Sewing, unfortunately, was just a little part of Visna's life. She often had to help her mother when she needed something. Afterall, the brunette was the only one available and ready to help her mother right away. Her older sister, Freyja, was always by the docks or the sea, working on her boats, Rùna and Sofie were constantly training and Tora was just the little one of the family and even though she was younger only by a year, neither Kara nor anyone else used to ask her to buy anything apart from food. In addition, Visna wouldn't let her carry such heavy things, even though she can't exactly carry the broad axe her mom asked for.

The blacksmith was careful and kind enough to hand the axe gently, also explaining to the brunette how she should've carried it from the shop to her home. The axe was big and heavy and the streets were crowded with people walking around and shopping for their own needs.

Visna wished she was allowed to just stop by her mother's shop and leave the giant and heavy axe there, but she also knew that with that big object inside a shop as small as her mother's could've just create a big mess.

A man with two horses was walking in the exact center of the street, forcing the other people to move from the street to the side. That was exactly what Visna was trying to do when her dress got stuck in her own feet and she hit the shoulder of a woman passing by her. Inevitably, the girl fell on the ground, overwhelmed by the axe's weight and the crowd pressure all around her. The big object fell on the ground with a loud thud, cutting through the fabric of the girl's dress and ripping the sleeve right in her upper arm.
With the embarrasment, came a sharp pain. The girl looked at her arm only to learn that her dress was tore apart and there was a huge bleeding cut on her arm.

"Okay Visna, don't panic." She kept repeating the same sentence all over in her head, trying to convince herself that wasn't a big deal, but the pain was too much to handle.
"Ah.." The girl muttered to herself while moving her hand on her arm by instinct. Luckily she was smart enough not to touch the wound with her dirty hands, knowing it would've hurt worse than that.

Haskell

It was the kind of days Haskell didn’t do much other than listening to the endless ramble of villagers while he sat in the great hall. When he looked over to Halfdan the earl was thinking the same thing. Haskell was chewing on a piece of bread, sitting on a table with his feet on the actually spot to sit. He looked for a moment aside to Harald who sit beside him, all measuring the asks or needs of those villagers. They took this village some time ago, Haskell saw it happen and dedicated himself in helping on protecting him. Few of those villagers hated Halfdan for taking it and that was something easily written on their faces. Haskell looked the old man left before pointing his attention back to Halfdan, all getting to the serious business of the day, raiding plans. Haskell loved moments as these, sitting around with ale and food, discussing the lands they could take, the risk it behold. Not teaching all the time was a certain change on what he was used to. He had a day off, not that he had a schedule to begin with. But he promised himself on seeing some friend and looking around for a horse he maybe could buy.

This time of the day the streets were crowned, Haskell with his good build and sword on his back got recognized easily but not all the people had the luck. Most seemed to be bumping against each other, certainly when somebody walked through with some horses. He pulled a child into safety and looked how the man passed, shaking his head in the progress of it. The little man he pulled in safety looked with big eyes towards the horses. ‘You alright little men?’ Haskell asked with a smile. He nodded, running of and Haskell followed him, until his eyes caught the side of a axe, a blooded axe. It was his instinct, always, blood was danger or a wound. He pushed away from the side and walked over to the other side of the street, looking from the axe to the bleeding cute in a girl her arm. ‘That looks,’ he cut his words off as soon as he saw her face. ‘You are a sister of Freyja, right?’ He stated, lifting the axe from the ground into his belt so it couldn’t hurt anybody else. But which one. He had trained Freyja for a very long time, she had a lot of sisters, getting them right by name was something else. ‘Sofie?’ He guessed, looking to the cut in her arm, carefully resting his hand under her elbow for support. ‘Visna?’ He guessed further, looking to the cut, he made a painful face and grabbed to his own tunic, tearing a piece loose. He looked up, she was rather pale. ‘You alright?’ He asked, trying to distract her from the wound … because it was a serious one and he could knew it out of experience.

All Visna wanted was to completely disappear from the Earth and for that sharp pain to go away. She never really experienced pain in her life, just few needle shots and this was far worse than a needle shot.

Few moments later, Visna heard a male voice getting closer to her. Suddenly the axe was lifted up from the ground and the girl panicked a little bit, thinking someone wanted to steal it. She followed the axe with her gaze and then brought it to this stranger’s face, while he was asking if she was one of Freyja’s sisters. ”So he knows Freyja.” She thought, a little relieved and then just nodded at his question. She tried to smile at him but the only thing that came when she tried to move was pain. The girl looked at his face thoroughly, knowing that she had seen him before somewhere else. But where?

The man was now next to her, looking at her wound and carefully supporting her arm by the elbow. ”Sofie?” Visna furrowed her eyebrows and shook her head. ”I’m not Sofie, I’m Vis-” She was interrupted by him saying her name, then she nodded. ”Yes, Visna.” The girl inhaled through her teeth and squeezed her eyes shut when another wave of sharp pain ran through her arm.

While her eyes were closed, Visna heard the sound of something getting ripped. ”That’s fabric.” She thought. She could recognise that sound literally everywhere. The girl instinctively opened her eyes and looked where the sound came from, just to see a piece of his tunic that had been ripped off. His voice questioning her once again, got her out from her thoughts. ”Sorry? Uhm, yes, yes! I’m alright.” She answered, a little confused. Her head was spinning and she felt like her blood was running out from her face. Cold sweat suddenly formed on her forehead, and Visna knew she was going to pass out, but she didn’t want to. The girl shut her eyes closed and breathed in deeply and slowly, hoping that she could manage not to panic since that could've made the situation worse.

Haskell

You had just persons that were equipped on handling a weapon on streets. Haskell was used to it, gave him ten and he would still manage on protecting everybody who walked around. He had other things he wouldn’t be handling so great but you wouldn’t see it handling him in public either way. This girl put herself and others in extreme danger and still the cut in her arm was the only thing that got his attention … and the fact she had a recognizable face. It wasn’t that they met before, he knew by the look that she was a sister of Freyja and because of that knew a few a thing or two about them. Guessing which one was a different story. Haskell had good memories, so it couldn’t be that hard to remember the names Freyja often had talked about, even if it was already years ago.

The cut was to deep and to ugly to leave it like this so his mind was working harder than his hands on the moment, knowing that her blood loose could cause her to drop down. Keeping her talking was one of his tactics, despite he truly didn’t knew he who she was of the sisters. She protested a little but then he guessed right and he shortly smiled, looking up to her pale face. When she squeezed her eyes shut he looked back up to her. ‘Try to keep alert enough Visna, talk, look at me, don’t focus on the wound.’ He supported her. Yes, he was in battle and he saw way to much. So he knew how to handle this as much as he knew how to chop off an arm. Not that this would be the case off course.'I'm Haskell, learned your big sister fight, I don't know if she talked that much about fighting.' He said, keeping her attention in some way.

He wrapped a piece of fabric around her arm, knowing it would hurt because he tied it with pretty much pressure to stop the bleeding. When he asked she was alright she hardly answered right away, confused even and he knew that came because of the blood loss. When she answered he just nodded. ‘We need to get you inside and down on a chair before you,’ his words faded a little as he saw her breath in deeply, trying to hold on her consciousness. He wrapped his arm around her waist, ready to catch her if she would drop down. ‘Visna?’ He asked for her attention. Luckily his didn’t lived that far of from here and had he everything laying around to help her. ‘It isn’t far, just the street over to that house.’ He pointed helping her forward. His attention all pointed on her, if she would weaken he would lift her in the air before she could even drop down.

Kara needed the axe and even though Visna didn’t know what for, she didn’t hesistate when her mother asked her to go to the blacksmith to take it and bring it home. She spent her whole life helping her mother and this time wasn’t any different from the others. Except for the fact that she was carrying an actual weapon and she could’ve hurt someone else instead of herself. If she ended up hurting someone, she would’ve probably spent her whole life thinking again about her actions, never forgiving herself. In a way, she was glad no one else got hurt.

She couldn’t see how bad her wound was nor how bad she was bleeding, but the man next to her sounded pretty serious when he told her to try to stay awake. After squeezing her eyes once more, she opened them only to look at him. Her vision was blurry at first but started adjusting within seconds. Visna blinked a few times and tried to focus on something other than the sharp pain, as the man told her to. 'I'm Haskell, learned your big sister fight, I don't know if she talked that much about fighting.' The man said again, giving her another thing to focus on. She remembered seeing him somewhere and his name was definitely familiar, but she couldn’t remember if it was because of Freyja talking about him or if some of her friends were just talking about how good looking he was while he was passing by.

Another wave of pain hit her when he wrapped the fabric of his tunic around her arm. The girl whined lightly, the fabric was too tight, but she just assumed that it was to stop the bleeding. Her forehead was furrowed in pain, but she tried to relax her features, not wanting Haskell to worry too much, if that was even possible at that point. She slowly got up with the man’s help that grabbed her firmly. She definitely wasn’t going to pass out right now, she didn’t want to, but she was sure that the man wasn’t going to let her touch the ground if she did. This certainty helped her relaxing a bit. Haskell called her by her name once again and she hurried to give him an answer. ”Yes, I can do it.” She managed to say in a whisper, but nodded firmly to let him know they could go ahead.

Haskell

They all had the same expressions somewhere, you couldn’t miss an Stafnsdottir when it pass on the street, you could only miss in their name and ages because there were a lot of them. Haskell was always on only child, his parents were rather old when they grew pregnant of Haskell. Getting children was hard for them; certainly for his mother who wanted so much more than only that one son. But he made them proud in the best way he could. He worked hard, fought hard and tried on still being there for them. But the fact was, they lived there on their little farm far outside the village and he lived here, close to Halfdan and the others. So he didn’t saw them that much, maybe he was a terrible son.

Introducing himself to her probably was needed for she looked at him a little dizzy and without any focus. On the other side he did it to keep her attention pointed towards something that wouldn’t get her on passing out. He learned Freyja to fight, that had at least have to count for something. But Visna was so wrapped up in her pain and staying awake that she didn’t answer to anything he said. So he just got her up and wrapped an arm around her in the hopes she would make it to where he lived.

When she whispered that she could do it he smiled. ‘Good to hear.’ He replied. Warriors needed to tame their pain, they needed to bite through it. Although she maybe never would be one, she had to learn. Only the true Vikings lived through the battles and the pains, he could talk about it, he had enough scars to prove it. Lucky for him he never got so badly wounded that Valhalla would great him. He took part of her weight on him by supporting her while he leaded her over the street to that one house. He pushed the door open with his foot and leaded her in right to one of the chairs. For her this should have been the longest walk. ‘Sit down.’ He gestured, helping her down before he pulled his blade belt over his shoulder and laid it with the blade in it on the table. He pulled the axe out to and got a bucket of cold water. His house didn’t present much, sober in fact. Aside for weapons there wasn’t much here. He grabbed some box and placed it on the table before he took a chair and placed it before Visna. ‘You gonna hate me more when this is over.’ He stated, sitting down and gesturing to her arm. ‘But this needs cleaning and some strong herbs, if you want to keep it.’ He pointed over her arm. He never lied, in fact, he was way to honest, even now. He carefully took the fabric away and at least it wasn’t bleeding that much again. He pushed a cloth under the cold water and looked up to her. ‘Are you gonna be like your sister? A fighter?’ He asked curious, carefully pushing the ice cold cloth against the wound. ‘Sorry.’ He muttered, softly cleaning it. He wanted to be tender but he was a man, only his rough fingers made it impossible to be gentle, but he tried.

When Visna heard that this man taught her sister how to fight, she immediately knew she could trust him. He probably had seen many wounds like the one she had now, maybe even worse than that. He knew what to do. That was what the girl kept repeating in her mind.

”Good to hear” Visna didn’t hear those words clearly, but she still managed to grasp the meaning. She replied with a weak smile and started walking, leaning on him every few steps. Luckily their sizes were a lot different so she wasn’t too heavy for him to carry. While walking, the girl started wondering how Haskell or other vikings reacted to pain when they were fighting. If this man was there, helping her in that moment, he probably never acted like she was doing. A second of distraction, a second of weakness, could’ve mean losing their life. Apparently, Visna wasn’t strong enough to carry the pain, but she was still trying to fight back. She didn’t give up.

The both of them entered through a door which didn’t look familiar to the girl’s blurred vision. Visna sat down as he told her to do and breathed deeply with her eyes closed once again, glad that she could now rest a little. ‘You gonna hate me more when this is over.’ His voice woke her up. The girl opened her eyes, finally able to focus her eyesight and clearly see him. He was pointing at her arm while talking. ‘But this needs cleaning and some strong herbs, if you want to keep it.’ Her eyes went wide open at those words. Now she could lose her arm? She was trying her best not to panic too much. Luckily the man started working on healing her wound without her saying anything, so she just closed her mouth and gritted her teeth, trying to bare the pain when he started taking away the cloth of fabric he tied on her arm before.

The cloth he put on her arm right after stung a bit, but it was nothing compared to the pain she felt when she cut herself with that stupid weapon. Also, the cold water felt like a blessing from the Gods on her boiling skin. ‘Are you gonna be like your sister? A fighter?’ He asked and Visna huffed slightly and shook her head with a half smile on her lips. ”As you can see, I can’t stand pain.” The girl stopped talking when his hands pushed too hard on her arm and shut her eyes. ’Sorry.’ He apologised immediately and the girl opened her eyes again, giving him a grateful look. ”I work at my mother’s shop. I make dresses.” She continued ignoring the pain. ”Thank you.” Visna then said out of the blue. She really was thankful. He didn’t had to help her. He probably had his things to do, but he was now stuck with a weary and weak teen who couldn’t even carry an axe.

Haskell

The truth about a real warrior always came out of failure, so did the potential. You didn’t learned out of your victories, you learned out of your mistakes. Visna was walking with an axe, unexperienced and she would probably remember this and learn a thing or two out of it. But was more important was the way she handled it. Haskell was afraid she would drop down in his arms while he leaded her over to his house but by his surprise she didn’t. He wasn’t a judger but when he saw her standing there he imagined her with an armor and a sword and the picture just didn’t fit. It was to her to prove him wrong if she wanted that. But given she focused on the walk over and tried on doing the best she could she already did in a way. Fainting was easy, certainly with this blood loss and cut but she stayed up and walking. And that just said more about her determinacy then she may understood herself. That was what battle was all about, surviving. It was one of Haskell his main lessons in training, survive the worst and you may live the day to tell.

When he dropped her down on the chair she breathed out in relief. He tugged up the corner of his lips and started on assembling the things he needed to treat that wound before he would need to do more. He saw her eyes drop so he talked again, catching her attention so she won’t drift to far off in the pain. That was why he said she could loose her arm. A slight amused smile came on his lips when he saw the shock in her arm. ‘We aren’t that far yet.’ He winked. ‘Don’t tell Freyja I said this.’ He followed in a slight joke, sitting down while looking to the wound. Part of his hair laid over his shoulder and he stroke it away before pushing the cold cloth against the cut, she didn’t move. He looked for a moment up from underneath his eyelashes to her, checking if she was alright without saying a word, keeping on cleaning, making sure of it no dirt would stay behind.

When he asked her the question she immediately huffed, what cause him to chuckle slightly. She didn’t had to give an answer for him to know it. ‘You do go.’ He reacted on those words. ‘You lost a lot of blood, I thought you would already have passed out.’ He followed honestly, bringing his head closer to take a better look to the wound. When she talked further he sat more up. ‘Freyja told me, nice to do it, securing your mothers work.’ He nodded, dropping his cloth back in the water. He thought it was good, knowing he didn’t do it for his parents that farm would die away after they died. It saddened him, those thoughts but he tried on ignoring it just like usual. His eyes went to the axe, nodding. ‘Does your mother needs an axe now to cut dresses?’ He joked with a neutral kind voice. He got up for a moment, grabbing a boil to crush the herbs in. When she thanked him he turned around to her, shrugging. ‘It’s my job, besides,’ he stopped and sat back down, studying the herbs while mixing them into the bowl. ‘Freyja would try on killing me if she find out I saw you helpless and didn’t do a thing.’ He smiled shortly, pointing his direction back to the wound. ‘These a herbs to help you with the infection and the pain. The blood loss you will have to sleep off, or at least take it easy.’ He studied her face for a moment. ‘Don’t walk around with weapons you can’t handle Visna.’ He begin, looking back to the axe. ‘Is it from Hakon?’ Would Hakon send her away with an axe knowing she didn’t knew how to handle it? Probably not, still he asked. He laid his fingers on each side of the cut and pulled it a little open, knowing it would hurt he hurried up on pushing the herbs into it …

Only use your weapons. [Haskell] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Only use your weapons. [Haskell] Only use your weapons. [Haskell] EmptyWed Nov 29, 2017 10:52 pm

Visna didn’t expect this first meeting to be so… tragic. She always wanted to meet the people that fought and trained beside her sister when she was younger, but she never had the chance to do so. Now she was in front of the man that taught her all she knew about battles, weapons and fighting, but she wasn’t exactly in the conditions she thought she would be when she dreamed about meeting him. The girl had always been fascinated about strong warriors, men and women being able to fight for their lives, their villages and their beliefs, she admired them. That’s why she felt a lot embarrassed once she learned he was a warrior as well. She was giving him the best example she could give of the reason why not everyone was a warrior.

She was trying to regain her senses when he said she was going to lose her arm if he hadn’t cleaned it fast. Now the girl was all awake and terrified. ‘We aren’t that far yet.’ VIsna exhaled loudly and her shoulders dropped down in relief. She looked at him in the exact moment he winked at her. ”Woah… He looks good. She thought reflexively. Her sister was pretty lucky to have him as her instructor. When he said Freyja’s name Visna’s cheeks got a little bit red. She somehow felt like he was listening to her thoughts about her sister and really got embarrassed about them right away. Everything in his movements looked appealing. His hair falling down his shoulder, him scrolling them away, his gaze directed towards her right under his eyelashes… ”I can’t believe Freyja didn’t even tried to hook up with this guy. I must ask her.” She said in her mind as if it was the most important matter in that moment.

Her thoughts were really helping her not thinking about the pain, but the man asked her another question and she had to answer. When she said she couldn’t stand pain, he surprisingly said she was able to endure the pain pretty well, given the fact she didn’t pass out yet. The girl took in the compliment and then explained him what she did for a living. He looked satisfied with the answer. He said that Freyja told him about her already and Visna didn’t really know how to react to the fact that her sister talked about her with other people. She was proud of doing her mother’s job, but it wasn’t just because of that, that she was doing it. ”I really like it. She said with a soft smile on her lips. She wanted him to know she was happy with her choice, even though she didn’t really have a reason why she wanted that.

‘Does your mother needs an axe now to cut dresses?’ The man then said, causing Visna to laugh lightly. The girl shook her head and raised her shoulders briefly. ”I honestly do not know why she needs it.” She then said, laughing again and rolling her eyes. She then immediately thanked him for what he was doing for her. ’It’s my job, besides,’ He started. ‘Freyja would try on killing me if she find out I saw you helpless and didn’t do a thing.’ The girl huffled at those words and nodded slightly. ”Are you afraid of her?” She then said with a smirk and raised an eyebrow at him.

The man then explained why he was putting the herbs on her wound and then told her to take the rest of the day to rest. Visna’s plans didn’t exactly include resting. She wanted to bring the axe home as fast as possible in order to get back to the shop and work. She felt Haskell’s gaze piercing her mind, as if he was trying to read her thoughts once again. ‘Don’t walk around with weapons you can’t handle Visna.’ Her eyes instantly moved to look at him into her eyes. What he was saying was true, but she was sure she could handle that. She wanted to handle that, but in the end, she wasn’t strong enough to do so. ‘Is it from Hakon?’ He then asked. Visna immediately shook her head. She knew Hakon was a friend of her sister and he would’ve probably helped her carrying that weapon. Her thoughts were interrupted by a sharp pain on her arm. She didn’t realise that he was touching the wound again until he pulled the cut open and finally put the herbs into it. The girl shut her eyes closed, moaning with her teeth gritted. Her head started spinning, and she felt her blood rushing away from her face, then darkness.

Only use your weapons. [Haskell] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Only use your weapons. [Haskell] Only use your weapons. [Haskell] EmptySat Dec 02, 2017 2:21 pm

Haskell

In a way he always confronted others with the worse case scenario, in her situation it was loosing her arm. He was always way to straight forward, what made him a good judge of character, he wasn’t a liar and he didn’t soften the situation. But in this case his eased her thoughts a little, saying they weren’t that far yet for she was really panicking about it. She could loose her arm … in time. If he didn’t had seen her and the cut she would maybe just walk home and try to cure it herself. If that got infected she would get sick, the infection would spread through her arm, she wouldn’t be able to move it probably and before she knew it a healer would chop it off and that … was a life dead situation he didn’t want to put her through. She was still so young, a beautiful young girl trying to live in this cruel world, she needed both her arms if she wanted to survive. So yes, maybe she was lucky that he saw it, otherwise … he hoped that somebody else would have noticed it.

Visna confirming she did the job with love made him nod in approval for a moment. Everybody had his destiny, his was to be a farmer before the gods leaded him to warrior paths and he ended up here, one of the most close people to Halfdan the earl. In a way he always tried on leading people to their true destiny. He thought about Freyja, how she stopped fighting to become a ship builder. First he had thought she was forced to, in a way she was. But seeing how good she did it know the gods had guidance her to further destinations.

When he asked why her mother needed that axe she didn’t had a clear answer to it. He leaned back for a moment, with a questioning look. He turned his head and looked towards the axe. ‘But it is for her?’ He asked to be safe. What did a dressmaker need an axe for? In a way he wanted to know it, because he found it to be strange. Maybe he should pay her mother a visit. In a way Haskell loved to find those things out, investigate crimes committed all over Skagen, not that he was accusing her mother for something, he was just compelled on getting the truth. ‘I will bring her the axe myself, it’s a nice weapon and it shouldn’t be cared my somebody like you. Do you know how to fight? Defense yourself?’ He asked curious. The way she carried the axe was the way she got injured in the first place. Given she had an elder sister that had fought he thought that she maybe lectured her other sisters about it. But apparently not. ‘No.’ He answered with a smile when she asked if he was afraid of Freyja. ‘But she is a woman,’ he stated with a amused grin. ‘they are tricky and unpredictable.’ He said with a promising look. He didn’t had the pleasure yet on meeting a woman’s fury but he saw it coming around and it was just shocking what a woman had up her sleeve.

When he returned on her wound he asked of the axe came from Hakon, but it wasn’t. Like he thought Hakon wouldn’t give a weapon to a girl who couldn’t handle one. Haskell turned his eyes back to the wound, opening it a little so the herbs would reach each side of her wound. It wasn’t a pleasurable feeling, she turned pale on the pain. Just as he looked up he saw her eyes close and she slipped away. ‘Visna.’ He grabbed her at her shoulder before she could fall from the seat she sat on. Haskell signed, shaking his head before grabbing her behind her knees and shoulders and lifted her up. ‘I thought you would be tougher then this.’ He whispered, carrying her over to the bed he had, laying her down. He couldn’t do much about it so he started bandaging her arm so everything was done before she would wake again. He stood up, looked for a short moment over to her before he chuckled and left her to rest out while he cleaned up the things he used to treat her wound.

Only use your weapons. [Haskell] Empty
PostSubject: Re: Only use your weapons. [Haskell] Only use your weapons. [Haskell] EmptyWed Dec 06, 2017 8:02 pm

Visna couldn’t really understand why Haskell looked so proud with the fact that she worked at her mother’s shop. She could feel his approval, but it wasn’t something she did to have others’ approval. She loved her job and she chose it by herself and for herself. Wasn’t his situation the same? Didn’t he choose to fight because he wanted to? His attitude towards that matter tickled the girl’s curiosity, but she decided not to ask him anything. She had just met him and just didn’t want to be rude, so she kept her questions to herself.

As for Haskell, on the other hand, he started questioning her about the axe and who was it for. She really didn’t know why her mother asked her to take such a weapon home, but she just assumed it was to cut woods. ‘But it is for her?’ Visna nodded and shrugged her shoulders. ”I guess she needs it to cut woods for the winter?” She said as if it was a question, even though it really wasn’t. ‘I will bring her the axe myself, it’s a nice weapon and it shouldn’t be cared my somebody like you.’ The man then offered his help and Visna agreed with a firm nod. ’Do you know how to fight? Defense yourself?’ He continued and the girl lowered her shoulders, embarrassed. Of course she didn’t know because she thought she never really need to learn how to fight. ”I am working on it.” She said with a low voice. He was a fighter and she was afraid he couldn’t help but judge her for being weak, since she couldn’t even carry an axe without nearly kill herself. Freyja was completely different than her, she was strong and knew how to fight, it was a strong comparison that Visna hoped he wouldn’t make.

The smirk that formed on her lips when she asked him if he was afraid of her sister, was soon returned when he smiled, denying the fact that he was afraid of her. ‘But she is a woman,’ Another attractive grin formed on his lips. ‘they are tricky and unpredictable.’ Visna felt by some means empowered by those words. She wasn’t very tricky or unpredictable, but knowing that a man like Haskell could somehow feel threatened by those characteristics, made her feel a little stronger than before. ”I’m a woman too.” She stated raising an eyebrow and smirking back at him.

Their conversation was taking a nice turn, they were laughing and she didn’t even think about the pain and about the reason why she was there with him in the first place. He was cleaning her wound diligently, with firm and knowing hands, but as soon as he touched it, a stronger pain rushed through her whole body and she just gave up to it. Before blacking out, she heard his voice calling her name and then felt a pair of strong arms reaching her shoulders. ‘I thought you would be tougher then this.’ It felt extremely weird, because she was somehow still able to hear everything that was being said around her, she could feel his arms grabbing her body and carrying her somewhere, but everything was extremely confused and she couldn’t open her eyes. It felt like a far away dream that she did her best to scroll away.

She didn’t know how much time had passed after she passed out, but she found herself laying down on a bed, in a room she didn’t recognise. It took her few seconds to remember where she was and why she was there. ”Haskell?” She tried to call his name since he wasn’t in the room with her, but all that came out was a raspy and confused sound. Visna cleared her throat. ”Haskell?” The girl called again. ”Much better.” She thought.

Haskell

Haskell listened to her words, slowly looking over to the weapon … to cut wood for the winter, with that? It could be but the details on the axe were in a way to detailed to be used for cutting down trees and splitting wood. Visna didn’t know much about weapons, so much was true so his questions was one out of curiosity. He believed she should learn, just like everybody should learn how to defend themselves, especially woman. Her reaction was one out of embarrassment and Haskell lowered his head a little so he could look at her as she tried to look down. ‘There is no shame in that Visna.’ He encouraged her. In his eyes everybody needed to learn, but that was because he was a fighter before anything else. For him there was nothing else then fighting and raiding. Not everybody wasn’t the same. Not because Freyja was one of the best fighters he had trained that she needed to be that to. ‘I don’t want you to be like me, or Freyja, or every shield maiden around here, I want you to be safe.’ He followed, generally caring about her. He pointed to the wound. ‘So that wouldn’t happen again but better, so you know what to do in times of need.’ He followed, again with an encouraging smile. Nobody could what another do, she was lucky to have a sister like Freyja, for he knew she was the one helping her sisters out in self-defense.

When he spoke about the ways woman could be, unpredictable and sharp in a way she stated immediately that she was a woman to. Haskell smiled, letting his head hang forward before chuckling softly. ‘Yes you are.’ He nodded, stroking his hand over his forehead before looking back to her. ‘And I’m sure men will tremble under your qualities on being a woman.’ He leaned back, shaking his head again. He wouldn’t be that men, Visna was so much younger then him, she didn’t had the right amount of influence, not like Freyja sometimes had. ‘So don’t take it as a weakness, that you are a woman.’ He winked, making her feel good. Halfdan often saw women as slaves, beings he could use. But that wasn’t for Haskell, for him they were as much equal in the words as he was. Offcourse … she passed out not much after that, making him smile, she still had to learn so much.

He had laid her in his bed until she came by a little while he was cleaning up all the things up he used to make that wound better looking. It took her a while to come by and Haskell was outside chopping wood when he heard his name. He stroke his arm over his forehead and walked back inside, seeing her laying with her eyes open. He grabbed a cup from the table and walked over to her, offering her the water. ‘Welcome back.’ He smiled, looking to her bandage. ‘How do you feel?’ He asked. Stupid question but he wanted to know if it wasn’t more then feeling weak.

Haskell was extremely kind and immediately offered to carry the broad axe to Visna’s home himself, but that left a bittersweet taste in the girl’s mouth. She was supposed to do it by herself and only managed to hurt her arm badly and make someone else do her job instead. What was worse, was that she didn’t even know the reason why she was carrying that axe, she didn’t know anything about weapons or fighting and Haskell was one of the greatest warriors of the village. Of course she felt extremely embarrassed when he asked her if she knew how to fight. Her instinct made her head lower down, she tried to avoid his gaze, but the man kept following her head’s movement with his own, only making it worse for the girl to hide her embarrassment. ‘There is no shame in that Visna.’ The sound of her name coming from him in that particular situation, made her shiver and her cheeks blush harder. ‘I don’t want you to be like me, or Freyja, or every shield maiden around here, I want you to be safe.’ He sounded sincere, and the fact he wasn’t trying to compare her to her sister added up a point to his score. Finally she was able to look at him back in the eyes. ‘So that wouldn’t happen again but better, so you know what to do in times of need.’ He continued and a smile followed those words. The girl tried to smile back at him, but only managed to look sorry for this whole situation she created.

Somehow the man managed to make her feel better once again when he said how women could be. It looked like he thought highly of women in general, so she couldn’t help but state the obvious, that she indeed was a woman too. ‘Yes you are.’ He replied, while flexing his arm to stroke his hand on his forehead. The girl couldn’t help but look at his muscles working under his shirt. ‘And I’m sure men will tremble under your qualities on being a woman.’ The man soon added. Visna shook her head to erase her inappropriate thoughts from her mind and looked at him, smiling sincerely. ‘So don’t take it as a weakness, that you are a woman.’ Her smile grew wider. ”Thank you, truly.” She simply told him, her voice tone sincere and firm. ”Also…” She started, looking at her hands on her lap for a moment. ”I’m sorry for this mess.” She pointed at her arm and then at the axe with a single movement of her hand and then looked back at him.

Passing out was not in the girl’s plans. She tried to do her best not to care about the pain, about her head spinning, about anything that could’ve make her feel dizzy or just bad, but eventually, the pain grew too strong too suddenly and she couldn’t hold back anymore. Once she returned to her senses, she tried to recall the last images she saw before passing out. His smile, his voice, his strong arms that immediately grabbed her, maybe she could’ve act a little earlier just to witness those same things but being fully conscious. The girl called his name since she couldn’t see nor hear him anywhere near and as she suspected, he came in from the outside. The man brought with him a cup of water, that handed to her while gently saying ’Welcome back.’ And then smiling at her. Visna followed his gaze to her bandage and realised he finished his work on her wound while she was unconscious. ”Thank you… Again. She said before taking a huge sip of water. ‘How do you feel?’ He then asked. The girl didn’t even have the time to ask herself that question, since so many thoughts flooded her mind right after she woke up. She tried to move a little, trying to feel her muscles and to see if her head was still spinning. ”I feel… Better, thank you.” She finally said, after being sure of her conditions. Her arm stung a little, but she assumed that was normal, after what happened.

Visna emptied the cup and carefully got up from his bed. ”I should… I should go now.” She realised how much of a burden she was becoming and that was the last thing she wanted to be for someone. ”I can’t thank you enough for what you did for me, Haskell.” She sincerely said, before smiling kindly at him. ”Hopefully, next time we see each other, I won’t be dying.” She then said with a laugh.

Only use your weapons. [Haskell] Empty

Haskell

She thanked him … more then once. For Haskell it didn’t present much, this was who he was. He always had his heart on the right place, something he learned from both his mother and his father, to be respectful, to help. Living under a rule like one that Halfdan had made it more obvious to do it, because he just didn’t. And if the earl wasn’t being concerned about the people living in his village then Haskell needed to be. He wanted the people to know he was there to help them, to bring their requests to the earl if needed. So helping Visna wasn’t only because he knew Freyja so well, it was because he cared, because he didn’t want her to bleed out on the sidewalks of this street. ‘Don’t mention it.’ He smiled, looking around to the mess. He often made a bigger mess of it, as he cleaned and cared for his own wounds. That there was blood on the floor from her didn’t matter to him, as long as she would live through the day. ‘I make a far bigger mess of things sometimes.’ He just winked, reassuring her this was all nothing to him. He was used to it.

She passed out on the moment he thought she would pull through. It didn’t took her long to find some strength back and to wake up, what was a good sign. He offered her the water and she took it with another push of her gratitude. He looked at her when she drank, measuring her pale face and the fact she said she felt better. He smiled while nodding, already knowing he would bring her home. He knew blood lose could hit you up out of nowhere. He rather didn’t want her to pass out in the middle of the street.

When she careful stood up from the bed and said she should go he walked over to the table, grabbing his own sword and the axe. ‘I’m gonna bring you home.’ He said while turning around to her, nodding to her arm. ‘You lost a lot of blood, you will feel weak for a couple hours or days. I rather don’t have you passing out on the streets.’ The last one rather a small joke to lift the spirits. He opened the door for her and chuckled when she said that their next meeting hopefully wouldn’t be one where she was in dying. ‘I hope that to, not that you were dying.’ He lifted the axe in his hand and looked at it. ‘If you need me for something, you know where to find me.’ He offered, nodding to the axe. He was a Radningar after all, if she wanted to learn he was there to teach her.

Why was this man helping her? Why was he wasting so much time over her? Was it because he knew her sister? It wasn’t like she ever met him before, so he couldn’t really know who she was. Was it because it was his job? That was more likely to be his reason. Either way, Visna knew she was extremely grateful to him. And sorry. ‘I make a far bigger mess of things sometimes.’ He didn’t lose the chance to reassure her, and actually made her a lot more comfortable with the whole situation and with him.

After waking up, she found herself in his bed and once again he was helping her, being far more kind than what he should’ve been towards a stranger. Visna really didn’t know how to repay him for his kindness and his thoughtfulness and she thought that the best way to start repaying him was by leaving his home so that he could’ve continued with his day without any more interferences. ‘I’m gonna bring you home.’ The man suddenly said. The brunette was ready to shake her head and refuse his help, but he kept talking. ‘You lost a lot of blood, you will feel weak for a couple hours or days.’ He was right, but she was sure she could’ve get home without any problem. ’I rather don’t have you passing out on the streets.’ Apparently his thoughts were a lot more different than Visna’s. The girl smiled and shook her head with her eyes closed.

Once she opened them again, she saw him already at the door, he was keeping it opened for her. The girl moved towards him, telling him that she hoped that their possible future encounter wasn’t going to be as bad as this one. He chuckled at her words and agreed with her. ‘If you need me for something, you know where to find me.’ The girl simply nodded at him and lowered her gaze for a brief moment. She knew she had found someone that was always going to help her in the future, but didn’t want him to be just that. ”Thank you Haskell.” It was true that the only thing she seemed to know was how to thank him, but she really meant it. She really was grateful to him for everything he’d done for her and for offering to help her again in the future, she needed him to know. With this thoughts in mind, she walked out of the house into the streets once again, confident and aware of the fact that she didn’t have to face the crowd alone, not this time.
