decided she really needed to keep in touch with him better in the future.
“Another of my sisters has decided to begin fighting,” she mentioned, not sure if Sofie or even Rúna would have had much of a chance to interact with him yet. “I want to apologize right now for whatever trouble she gives you. She’s… quite a handful.” Looking back at him, she grinned when she added, “Not like me, of course.” Freyja could be a handful when she wanted to be, especially when she’d been younger, but not at all in the same way as her younger sister.
