It was later in the day. Close to the evening actually. It soon would be dark, night would fall. But the village was still lively and would stay lively till late at night. That was a given thing. People would get together, feast, drink, tell stories. Laughter would be heard throughout the village. Ether it would be with friends, family a lover. But it was just not that time jet. He walked through the street still having his cargo with him. Though he already had been able to sell some stuff, or trade it for something Mac wished for. His bags were far from empty and as promised he would not return home before he had sold everything he came here with. It had been a day or two since he arrived and he couldn’t say he was doing bad. But the market how good as it was to sell and trade things. Wasn’t the best place to find someone interested in iron or weapons. Well weapons did well on the market. Iron… well he guessed you had to be a Blacksmith or a shipbuilder or even a jewel maker to be interested in that. So he thought it would be best to visit those in person. As to speak he was headed to one of those places. The blacksmith. The one place he most likely would be able to trade most of his good or sell them. Depending on the blacksmith and what he was interested in. But that wasn’t the only reason why he went to that place first. When he asked one of the villagers the way, they said a name that sounded oddly familiar. He had to dive into his memory to even get a hint from where he heard that name before. But then it had dawned upon him. Svart, he had known a man like that once. A blacksmith apprentice if he remembered correctly. One he had regarded as a friend once as he often saw him when he went about with Mac. But then then man suddenly disappeared one day. Well disappeared was a big word. Mac had said something about it to him. That he had left Uddevalla to travel. He didn’t think Mac ever said which why precicely and as the years went by… He guessed with all that happened it was easy to forget about a person.
But now he was curious to see if what he thought was true. If the blacksmith he was headed to actually was the man he once knew. And he was close to finding out as he could see the shop. He walked up to it and looked around. As any other blacksmith shop there was a big forging fire. A fire that barely ever went out. He stepped in and let go of his backs. Placing them against one of the pillars before he walked deeper into the shop. He looked around and his eyes moved to some of the weapons that lead about. Some seemed to still need to be repaired. Others were perfectly forged. He couldn’t help but pick one of the daggers up and look at it as he walked closer to the fire to get a better look at the blade. He then smiled, simply beautiful. He threw the dagger up and caught it again, before he balanced the tip on one of his fingers. Light, but not too light, the perfect weight. Whoever the smith was, he had goods skills. Skills to be proud of. He smiled again looking over the dagger ones more. Before he walked back to the table and placed it back down. Of course with absolute care. He wouldn’t want to have anything happen to it. Before he looked over the others and let his finger run over some of them. Before he stepped back a bit and looked at the anvil. You could see it had been used a lot. Now that he wasn’t living with Mac anymore and had his own place he did not see the Blacksmith shop as much anymore and he couldn’t help but get a bit of homesick at the sight of it. It had been his home for years and he had to admit it was weird to not hear the sound of the hammer on burning steel every day. He guessed it was a sign that he should visit his father more. He would start doing then when he got back. He looked around once more letting out a hum. Well he guessed he would wait for the man’s return. He walked again to the fire and crossed his arms. Staring into it. ‘They say you can see your future in the fire.’ A story many people believed. He had tried many times to see something. But all he could see were dancing flames. Dancing flames that kept his future hidden.

The news of a trader from Uddevalla had reached the blacksmith earlier that day. The trader had brought a lot of materials, and he had heard he also sold iron. It would be kind of nostalgic for Svart to work with the materials he had learned his skills with. Maybe he could even try melting it together with the iron that was provided by other traders, to make even stronger weapons. But then he had to approach the trader first. And there he was a little bit reluctant. Running away from Uddevalla had sure put him on some kind of wanted list, King Vidar sure didn’t like ‘traitors’, as Björn Ironside would put it. He had ran away with the knowledge he had learned from the King himself, and if he found out Svart was still alive, there might be consequences.
So he had considered asking Ubbe to go buy some iron in his place. He would even give the Prince the right amount of money. But on the other hand, only the blacksmith himself would be able to pick the best pieces of material. Out of experience he could sort out useless chunks. This way, the man had been debating with himself back and forth throughout the day. But then the decision seemed to be taken out of his hands. When he returned to his shop after having dinner, he saw a visitor walking around. Someone he hadn’t seen before in the village.
It had to be the trader. And it would be rude to just leave him there without greeting him. Maybe he was in luck and the man wouldn’t recognise him. He had grown a thicker beard over the years and sure had grown a couple of inches too. ”Good evening”, He said in a friendly way when he approached the figure near the fire. The brightness of the light made it hard for him to distinguish any facial features, so he had no idea if he possibly knew the guy at all.

The fire felt warm on his crossed arms and face as he stared into the dancing flames. Maybe he should return tomorrow? Maybe he had come to late… But then again would the man leave on the fire if he wasn’t to return soon? Svipday closed his eyes. Enjoying the warmth of the fire. It made his muscles relax. Something they needed after a long day of walking and standing and carrying his bags. Halfway through he did realise he might have taken a bit too much stuff with him. Then again it was Mac who had pushed everything in his hands. Sometimes… Just sometimes the man was a little bit too excited for his own good. But that was probably also one of the many reasons why he was so loved by people. He could be a funny guy if he wanted to be. Even if his stern and sturdy features didn’t make it look like he was. Mac really was just a hard stone on the outside, but if you too the break it open you would find a small soft spot in it. What was… adorable if you thought about it long enough. Tough the man himself wouldn’t be happy to hear anything about that at all. His trail of thoughts got interrupted when he heard footsteps behind him. Seemed to be heavy footsteps. Meaning the person wasn’t one of the smallest people out there. He slowly opened his eyes and stared at the fire again as the friendly greeting reached his ears. ”Good evening.” He let out a hum, ”Good evening.” He replied, before turning to the man.
He stared into the man blue eyes. He stood tall out, same height as Svipday himself. Had long blond hair and a thick beard. Made it almost hard to recognise any facial features. But even so, he did recognise some. He couldn’t hide the light amused gleam in his eyes. ”Svart Rauðrsson.” The man who was labelled a traitor by their king. Naturally, you didn’t just leave… Especially not without permission and surely not when you were a civilian of Uddevalla. He wondered if the man would recognise him at all. He had matured a lot naturally. His own dirty blond hair was longer and his beard was fuller as well. ”How long has it been?” He said before walking closer to the man. Letting his eyes travel over his features. Before he frowned and looked the man back in his eyes. ”Huh” he let out. ”You’ve grown old.” After having said that he let out a smile. He also couldn’t supress the light laugh that followed.

Somewhere deep down he was always scared someone would recognise him and alert King Vidar of his whereabouts. The King wouldn’t come look for him in the wilderness. But now he was in a village, a fast growing one, with a lot of trading too. If he found out Svart was ‘hiding’ here, maybe he would send out warriors to have him taken prisoner or even kill him. He had no idea how the King felt about him after he left, but it sure as hell couldn’t be positive. Therefore he approached the trader with some caution, hoping the man wouldn’t pay much attention to his appearance. No one would expect him to be here so that could be in his advantage.
But he was out of luck this time. ”Svart Rauðrsson.” The trader said after looking at him for quite some time. He felt his heart-rate go up. ”How long has it been?” The man then asked. Could it be that they had known each other personally? He had still no idea who he was talking to though. ”Huh” He hummed. ”You’ve grown old.” He then joked, after which he started laughing softly. And then it dawned on him. ”Svip?” He asked in disbelief. Could this man, who honestly almost resembled a bear, be the boy he used to be in training with?

The way the tall man stared at him. Made him believe Svart did not recognise him. And then somewhere it made him think he had made a mistake. After all the one in front him barely even looked like the guy he had known so many years ago. When he was still a younger man and he… Just a boy. But still he believed he wasn’t wrong. Even if much had changed, eyes didn’t change so easily and he did recognise those eyes. He crossed his arms as the man stared at him. Till the disbelieve came on him. ”Svip?” The words seemed to be so hesitant… Well he couldn’t say he didn’t understand. He had changed much over the years as well. He smiled at the man and gave him a silent nod. ”The one and only.” He said soon after. ”I was getting afraid you wouldn’t recognise me.” But again he wouldn’t have and couldn’t have blamed the man if it had been so. After all… How long had it been? 8 years? Longer? He didn’t know exactly. It seemed as if a whole lifetime had passed away since then. Days passed by so fast when you were busy with work. They became weeks and months and if you weren’t careful life would have passed you away without you noticing it. He smiled again to the man and turned back to the fire. He had to say, it was strange to see his old mate again.
”I must say, it’s a nice place you got here.” He soon turned back to the man. Stepping closer to him again and putting a hand on his shoulder. Giving him a small squeeze. ”How have you been?” He couldn’t say he wasn’t curious to the story’s Svart could tell him. He was sure the man had a lot of them. A lot of good ones too. And he wanted to know. If Svart would be willing to share them with him. How nice it would be to share some memories as well. But Svipday had to remember that he hadn’t come here only to see if the man was his mate he once knew. Though he was glad that proved too. He had come here for business and he wouldn’t forget to show Svart the iron he had taken with him. The man was skilled and he was sure he could turn the iron into art. Perfect and strong weapons. It was a shame it was here in Kattegat and not back in Uddevalla. They would have been happy to have a blacksmith as him in town. It was a shame that he seemed to have settled here and shared his art with the… ‘enemy’ as some would say. But now… Svart wouldn’t be able to return. He would be taken as a prisoner or even worse… They would sent him to his death. A traitor he was. And it should be his duty to report this back to their king. He was sure he would be rewarded handsomely for it as well. But.. As Vidar was now, he did not fancy the king or the price he could get.

The fact dat it could be Svipday standing in his shop, so far from Uddevalla, seemed so unreal he couldn’t believe his own eyes. He also had changed so much he didn’t even recognise him. His memories were also a bit hazy, to be honest. After all the things he had seen, after all the people he had met, faces seemed to blur together. But the smile and small nod confirmed it was really the boy he used to know back in his youth. ”The one and only.” The man then said. Svart couldn’t help but laugh softly, partly out of shock but also because he was happy to see his old friend again. If the other man still considered them to be friends. He had no idea how where his loyalties were right now, but he guessed they would be with King Vidar and not with some traitor that had left eight years ago.
”I must say, it’s a nice place you got here.” Svip remarked, after which he put his hand on his shoulder and squeezed softly. ”How have you been?” He then asked. Before answering he pointed at one of the chairs standing in the corner of the shop. ”Please, sit down. We will have a drink first, then we can talk”, He grinned. It also gave him some extra time to think of an answer. He pulled out two cups and a jug of ale. He filled both cups and handed one to Svip. Svart proceeded to sit down too, after which he took a big gulp from his cup.
”I was lucky I could settle here yes. I was running out of money to finance my travels”, He then started his story. He looked around for a second, at the interior of what had become his new workplace. ”I arrived not long ago and took the opportunity to earn some money”, He proceeded. It was the truth. He was known to take the chances as they came by. ”I have been doing great. You would not believe the things I have seen while exploring”, He then said, with a big smile on his face. Talking about his travels always made him excited, for the obvious reason he was simply meant to live like this.

Getting offered a drink what exactly what he had been hoping for. Not that he was much of a drinker otherwise… or let’s say he wasn’t a drinker when he was alone. It was rather boring to drink on your own and the taste of the ale seemed to be less too. Though he was sure that was all in his mind. But in company, in company he couldn’t complain about drinking. In fact he could drink quite a lot before getting drunk and it was even better to have that feeling, fresh ale and good laughs with friends. So he let out a satisfied hum when Svart offered him a drink. Walking to the seat and turning on his heal before sitting down. He was pleased with that too. After all walking around carrying his heavy cargo wasn’t that pleasant after a few hours and much sitting down he didn’t do. He rather go around, because you saw more people that way. So more potential deals. More potential income and so a more pleased Mac. He let out a sigh as he relaxed and got comfortable in the seat before taking the cup from Svart and thanking him for it. He took long big gulps of the ale. It was a pleasing feeling to have the liquid go down his dry throat. He licked his lips after and held the cub with both hands as he started to listen to Svart his ‘story.’ He smiled at the thought of the travels. Seemed like the man in front of him had, had quite an adventure on his own. It was even more pleasing to see the bright look in the man his eyes. It was as if the thought of his travels got him all excited again. Svipday nodded and let out a hum. Not too long ago, so he had been traveling all these time. Things he wouldn’t believe he smiled at the man and sat back a bit. ”Well why don’t you try me out?” He grinned at the man and took another gulp of his cub. Letting out an ‘ah.’ After and snickering lightly. ”I’ve got enough time to hear some of your stories.” And knowing Svart… They were sure to be interesting.
And it he was generally interested in them. He loved traveling just as much. But… with being an Iron miner he hadn’t done that for a while and if he left just off on his own he would be marked a traitor as well. Something… He didn’t feel like doing. Not as much for the king. He respected the king of course, he wasn’t a bad leader. But he wouldn’t be able to leave Mac on his own. Not that Mac wasn’t capable to take care of his own but… he felt it was more some kind of repayment to the man who took him in. After all where would he be without that man? Probably dead and burned or buried 6 feet underground. He also might not have come here to listen to stories, but it had been a while since he had sat down with a friend. ”In return I might tell you some stories of my own.” Though he was sure they wouldn’t be as interesting as Svart’s for sure. But at least he could give the man a good laugh.

Sometimes even he didn’t believe the things he had seen with his own eyes. Some events were clouded in mystery, and as any viking would do, he believed it had to be the work of the Gods. The stories he could tell were always highly entertaining though. Mostly the people that were listening, didn’t believe him, they just laughed at it. But he didn’t mind that. He just laughed with them. ”Well why don’t you try me out?” Svipday grinned. ”I’ve got enough time to hear some of your stories.” He then assured him. The blacksmith shrugged his shoulders lightly and chuckled. ”Alright, just do not call me crazy when I am finished. Cause I would doubt my own sanity again”, He joked. ”In return I might tell you some stories of my own.” The other man then promised, something he was looking forward to. ”I would love to hear your stories as well my friend”, He smiled, happy that he finally had someone to sit down with and drink again.
”Okay, first thing you should know, people who live in smaller towns often have weird rituals and hobbies”, He started of, almost smiling with the thoughts popping in his head. ”Not every village is as.. Sophisticated as Uddevalla”, He chuckled. ”In some fisher village, I think it had no name, it was that small. There the boys who want to become men, they have to try and catch a fish with their bare hands”, He continued. ”So, naturally, I had to dive in and prove myself too”, Svart paused a second to drink some more ale. ”Somehow the fish did not really trust me, I still wonder why, because there were no fish around. I splashed around for a while, still, no fish in sight”, He then continued the story. ”And then it became clear why. An alligator, Svip. I saw its eyes before I could see the rest of his body. He was staring at me, not even blinking, not moving at all. Just staring”, The man shivered with the thought, it went down his spine and he moved a bit closer to the forging fire to feel comfortable again.

he couldn’t help but smile and let out a light hum when his friend asked him not to call him crazy. It made sure to make him get even more comfortable for the story that would come. After all now he had high hopes for it. Even though he didn’t need to have a crazy story to call Svart crazy. To him this man had always been a bit crazy in his own kind of way. Of course he never would call him that in a bad manner. Only to joke. But everyone knew that the best kind of people were the crazy ones. Well at least you could be sure to have one hell of a time with those. Normal would just be a little bit boring, wouldn’t it be? He smiled back at Svart when he said he would love to hear his stories. He wondered about that. How much did Svart want to hear about his homeland? Nothing much had changed really, maybe just the air around and the mentality of the people. But for now everything was still running well. So he could tell the most stupid stories of the most stupid people around. He took another sip of the ale as Svart started talking. You could say Svip was deeply interested in what the man had to say. He would have been hanging from his lip if he actually would be able to do that. He closed his eyes just to imagen what the village and the people living there would have looked like. He could imagen it was a strange sight. The rituals, the habits, the way of living. Everywhere did have something special that made the place one of the kind. He opened his eyes again when Svart said they had to catch fish with their bare hands. That was sure not to be an easy task. He let out a light laugh when his friend said he naturally had to prove himself too. Yes that sounded like the Svart he knew. He would have made a comment and asked the man if he actually could fish. But… He was so into the story that he did not want to disturb the man now.
Svipday leaned a bit closer as the man continued to talk, taking a sip of the ale as he stared at him. His eyes not leaving the man’s fixture, as the expression told him many things as well. He slightly gulped on his ale as Svart said ‘Alligator.’ He whipped some ale from his beard and stared at the man. He saw the shiver. He slightly stared at him in disbelief. But… Who knew a madman sees what he sees. But so does everyone else and who knew where Svart had roamed too. It might just be true. He sat back and laughed slightly. ”And did the brave Svart, go and tame the beast?” He smirk smiled, clear amusement in his eyes. Though he did see Svart being capable to just do it. ”Did you go and catch it with your bare hands?” he was sure it would have been a great sight. Terrifying of course, to have a beast like that stare at you… Did the beast attack. Oh there were many questions he had and he did hope Svart continued his story. He was absolutely enjoying it.

The fact that Svart was allowed to participate in one of the sacred rituals of the clan he was visiting, had meant a lot to him. Some places it was easy to fit in, others it wasn’t. Like here, in Kattegat, where strangers were not as welcome as other places he had visited. The more remote a place was, the easier it seemed to find shelter for a couple of weeks. Everyone was pretty interested in hearing stories about how the world was evolving outside of their own village. Rumours even reached the smallest of towns, and a visitor could either confirm or deny those, and bring new rumours with him. And new stories. Stories like this one, stories he could tell to curious friends over a cup of ale. He saw said ale spilling all over Svip’s beard when he said alligator. The reaction he had expected. It had sure made the impact he had hoped for.
”And did the brave Svart, go and tame the beast?” Svip asked teasingly. ”Did you go and catch it with your bare hands?” He said, urging him to continue. ”A stupid Svart would have, yes. But smart Svart got his ass out of the water as soon as possible”, He laughed heartily. ”Someone once said to me it is wise to pick your battles. Besides, we hunted down the beast later on, when I was safely standing on the shore with a spear and shield in my hands”, He chuckled. It had made a fine meal, totally different than anything he had ever tasted before.

”A stupid Svart would have, yes. But smart Svart got his ass out of the water as soon as possible” He smiled at those words. He guessed it was good that the smart Svart came up that time to get his ass out of there. Because he was pretty sure a struggle with such a beats, if the stories about them were true… Would not have ended well for his friend. But here he was alive and well and able to tell his story to the world. Someone once said to me it is wise to pick your battles. Besides, we hunted down the beast later on, when I was safely standing on the shore with a spear and shield in my hands” He chuckled at those words. He had heard that as well and he was sure that hunt had been a great one. It somewhere got him excited thinking about it. Going on a wild hunt to defeat a beast some might not even believe they were real and just a made up story to frighten the children not to get into the water. It somewhere mad him to go wandering too. Just like he had done as a shield. Though Mac had been at his side and it wasn’t really wandering because they knew exactly where they were going and when they would be back home. He leaned forward again and took another sip of the ale. ”I am happy you’re still alive after such an adventure.” He was sure that his friend had caught the beast, there was no doubt in his mind about that. Svart seemed to be blessed to have gone so far into the world. He somewhere wondered if he would be traveling again after he saved up enough money to fund his adventures. But he would not ask that of the man now. The mood was set in a fun and relaxed manner and talking about the future was in his mind a bit too serious at the moment. He tapped the cub with his fingers slightly. ”Did you eventually prove yourself a man?” That had been the reason why whole that adventure took place didn’t it. Maybe he should come and visit more often to hear more about his travels. Would be a perfect excuse to get out of his own town more. Mac surely wouldn’t mind him going, especially is he could tread and make deals in the same manner. Maybe it was something to think about.

It would have been very impressive if he could have caught the alligator with his bare hands. It’s a one up from a fish, that was for sure. But he would probably have lost his hand if he had tried that. The animal had left him alone, but he was not stupid enough to provoke it. He had been attacked by wild animals enough in his life to know he didn’t want to get it angry. Just as you didn’t want to annoy an aggressive drunk person. At last they had killed the alligator though. And everyone else lived. ”I am happy you’re still alive after such an adventure.” Svipday said, and he nodded in agreement. ”Honestly, there have been many occasions I thought that day I would enter Valhalla”, He replied. It was the truth. But he was not scared to die. He just wanted to live a little bit longer, have more adventures and tell more stories.
”Did you eventually prove yourself a man?” Svip then asked. Svart took the can of ale and refilled the cups again. He took a sip before replying. ”I did yeah, a few days later. The fish came back, and the ritual could be finished. Afterwards there was a feast, and we all got to eat the fish we caught. It tasted better just by knowing how much effort I had to put in”, He said with a grin on his face. ”So, now it is your turn”, He continued, leaning forward a bit towards Svip, to hear him better.

Svart surely wasn’t the only one who had thought he would enter Valhalla. There were some days that came on so un expectedly… That who knew but the gods what would happen to them? What their fate was? Though he was sure death didn’t scare Svart. It didn’t scare him ether but the thought of going to Valhalla already. No it seemed t early for that. How would he be able to face the gods and feast with them as he had died on such a young age. Of course if he died in battle trying to raid or trying to protect Uddevalla then that would be another story. If he died like that then he would be happy. Still life seemed more interesting still as there was still so much to do and to see. So much dreams and goals that he had and that he was planning to fur fill. He smiled hearing that Svart eventually proved himself a man. That was quite an extraordinary thing to hear and he was sure it was even more extraordinary to live through it. And everything tasted more rewarding if you put a lot of effort in it to obtain it. So he was also sure that the fish had tasted like food of the gods for his friend at that time. ”So, now it is your turn” He heard his friend say. Letting out a light ‘Ah’. He had been so concentrated on Svart his story that he didn’t think of one he could tell. Though he would tell one as he had promised he would. There were a few he could think off. Not that anyone of them could match what Svart had seen. But there was one… One he at least would never forget.
He leaned in a bit closer too as his friend had done and took an sip of the ale once more before he started talking. ”I guess I should start by telling you that I haven’t become a blacksmith as Mac wanted me too.” Though the man hadn’t been displeased by what he had chosen to do. ”I wanted to do something that gave me a bit more thrill.” said with a smile, before he looked into the man his eyes. ”So I’ve become an Iron miner, and let me tell you this. Just going under the ground in the dark depths is an adventure on its own my friend.” He really did love the fact that he was able to go underground and dig up those hidden cold treasures the stones hid. In there he got a feeling that he was truly alive. Never knowing what you would find under the rocks or if you would even make it out at the end of the day. It was not unusual for part of the minds to colaps and already enough brave men had given their lives to the black. It was a thrill and the thought of it made him excited. Yes it was hard work, long days but so rewarding. It made you strong too. Between the cold of the stones, the wet air. It was as if they stepped into another world completely. ”Imagen my excitement being trapped between the cold dark tunnels of the minds and the free world. When a bear came into the mine. He looked back at the fire, remembering the day. ”A big black bear, black as the cover of the night. Bigger than any other bear I’ve ever seen Svart.” A bear might be not as mythical as the Alligator. It was common to see one once in a while. But an encounter with one always made up for a good story. Especially when there was nowhere to run too. So his only option had been to fight.
