| It had only been about a week since Aleinn Andorsson had become her very first official apprentice, and Freyja thought things were going quite well. She’d seen him and his brother around occasionally, but hadn’t had any real reason to interact with either of them very often in the past. But things seemed to be working between them so far, so Freyja was optimistic that this would be good. He wasn’t overly chatty, he was polite, he appeared to be hardworking. These were all qualities she appreciated.
Honestly, Freyja was more worried about what sort of instructor she’d be than what sort of apprentice Aleinn would turn out to be. She’d never taught anyone how to build a ship before. Normally the people she worked with had at least some prior experience, and they were just there to do a specific job, not work side by side with her and build the whole thing. She’d recently started working on carving with Hakon, but again, he knew how to carve already. She was just giving him more opportunity to develop his skills, and a few helpful tips or tricks here and there.
She had a very particular way of going about things when she was building a ship but clearly she’d had a decent degree of success. Skagen was famous for the ships it produced, and Freyja was one of three shipbuilders that lived here. She just had to get used to vocalizing everything she was doing, as she did it, so Aleinn actually knew what the hell she was doing. It had been harder than she’d imagined at first, but she thought they were finding a pretty good rhythm.
“Aleinn?” she called, wandering over towards where she’d left the young man to ensure the planks of wood they needed to set were all the same size. “We can stop for lunch now.” Her eyes sought out Maurr, who she waved her basket at quickly before turning back towards her apprentice. She’d told the thrall he was welcome to share her lunch whenever he wanted to, though he’d insisted he couldn’t, and she’d meant it. He was probably getting annoyed with her by now, but she’d prefer him annoyed to starving.
“How are you feeling about this, so far?” she asked Aleinn, expecting an honest answer. She couldn’t help him through any difficulties he was experiencing if she didn’t know what he was having trouble with. Luckily, it was a nice day, and she took a seat on the stack of planks, closing her eyes as she tipped her face up towards the sun. Freyja loved being outdoors, and she loved working near the ocean. Hopefully Aleinn felt the same, because otherwise he’d chosen the wrong profession. |

| The sun was shining out, warming his head and shoulders, probably making his blond wavy hair blonder while he measured the planks that would eventually be a ship. This was vastly different from what he’d done previously when he was training with the other thegns. But he couldn’t honestly say that he missed it at all. His heart had never really been in it. The idea of possibly having to kill someone didn't sit particularly well with him. Also, he wasn’t adept at fighting as the others. He’d always looked up to his older brother, Henrik, who was a viking. He wanted to be just like his brother not really figuring in that they were two different people.
He was very thankful that Freyja had agreed to take him on as her apprentice. He intended to make sure that she didn’t regret it. He’d always heard he was a hard worker from other people in the village, but he had to be or he’d probably be starving after his father…..anyway he felt like he was picking things up fairly quickly. It was a lot of learn though. He appreciated how Frejya had explained everything she was doing. Some people might have found it annoying, but he didn’t. While he’d been around boats his whole life that didn’t mean he knew the first thing about building them.
His stomach let out a loud growl, but he chose to ignore it. He was busy concentrating on the measurements and getting them right. That was more important.
His ears perked up at the sound of his name. He looked up to see Frejya coming over to him. “What?”
He nodded in response to her telling him it was time for lunch while he put his things away and grabbed his own lunch before sitting down next to her.
“I think they’re going well.” He wasn’t sure if she expected him to elaborate more, but he was a short and to the point kind of person. It dawned on him that perhaps he should ask her how she felt things were going, but he imagined that if she was unhappy with him or his work she’d just say so. Freyja wasn’t one to just hide her feelings so he’d seen anyway.

| Sofie had spent all last night planing this all out. She would make her sister some lunch, and then taken it down to her at the docks. That way she could see who her new apprentice was. She had found out her sister had one, but had no idea who the person was. No one would give her a name from all her digging. People had just said that it was a boy, and the he was a little bit older then she was. Those weren’t useful things to tell her. Almost all the boys in the village were older than her. So she needed to go down there to find out who it was herself. Seeing as Freyja was not going to tell her on she own. Thad much was very clear to Sofie. She would make her regret not just telling her about it, and making her find out from someone else. She was her little sister for goodness sakes, she should be told these things. What was she worried about. That she would prank the person? Well she would, but sofie pranked everybody pretty much.
Sofie had gotten up early and done her normal routine to not draw attention to herself. She had trained, and then gone home to get ready. She put one of her nicest dresses on and then made Freyja a small lunch, that she put more effort into then she normally would. Well she had never made her sister lunch before, so she was already making a lot of effort. However if her sister tried to embarrass her or something she would be the one embarrassed when she saw that the food was well made and good. No pranks done to it at all. Sofie smiled at the idea of embarrassing Freyja already and she hadn’t even done it yet. She needed to not get to cocky, or it would end up biting her later she was sure. Once the lunch was done she put it into something nice to carry it in before heading down to the docks.
The walk had been short, but enough to get her excited to sneak up onto her sister and her new apprentice. She knew she looked good, she had spent the extra time to make sure she looked very good. Just in case the boy was cute. Silly thing to do maybe, but she wanted a man. That was something she was committed too at the moment. She wanted some love in her life at some point. She just wanted the person she picked to be a good person. Someone who would be faithful and not leave her high and dry when they were done with her and got what they wanted. That’ another reason she had been waiting to sleep with someone. She has had men who had wanted to sleep with her, but that wasn’t what she wanted. It never would be what she wanted.
When she saw her sister she smiled. This was it, she would find out who the apprentice was and Freyja would never see her coming. She would never know that she had been plotting this all day. As she got closer she saw another person with she sister. The boy, she knew who this boy was too. His name was Aleinn, and although she knew his name that was about all she knew about him. Sofie hadn’t spoken to him much, but he had certainly gotten good looking over the years. She hadn’t expected him, or to feel this weird suddenly. However she powered through and walked over. ”Hey Freyja, you forgot your lunch!” She said to her sister with a bright smile. “So I brought it to you!” She said next smiling even more before tuning toward Aleinn and smiling.
“Hi..w..what are you d..doing here?” She said to him. Her eyes widening as she realized she has stumbled upon her words. Her face went bright red and she tried to fix it “I mean.. h.how are you?” She said only stumbling a little bit that time. But still making her face even more red. Why was his happening? Sure she thought he was cute, and that his eyes are nice, and he had good hair, and that he was a lot of other things. But that shouldn’t make her all nervous like she was. Did that mean she likes him? This was not good. She had never really liked a boy before. Just liked looking at them. Turning away from him she looked at Freyja before shoving the lunch at her sister and taking a deep breath.“ here , the umm food.” She said awkwardly to her sister. In her embarrassment and didn’t even see that her sister already in fact had food out and in front of her already. Or it would just add onto it, which would make her face even more red. |

| The girl’s morning passed by with her trying to make a nice lunch for her sister Freyja. She prepared a light lunch, with different kind of fruits in a basket, few slices of bread and some fish, just as Freyja herself did when she brought her lunch at Kara’s shop. Visna’s main purpose was to get to know her sister’s new apprentice, but to return the favor was something she already planned to do anyways. So now she was killing two birds with one stone, since she planned to pay her sister a visit down at her work place.
Grabbing the basket she prepared, she headed out with a bright smile on her face. The walk from her house to the docks wasn’t really a short one, but she decided to walk pretty slowly and to just enjoy the day. She was in a good mood and she was planning to bring that good mood to her sister and her apprentice, so that once the lunch was over, they could go back to work with a light and happy mood.
Freyja’s work could be recognized from miles away. Visna saw few wooden beams and headed towards them knowing she was going to find her sister near those things. ”There she is.” The girl thought with a smile on her face. The more she got closer though, the more people she would start seeing around her sister. One was surely a boy, but the other one? Another girl? ”Hey Freyja, you forgot your lunch!” Visna heard Sofie’s voice and rolled her eyes. Of course she was going to have the same idea as her. The girl walked up to the little group of people anyways. Even if Sofie brought Freyja something to eat, that couldn’t keep her from joining them for lunch.
”It’s pretty crowded here.” She interrupted their talk in the exact moment when Sofie was shoving her homemade lunch at her face. ”I thought I would bring you lunch to return your favor, but I see you already had one.” Visna said calmly and politely, looking at Freyja’s hands and hoping Sofie would understand what the girl meant. Then she looked at the boy sitting right next to them and smiled at him. ”Oh, I thought my sister was alone." She lied shamelessly with a smile. ”Nice to meet you, my name is Visna, I’m one of Freyja’s sisters.” The brunette introduced herself. ”Is it okay if I join you?” She didn’t really wait for an answer and she sat next to Freyja. She picked a small piece of fruit from her basket and gave it a bite. ”Sofie, why are you standing? Come sit with us.” She said after swallowing the fruit and then ate another piece. Then she showed her basket to the three of them. ”If any of you is craving fish and bread or some fruit with honey, you are more than welcome." She offered her food mostly because she had prepared too much for just her to eat, since she was planning to share it with Freyja, but she was glad she wasn’t unprepared. |
