| Aleinn had kept his eyes trained on the horizon, hand shielding the last bits of sun as it was beginning to fade. It was foolish to be here on the beach, waiting and looking. He couldn’t help it though. It was part of his weekly routine, granted not as much as it once was. He used to be here everyday when he could, waiting to see if the familiar fishing boat his father once owned pulled up onto the beach. He knew it wasn’t going to appear deep down or it would have already.
He wasn’t sure why he still did it, maybe it was because there was no concrete proof his father was gone. His own optimistic heart kept him hopeful that his father could still be out there living in some other village unable to get back to them. The why he couldn’t was constantly changing from the loss of his boat to illness or even being permanently disfigured and unable to sail.
He always kept his distance to try to make it seem like he wasn’t that pathetic kid with the missing father who was still waiting for him. He didn’t need the pity or the stares or even worse the questions about what the ship building apprentice was doing here.
He watched as the boats came in one by one until they had all docked, not seeing the boat he was looking for he turned to head home. He wasn’t disappointed anymore. He expected this, but he still hoped that maybe one day he’d be wrong.
He imagined Henrik would have beaten him there since he made a stop along the way. He was proven right as he walked through the door to see his brother the second he walked through the door. He nodded at him in greeting.
“Got a minute?”

| Henrik had had a long day. He usually woke up early to run any errands he had, and then spend the morning training, and finally relaxed and spent the afternoon in the company of one of his few friends, before heading home to see his brother. He liked his routine. He didn’t lead an exceptionally interesting life, but that was fine with him. Interesting people got into trouble, and Henrik definitely preferred to avoid trouble.
He wasn’t surprised when he arrived home before Aleinn. He knew his brother liked to linger down near the docks sometimes. Henrik didn’t know for sure why the nineteen year old did that, but didn’t think too hard on it, because he didn’t want confirmation that the reason he suspected was the actual reason. He was okay not knowing for certain. Plus, for all he knew, Aleinn had met a girl he liked to meet near the docks every afternoon. At least, that's what Henrik kept telling himself.
Once home, he quickly put together some food, expecting his brother to wander through the door shortly, and made himself comfortable. He wasn’t kept waiting long.
Henrik raised an eyebrow when Aleinn asked if he had a minute, not certain what his brother would want to talk about. “Of course. I didn’t notice you training earlier?” he added, more of a question than a comment. If Aleinn wanted to rise in rank and be allowed to join him on raids, he needed to train, and hard. Haskell, the Radningar, wouldn’t let Aleinn slide or go easy on him just because he and Henrik were friends now. “How was your day?” he wondered, before biting into the food in front of them. |

| "About that," he said, when his brother mentioned to him not seeing him training today. He thought he should just get it over with and not draw it out. He was nervous even though he knew Henrik probably wouldn't care that he'd changed his mind about what he wanted to do, but he didn't know that with 100% certainty which caused some doubts to enter his mind. He pushed those thoughts away though and forced himself to remain calm. Everything is going to be okay. It always is. "I got an apprenticeship with Freyja building ships. I don't think I'm cut out for fighting"
He really wasn't. Aleinn shied away from all conflict, both verbal and physical. Plus he didn't want to kill anyone. It just felt wrong to him. It was weird enough to think that his brother probably had before. He'd always been good with fixing this or building them so shipbuilding seemed to be the natural thing for him to do.
"It was good." He responded finally to his brother's question about how his day was. "How was yours?" |

| When the first words out of Aleinn’s mouth were ‘about that’ Henrik raised an eyebrow at his brother. He wasn’t sure if this was going to be good or bad news, and was trying to prepare himself for the worst. For someone acutely familiar with bad news, Henrik was having a hard time coming up with anything too bad, as Aleinn was clearly not ill or injured, and therefore couldn’t be in any life threatening danger. Luckily, he wasn’t kept waiting, and Henrik released a sigh when the rest of the news was shared.
Honestly, Henrik wasn’t too surprised at the news. The fact that he’d gone to shipbuilding was surprising, but not that Aleinn didn’t feel he was ‘cut out’ for fighting. He’d never seen in Aleinn what he’d seen in other aspiring warriors; that excitement just before a fight, the drive to push themselves harder, the need to be the best. And the idea that his brother wouldn’t be putting himself in danger was certainly a welcome one. Despite the immense relief he felt at Aleinn’s announcement, he still hadn’t so much as cracked a smile.
“You’ve already talked to Freyja? She’s already accepted?” He didn’t want Aleinn getting excited about an apprenticeship that wasn’t confirmed, but he knew Aleinn was a smart man. It didn’t seem likely he’d make the announcement without confirming all the details. “Is that what you really want to do? Be a shipbuilder?” He couldn’t recall ever having a discussion on the subject, but he certainly didn’t tell Aleinn every thought swimming around in his brain, so it seemed perfectly logical that there was plenty he wouldn’t know about his brother.
Finally, he realized he hadn’t really given his opinion on the matter one way or another. “As long as you’re happy, I’m happy,” he told the younger Andorsson with a nod. Aleinn returned his question and Henrik shrugged at him, “It was fine.” |

| He almost, almost wanted to laugh a bit when Henrik asked him if he talked to Freyja about apprenticing with her. The answer to his question was so obvious. When hadn’t Aleinn thought through things and methodically planned everything out? He always did that. He’d never been impulsive. Henrik had practically drilled into his head since he was nine that he couldn’t do anything stupid ever. He wasn’t about to start now.
“I talked to her about it. She was as happy as Freyja can be about something.” At least that’s how she seemed to him. She was smiling and her sarcastic responses were minimal. He didn’t know her all that well so he couldn’t have been absolutely certain. She seemed like someone that if she was displeased with something you’d know about it straight away.
“It is what I want to do. You know I’ve always been better at building or fixing things than fighting.” The only times he was ever able to get into training was when he was really angry and that was a rarity for him. Henrik had always been the one who was better at it even when they were a lot younger. He’d been the person to teach Aleinn how to throw a punch on those long boring days that they’d spent with their father on his fishing boat waiting for the nets to get full. He longed for those days now.
He let out a breath he didn’t even know he had been holding when hearing Henrik say that if he was happy then he was happy as well. That was so good to hear. In the back of his mind, he knew Henrik wasn’t going to care what he did as long as he wasn’t out and about drawing negative attention to himself. Not that he would have done that anyway. He promised himself when their father disappeared he’d never give Henrik problems, not after all his brother sacrificed for him.
